HBO RENEWS EMMY®-WINNING DRAMA SERIES
Boardwalk Empire FOR FIFTH SEASON

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 26, 2013 – Following the hit series’ fourth-season debut on Sept. 8, HBO has renewed Boardwalk Empire for a fifth season, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming.
“Thanks to Terry Winter, Martin Scorsese, Tim Van Patten, Howard Korder and their stellar team, Boardwalk Empire remains in a class by itself,” said Lombardo.  “I look forward to another electrifying season of this impeccably crafted series.”
From Terence Winter, Emmy®-winning writer of “The Sopranos” and Academy Award®-winning director Martin Scorsese, Boardwalk Empire is set in the 1920s during Prohibition, and chronicles the life and times of Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, the undisputed leader of Atlantic City.
Among the early critical raves for the new season of Boardwalk Empire, New York’s Daily News declared that the series “remains must-see television drama,” while People called it “terrific” and a “gripping spectacle.” The Chicago Tribune hailed the show’s “achingly good performances,” and Variety termed it “one of TV’s most compelling dramas.”
BOARDWALK EMPIRE continues to be one of HBO’s most-watched original programs, with an average gross audience of 7.5 million viewers this season.
The series recently received five Emmy® Awards, the most of any series in the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy® Awards competition, including Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (Bobby Cannavale); Outstanding Art Direction for a Single-Camera Series; Outstanding Hairstyling for a Single-Camera Series; Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour); and Outstanding Sound Editing for a Series.
In 2012, the show received four Emmy® Awards, including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (Tim Van Patten). In 2011, the series led all programming with eight Emmy® Awards, including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (Martin Scorsese). In Jan. 2011, BOARDWALK EMPIRE received two Golden Globe Awards, for Best Television Series – Drama and Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama (Steve Buscemi).

so this gets a quick renewal and there’s still no news about The Newsroom? Even After Jeff Daniels emmy win? I love this show, but I’m getting tired of waiting for confirmation on TN.

  • Seth

I expect 6 seasons for this show.

  • DSC

will this still be 12 shows? HBO has been reducing orders down to 10 for their veteran and new dramas

  • Matthew

DSC, I doubt it. The show has been doing extremely well. True blood got cut because of the budget. The show will still have 12 episodes. I am hoping for 2 more seasons.

Excellent news! Boardwalk Empire is great this year.

7.5 million across platforms is only down 100,000 from last years average. Breaking Bad and Dexter have been killing the initial airings though.

Okay numbers, but probably a better reason for renewal is Emmys – it won 5 this year including a major one (Sup Actor).

I bet there are some contract negotiations going on or something that is delaying The Newsroom renewal announcement.

More happy for renewed! For Seth:production say the series ending or with Great Depression or Prohibition ending, but in every case, the last year of the series is 1929!And produce 6 seasons!Let’s see more and more!Viva Nucky Thompson!Ciao!

Just FYI: The newsroom was renewed by HBO for season 3 over three weeks ago.

  • João Paulo

    Yeeeeeeeeeesss!

  • UKTVFan

durary, you are incorrect. Three weeks ago, Jeff Daniels tweeted about The Newsroom returning for a third season. HBO quickly released a statement saying that they were still in discussions with Aaron Sorkin for S3.

Newsroom’s renewal is pretty much a given. Thomas Sadoski and Daniels have already stated as much. I’d say it’s more a question of when than if.

After his Emmy win, Daniels said the reason why he first tweeted out news of the renewal was because he asked HBO what he should say on the future of the show in case someone asked and they told him to say it would be coming back. There are still scheduling issues to work out, but that’s related to Sorkin, since he writes practically every episode and has a ton on his plate ATM.

Boardwalk Empire was a “empire” for HBO.

  • FowlScat

Bringing up The Newsroom in the same discussion as Boardwalk is blasphemous. The third rate hysterics masquerading as a real news network is a joke.

  • Flu shoot

Boardwalk Empire has great pacing and makes you think. In addition, does not jam liberal views down your throat!!
