“GMA” Tops NBC’s “Today” by 887,000 Total Viewers and 33,000 Adults 25-54


“GMA” Grows by Double-Digits Year-to-Year in Demo and Total Viewers and Continues to Grow Season-to-Date



ABC News’ “Good Morning America” stood as the No. 1 morning program in Total Viewers (5.546 million) and Adults 25-54 (2.019 million) for the week of September 9, 2013, according to Nielsen Media Research.  During the week, “GMA” outdelivered NBC’s “Today” (4.659 million and 1.986 million, respectively) by +887,000 Total Viewers and by +33,000 Adults 25-54.  Further, “GMA” increased its advantage over the No. 2-ranked “Today Show” by double-digits in Total Viewers (+36%) compared to its year-ago margin (+652,000 on w/o 9/10/12).   Additionally, GoodMorningAmerica.com on Yahoo! reached 21 million users last month. It is the No. 1 morning news website and beats Today.com by millions of users each month


“GMA” has ranked No. 1 in Total Viewers in all 50 weeks of the season.  In fact, “GMA” has ranked No. 1 every week in Total Viewers for more than 1 year (the last 56 weeks – since w/o 8/13/12).  ”GMA’s” 56 consecutive weeks at the top stand as its longest stretch at No. 1 in more than 21 years – since before the 1991-92 season; Nielsen’s electronic database started in September 1991.


Season to date, “GMA” has turned in its most number of No. 1 finishes during a television season in both Total Viewers (50 of 50 weeks) and Adults 25-54 (42 of 50 weeks) in more than 21 years– since before the 1991-92 season.


On Monday (9/9/13), “GMA” scored its most-watched telecast and beat “Today” (5.787 million vs. 4.599 million) by its largest single-day Total Viewer advantage (+1.188 million) in more than 3 months – since 5/22/13.


“GMA” saw gains from the previous week (5.315 million and 1.978 million on w/o 9/2/13) in Total Viewers (+4%) and Adults 25-54 (+2%) to post its strongest numbers since May (w/o 5/20/13). 


“GMA” delivered across-the-board increases year to year: Total Viewers (+12%), Adults 25-54 (+10%) and Adults 18-49 (+3%) – 4.958 million, 1.831 million and 1.347 million, respectively, on w/o 9/10/12.  “GMA” has seen its overall audience grow from the same week last year in 49 of 50 weeks this season. 


Season to date, “GMA” is the No. 1 morning news program in Total Viewers and Adults 25-54. The ABC show is leading “Today” by its largest season margin in overall viewers (+679,000) in more than 21 years and in the adult news demo (+86,000) in 21 years – since before the 1991-92 season and the 1991-92 season, respectively; Nielsen’s electronic database started in September 1991.


Season to date, “GMA” is up in both Total Viewers (+9%) and Adults 25-54 (+4%) versus its year-ago averages, growing the most in the key adult news demo (NBC’s “Today” is down -10%/-16%, respectively; CBS’ “This Morning” is up +13%/+2%, respectively). “GMA” is seeing its largest overall season audience in more than 21 years and best Adult 25-54 performance in 5 years since before the 1991-92 season and 2007-08 seasons, respectively.


For the 2nd week in a row, “GMA” nearly doubled the performance of “CBS This Morning” in Total Viewers (+97%), while more than doubling in Adults 25-54 (+117%) and Adults 18-49 (+110%).
