"King & Maxwell" - Pilot - Sc. 43 Ted BerginÃ?s funeral# 1 Jon Tenney as Sean King # 2 Rebecca Romijn as Michelle Maxwell

Bad news often comes after hours on a Friday and so it was for TNT's King & Maxwell, which was cancelled after one season. The news is hardly surprising,  with episodes still left to air TNT stopped mentioning it in its ratings PR.

Its ratings weren't  great, but they weren't "look away" bad either. It premiered to 3.52 million viewers and a 0.6 adults 18-49 rating and closed its run on August 13 with a very similar 0.6 adults 18-49 rating and 3.50 million viewers.

Retentionistas can (and of course will) cry that the show lost a third of its Major Crimes lead-in! That's true and didn't help King & Maxwell's cause any. But it's worth noting that Perception has worse retention out of Rizzoli & Isles but has managed to hang around around (albeit with better ratings than King & Maxwell).

I suspect what probably sealed the show's fate is that the was produced by CBS Television Studios which doesn't have the reputation for wheeling, dealing and discounting just to keep stuff on the air.

Franklin & Bash is the only TNT show whose fate still hangs in the balance.

With so many new shows, it’s not surprising they axed it, think Franklin and Bash is next for the chop.

  • DonJ1973

No surprise here. Franklin and Bash is next, then TNT will green light a new drama for Wednesdays next summer.

  • DonJ1973

Shane Brennan isn’t crying. He still has NCIS and NCIS LA, but too bad his first non-NCIS venture was a bust.

Looks like special agent Fritz Howard will be returning soon to Major Crimes.

  • QW

My estimate is that Perception had 45 percent more 18-49 year old viewers than that of King & Maxwell.

@QW, it’s definitely possible you’re right. The point of that comparison was it seems unlikely retention killed King & Maxwell. I don’t have comprehensive averages handy and didn’t look at L7, so I just scanned the L+SD season premieres and finales for each. In the most recent data point for each, Perception definitely wasn’t much better. It had a 0.7 in its season finale (out of a 1.4 for Rizzoli & Isles) and King & Maxwell had a 0.6 (out of 0.9 for Major Crimes).

  • Pat

What killed King & Maxwell is that it only averaged a 0.49 in the 18-49 demo, which is pretty crummy. Franklin & Bash didn’t do a ton better, but averaged a 0.62.

Pretty good chance that one gets cut next, along with the unscripted The Hero and 72 Hours.

I obviously missed at least several 0.4’s! ;-) I’ve modified the text.

People have been calling Franklin & Bash dead since S1, so nobody should be very surprised if it ekes out a 4th season. Sony *is* known for wheeling and dealing.

  • Old Fart

TNT you suck that was good show. What not enough sex?

  • P3TE

    ermagerd that was a shocker….

  • DenverDean

@DonJ1973 TNT announced earlier this week that Jon Tenney was coming back to Major Crimes to direct an episode and the guest star in another. That seemed to seal K&M’s fate.

  • Dan

Franklin & Bash will be cancelled.

Any day now headline “Franklin & Bash canceled by TNT after three seasons” is coming soon, and I’m gonna be there when it does.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

hah, I definitely won’t be surprised if it is cancelled, just less shocked than some of you if it isn’t!

  • Jon

Sony would have to offer TNT a very good deal to renew Franklin and Bash. Didn’t Hawthorne get cancelled after three seasons and that was a Sony production.

  • Jon

Too bad. I enjoyed King & Maxwell while it lasted. It seems that the similar rated Franklin & Bash is next. F&B was one show that really made me laugh. I will miss it if it goes

  • Cyrax86

So is it the first Summer drama of TNT not to get a 2nd season since Heartland?

  • AppleStinx

Too many “Name1 & Name2″ shows. That’s why it failed.

  • AppleStinx

If they’re too lazy to think of a decent title, I’m too lazy to watch it. Another type of irritating title is one using a gerund: “Doing This/That/Somebody”.

  • Brock

What an uninspired title, no wonder it flopped.

  • John A

Never heard of it. I’m still bitter TNT cancelled Southland even though its ratings were bad.

  • cate

Not enough promotion? Sad. King and Maxwell ended on a cliffhanger. It would have been fun to see what happens next for the characters.
