At least Neighbors didn’t adjust down. I enjoy the show thoroughly and I can’t grasp why people don’t like it.

  • Oliver

    Great performance from 20/20.

  • rob60990

Knew Shark Tank would adjust up. At least it matched last year’s premiere. The Neighbors should be getting its undeserved full season order cut within a few weeks.

  • Jon23812

@JacobYates, the people who hate it have never seen the show. (I’m sure there are some people out there who HAVE seen it and do sincerely hate it, but most of the haters haven’t seen it)Before the show even premiered last year, people were talking about how bad it is, and that it would never get a full season renewal.

  • JR35

I tried watching The Neighbors when it premiered, and couldn’t get past the first five minutes. Maybe it got better thereafter, but I have no desire to watch it.

And yay for Shark Tank. :)

I’m glad to see other people on this site also have a love for The Neighbors. It is such a feel-good, quirky family comedy that is VERY underrated IMO. I really don’t get why so many people feel the need to bash it.

At least Last Man Standing/The Neighbors didn’t adjust down. I know these numbers are lukewarm (even for Fridays) but I’m hoping the Neighbors can remain steady in the coming weeks…I know it has a loyal albeit small fanbase.

I actually (foolishly) stuck with The Neighbors throughout the first season. I’m not watching this year. While it did get somewhat better after the pilot, it is still a pretty bad show that might have worked back in the 80s but now just feels dated. The actress who plays Jackie Joiner-Kersie is pretty funny though and I hope she gets a better project soon.

Anyway, a third season is not happening. Whether its order for the current season gets cut or not largely depends on whether ABC wants to stick with the Friday comedies for the whole season. If LMS got a 13-episode renewal and both shows tank by mid-October, TN will get its order cut and both shows will finish airing by January, then disappear forever.

Well, it was clear that the Neighbors knows that this is the last season.
They make a reference to their “Pity move to Fridays” during the episode. I really enjoy the Neighbors.

Malibu Country would have done no better. It got as low as a 1.1 last year out of a 1.4 Last Man Standing. It would have gotten the same relative numbers as the Neighbors.

  • Skylar James

@JR35: skip the pilot and watch the rest, its worth it

  • DM

I watched a few episodes of The Neighbors in season 1 and I watched the premier and every time I watch I think it’s really stupid. That said, I did not like Malibu Country either so I don’t know if it would have done any better.

  • AllOfHerTw!st

    Go LMS!

I hope H50 does well this Friday!

  • Bradley

The Neighbors also beat everything on cable for the night. Though the numbers are relatively low, I bet it continues to beat FOX and NBC when they premiere juniorchef and dateline.

I enjoy The Neighbors a lot! I have to admit I had my doubts about the show before it premiered thinking to myself what was ABC thinking when they created this show. But I always laugh out loud when I watch this show! I still cannot get over hearing the aliens use their sports star names! I am just happy the networks are putting new shows on Friday again. Maybe one day Saturday will have new shows again.

  • David

Is there any chance ABC would give Reba a call and get Malibu Country back on if Neighbors goes below 1.0 this coming friday?? I would really love to see MC back on!!!

  • Bradley

They’d just get a new sitcom. Although it was a great show, MC is dead to ABC.

  • charmedcraft

I’m also glad TN didn’t get adjusted down. I think people take it too seriously, it’s supposed to be fun. Come on, their aliens from outer space trying to blend in with humans. I also liked 3rd Rock From The Sun which is pretty much the same as TN.

    I don’t hate /The Neighbors/.
However I watched six episodes, that is, I gave it a chance and then five more because of how people were raving about it.

Different strokes. I’ve watched the whole run of every NBC sitcom of the past few years, the worst of which (1600 Penn and Whitney) I’d rank only slightly below the best that CBS produces (TBBT and HIMYM), and yet the unwatchable dreck (to my mind) that is most of CBS’s lineup (Mike and Molly, Two Broke Girls, 2.5 Men) gets better rating than any NBC sitcom. Hell, even CBS rejects beat any NBC sitcom not called “The Office”, and my fifth-favorite sitcom of the past decade (Go On) utterly bombed in the ratings. All the same, I don’t go around saying that I don’t understand why people don’t like Parks and Rec, Community, or Go On.

Personally, I don’t like /The Neighbors/ because I don’t find it funny. It doesn’t have a laugh track, which means that it’s not the torture that watching some of CBS’s stuff is, but even so, pretty much the only way I’d consider watching a seventh episode is if someone holds a gun to my head.

I think also part of the thing is that MC and HTLWYP fans are both kind of pissed. Speaking as one of the latter (I’ve never watched MC), I noticed a lot the excuses Neighbors fans made for their shows applied even more to HTLWYP:

    A. It got bad reention out of new Modern Family episodes, but when Neighbors premiered after MF it got even worse retention.
    B. It got only mediocre ratings out of Modern Family repeats, but its retention was considerably better, and those ratings were no worse than similar Neighbors ratings. C. Its writing started out uninspired, but got considerably better. The show was pleasant filler for the first five episodes, and I genuinely liked it by the sixth. I watched six episodes of the Neighbors and asked myself why I’d wasted twenth minutes every time.
    D. Some Neighbors fans even complained that one season wasn’t enough to build up an audience. Meanwhile, HTLWYP got a May premiere, no promotion, new episodes aired in the middle of repeats, and an announced cancellation. The ratings still remained comparable to the Neigbors’ later ratings until the summer burnoff was well underway.

In light of all this, the fact that the Neighbors looks like it might be on its way to HTLWYP summer burnoff ratings in the regular season gives me a feeling of Schaudenfreude, unjustifiably vindictive though it may be. I’m trying not to root for your show’s cancelation the way some of you did for mine, but the whining and justifying that Neighbors fans have been doing on here makes it really hard.

The Neighbors is a niche show that has no mass appeal and should never have been on network TV, same as too many of my favorite canceled shows. As one reviewer put it: “Third Rock from the Sun it ain’t.”

  • Robert Ford

I rate 3rd Rock as (fittingly) my 3rd favorite sitcom, after /Seinfeld/ and /30 Rock/.
Just because it has aliens doesn’t make it 3rd Rock from the Sun.

3rd Rock from the Sun used the aliens to explore the funny side of human culture.
The Neighbors didn’t even try to do this in the pilot the “jokes” as they were were about the aliens. In later episodes, they tried to do this occasionally, but were mostly the kind of joke a bad standup comedian would write (I remember one episode mocking how important the mall is in suburban culture), and they *still* had a lot of jokes about alien culture (the mall episode had one alien trying to pull a coup).

I remember the mall episode because it was the one that came closest to being funny, in that I could actually identify the “jokes” and think: “I see why this is supposed to be funny, it just isn’t.” Apart from throwing plates out the window (which also wasn’t funny, though I get why it was supposed to be), I can’t remember a single “joke” from any of the other episodes.

  • HV

    @Jacob Yates
I sat through the first 7 episodes of the show, and I only actually enjoyed one of those episodes.
Also, I hate The Neighbors because it killed HTLWYP, a HILARIOUS new comedy!
