TV Ratings Friday: 'Hawaii Five-0' Premiere Down, 'Shark Tank' Rises + 'MasterChef Junior' has Solid Friday Start

CBS was number one in adults 18-49, and with total viewers.

On CBS, the season premiere of Undercover Boss matched last season's 1.5 adults 18-49 premiere rating. The season (and time period) premiere of Hawaii Five-0 earned a 1.5, down three tenths from last year's  1.8 premiere adults 18-49 rating. Your predictions were too optimistic. The season premiere of Blue Bloods earned a 1.7, up from last year's 1.5 premiere rating among adults 18-49.

On ABC, Last Man Standing scored a 1.2, down three tenths from last week's 1.5 adults 18-49 rating.  The Neighbors notched a 1.0, down two tenths from last week's 1.2 adults 18-49 rating Shark Tank garnered a 1.9, up a tenth from last week's 1.8 adults 18-49 rating   20/20 matched last week's  1.3 adults 18-49 rating.

On NBC, Dateline earned a 1.3, up two tenths from last week's 1.1  adults 18-49 rating.

On FOX, the series premiere of MasterChef Junior earned a 1.6 adults 18-49 rating, up from last fall's premiere of Kitchen Nightmares in the time period (which earned a 0.9 adults 18-49 rating on October 26)

On The CW, Perfect Score matched last week's 0.2 adults 18-49 rating.   America's Next Top Model was also even with last week's 0.4 18-49 rating.

In Late-Night Metered Markets Friday night:

 
  • In Nielsen's 56 metered markets, household results were: "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," 2.8/7; CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman," 2.4/6; and ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 1.8/5 with an encore.
 
  • In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, adult 18-49 results were: “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” 0.9/4; "Late Show," 0.4/2; and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 0.5/3 with an encore.
 
  • From 12:35-1:05 a.m. ET, ABC's "Nightline" averaged a 1.2/4 in metered-market households and a 0.3/2 in 18-49 in the Local People Meters.
 
  • From 12:35-1:35 a.m. ET, "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" (1.5/5 in metered-market households) beat CBS's "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" (1.2/4).  In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, "Late Night" (0.6/4 in 18-49) topped "Late Late Show" (0.3/2).
 
  • At 1:35 a.m., "Last Call with Carson Daly" averaged a 0.9/3 in metered-market households with an encore and a 0.4/3 in adults 18-49 in the 25 markets with local people meters.

Definitions:

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.  More information on ratings is available here.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

    I knew BB was going to do better than H50. Even if it is a 10 pm show, it gained after H50.

    Both The Neighbors and LMS doing badly. Shark Tank repeats could do better at 8pm. Good night for CBS. And great for Blue Bloods. Didnt the season finale get a 1.1? Way up from that. Good start for Masterchef Jr.

    blue bloods grew year over year with the second highest rating of the night at 10PM and already we have someone in the comments talking about how CBS should cancel it.

    I think HF0 did just fine along with the rest of CBS’s lineup. It had a 100% retention from UB and BB built for Five-0’s leadin. It also looks like HF0 notched a couple extra viewers compared to last seasons opener. Solid for CBS IMO.

    I usually don’t agree with rob but he’s right, The Neoghbors needs to go!

    Nice for BB growing its audience out of H50. I think BB has a couple more seasons under its belt. It’ll be interesting though if Dracula will take a bite out of it. I couldn’t resist saying that.

    Ouch. Second week in and that has to be a series low for Last Man Standing. Neighbors already below anything MC ever got. A 1.0 with 4 million viewers? Brutal. Shark Tank has been close to the same as last year, so it looks like Neighbors is the culprit here, dragging down the overall viewers by several million and the demo.

    Never could figure out ABCs reasoning for putting Neighbors in place of Malibu. Success on Friday night is dependent on having a large-ish overall audience, with hopes of getting just a good enough demo out of that decent viewership. Neighbors was never going to bring in 6-7 million viewers.

    Mixing a multi-cam with a single-cam was never going to work for either show. The two do not go together the way last years Friday line-up did. You had people who watched LMS who would stay tuned in for MC, and people who wanted to watch MC but started with LMS because the shows were similar in content. Now you are trying to attract one audience interest in LMS and a totally different audience at 8:30. You’d think the Happy Endings Friday run would have given them a hint of what to expect.

    The Neighbors retention has been 80% and this week 83%
    Even though I like the show, ratings wise it shouldn’t be renewed
    But Malibu Country had about the same retention and cost more to make.
    Smart decision on ABC

    Shark tank should start off at 8:00 THEN lead into LMS. ABC Should’ve kept Malibu countr. MC consistently stayed around the 1.2-1.5 area and stayed above 6 million most of the time. ABC needs to cancel TN quickly. Don’t really see them canceling LMS, cause it’s a Friday and if it had a better companion it would be doing much better. Replace The Neighbors!!

    MasterChef jr did well for fox. That’s a good rating for Hawaii 50 I mean it did as well as CSI NY in the slot and is a great fun night Friday show. Damn shark tank is abcs everything and excellent rise. Abc should put something else good there before. Last man standing is crashing. Honestly abc should move last man back to Tuesday’s after the goldbergs and trophy wife move after modern family. Blue bloods is always solid.

    Not that I’ll be sad to see it go, but I’m actually surprised that the Neighbors has started its decline already. Not that I’ll be sad to see it go, but I’d expected that there were enough people who didn’t know it premiered that it would get within +/- .1 of last week’s rating.

    It seems that when ABC shows decline, they go into a death spiral (Apt 23, Happy Endings, the summer episodes of HTLWYP, now the Neighbors), when NBC shows decline they go for season after season of almost-cancellation (30 Rock, Parks and Rec, Community), and CBS shows never get a chance to fall to numbers that the first two would kill for.

    I’ve said for a few years now that NCIS: LA would probably do well on Fridays or Sundays. I could see them putting that there and giving the proposed spin off, assuming they go with it, the spot behind the original.

    Yes, it has nothing to do with the fact that LMS is doing poorly enough that ABC can’t win Fridays. It’s all the Neighbors fault. Have you even watched the show since the pilot episode? If you haven’t, then I urge you to give it another try this season.

    I’ve been hearing you all clamoring for ABC to uncancel Malibu Country. In case you haven’t noticed, the numbers for the Neighbors are pretty much the same numbers MC was pulling last season.
