The Show Premiered as TV’s Highest Rated New Drama in Nearly Four Years

On the heels of its debut as the season’s biggest new drama, ABC is set to rebroadcast the Pilot episode of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” on THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET). The show premiered as TV’s highest rated new drama in nearly four years. In addition, it received an unprecedented one million Facebook fans before its television debut, and those numbers are still climbing.

In the premiere episode, “Pilot,” it’s just after the battle of New York, and now that the existence of super heroes and aliens has become public knowledge, the world is trying to come to grips with this new reality. Agent Phil Coulson is back in action and has his eye on a mysterious group called The Rising Tide. In order to track this unseen, unknown enemy, he has assembled a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division). The group’s first assignment together as a team finds them trying to track down an ordinary man who has gained extraordinary powers, powers that could have devastating consequences.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Brett Dalton as Agent Grant Ward, Chloe Bennet as Skye, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz and Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” Marvel’s first television series, was co-created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen (“Dollhouse,” “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”), who also serve as executive producers along with Jeph Loeb (“Smallville,” “Lost,” “Heroes”) and Jeffrey Bell (“Angel,” “Alias”). “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”  is broadcast in 720 Progressive (720P), ABC’s selected HDTV format with a 5.1 channel surround sound. This program carries a TV-PG,V parental guideline.

Throwing in the towel vs. the TBBT premiere, are we?

  • Matthew

So I guess greys is from 9-11?

  • Jeff R.

The rest of the night is an extremely aggressive attack on Elementary over two weeks (assuming both Grey’s and Scandal have cliffhangers in the middle of their two-hour season openers.)

What was originally scheduled before this? Presumably not Wonderland; was it Greys 8-10 followed by Scandal, or something else?

  • AllOfHerTw!st

What was the original ABC schedule for Thurs night?

  • Geraint

They already planned to re-air Shield on Thursday at 8 before last nights premier, I was checking ABC’s schedule yesterday morning and noticed it. Sneaky ABC trying to make out that it was because of last night great ratings.

  • Tony JJ

Very smart by ABC this should’ve been the plan.

    and it was originally:

    Shark Tank (repeat)
Grey’s Anatomy (2 hour season premiere)

    Next Thursday:
Scandal: The Secret Is Out (recap special)
    Grey’s Anatomy (new episode)
    Scandal (season premiere)

and then the following week is Wonderland premiere.

  • Tony JJ

They must have changed it yesterday, my cable guide has shown Shark Tank (Season 5, Episode 1) repeat scheduled for tomorrow at 8. Or it was their plan all along to re-air Shield, but they wanted to make a big deal out of after it premiered and didn’t want people thinking they could skip the premiere tuesday and watch it on thursday.

    @Tony JJ
Very smart by ABC this should’ve been the plan.

I always figured it was. They had nothing scheduled for a while, then put a Shark Tank repeat there when they hit the two weeks to go mark, then scheduled the Agents of SHIELD repeat earlier this week, but waiting until today to actually say anything about it.

  • Geraint

I checked on the TV Guide on the top right of the page, I live in the UK so don’t have a cable guide to go by. It airs on Friday in the UK looking forward to watching it, the promos look good.

    @Tony JJ
They must have changed it yesterday

Futon Critic had the change listed on Monday (they don’t update over the weekend).

  • Tommy M.

Smart move not announcing the repeat until today. They probably didn’t want people to not watch the premiere and just plan to catch the repeat.

  • Tony JJ

@Tommy M. my thought too, especially against big shows like NCIS and The Voice, people could have easily chosen either of those and watched the repeat on Thursday. Smart ABC!

  • CrimTV

First smart move ABC has made in years!

  • Igwell

The rest of the night is an extremely aggressive attack on Elementary over two weeks…

It’s incidental. I really don’t think ABC considers Elementary a threat.

  • Joe

Why? It did just fine in its time slot.

REPEAT “LUCKY 7″ if you have an open slot, ABC!!! Goldbergs and Trophy Wife are TERRIBLE leads for that show. GIVE IT A CHANCE TO SUCCEED, MORONS!!!

  • Joe

Repeat LUCKY 7! It’s the NEXT BREAKING BAD!!!

  • Jeff R.

@Igwell: well, it’s the competition. And at the time I thought the 8:00 Scandal was a new episode rather than a recap. Still, putting the openers of Elementary (and, I guess, Parenthood) against non-standard but strong competition is going to get more of the overlap audiences with Scandal habituated to watching the other shows delayed rather than live.

    Jeff R.

I wonder just how many viewers watch both Scandal and Elementary. By the end of the season, Scandal was hitting the 3’s, and Elementary’s ratings were hitting 2.0, but Elementary’s DVR numbers just kept going up. It actually surpassed Person of Interest in Live+7, so I bet quite a few people normally watch Scandal live and DVR Elementary. This might help the season premiere of Elementary at least.

  • AllOfHerTw!st

Lucky 7 will be lucky to make it to 7 episodes!

  • Michael1

This episode has already been made available “On Demand”. It will be interesting to see how it does. Of course, after the 1.8 that “Iron Man 2″ got last week, I didn’t think the pilot would do well either.
