Even though it's a "limited series", Hostages would be renewed (just like that other limited series Under The Dome) were its ratings good enough. They aren't. It's likely to be canceled. For you comment thread lawyers, that means "It will not be renewed".

Mom premiered as CBS's lowest rated sitcom, and they always cancel their lowest rated sitcom (and they will, even with HIMYM ending), so for at least this week (until others go lower) it is likely to be canceled.

Unlike the Bubble Watch, the bear's not nearly ready to tap Hawaii Five-0 as likely to be canceled. This could be Hawaii Five-0's final season, but it started better than The Good Wife and even with The Mentalist, and it airs on Friday, which carries a certain ratings forgiveness. The bear wouldn't be surprised if it get lumped together in a group with The Mentalist and The Good Wife where one or two will be canceled, but the bear will puzzle over which, but let's wait and see.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I watched Mom for the last 2 weeks, and I think I have had enough. I can’t laugh at the protagonist, and I can’t laugh with her. I end up just feeling sorry for her. The show is a real downer.

The only funny character on the show is one French Stewart is playing. Maybe CBS should retain him and create a new sitcom that sends up Gordon Ramsay.

H50 is owned by cbs,it has the biggest syndication deal ever, it s sold in many countries around the world! It s a keeper!

It’s sad how people still think Under the Dome was a limited series. Except for a short promo with the word “the summer’s mini-series event”, which was probably a bad promo on their part among their other numerous correctly advertised promos, it was never meant as a non-renewable series. It’s driving me crazy how people are still not learning that.

  • Tommy M.

@ Christian, CBS did originally plan Under the Dome as a limited series. They changed course on that when it premiered so well.

  • Andy

The Good Wife will stay. It is still doing well considering the stupid comments about it. One of the best shows on TV. Oh and BTW I am 57 years old

HOSTAGES may well be a goner, but as of last night MOM is NOT the lowest rated comedy on CBS. WE ARE MEN now has that distinction. And the whole CBS line up was down between 14-17 percent last night but MOM was only down 12%. So there are reasons for hope. My guess is that CBS will cancel WAM and put MIKE & MOLLY in its place and that will perk up the night a bit. Won’t fix everything. But it may stop the bleeding.

“HOSTAGES may well be a goner, but as of last night MOM is NOT the lowest rated comedy on CBS. WE ARE MEN now has that distinction.”

    Correct you are!

We can write the CBS headline right now.

‘We Are Men’ Is Certain To Be Canceled

    @Andy
I love the Good Wife but 1)this needs to be it’s last season because that little bit of magic is gone and 2) Not hardly will say it’s one of the best shows on tv !! I’ll consider calling it DVR worthy

  • Paul

    @DocBlaq

The Good Wife magic gone? This past Sunday’s episode was AMAZING.

  • Dude

    Sad. I like Mom.

    My CBS predictions:
Notes: I only move shows to very likely renewed/canceled after airing at least TWO episodes this season. If a show is announced as renewed, canceled, or final season before the season begins, it will show up as being in the middle for the whole season.

    VERY LIKELY CANCELATION

Don’t want to see HFO gone – like that one! It was on the cancel list now bubble so hope it makes it
    – The Mentalist – final season? It says RedJohn Final Chapter? –
and isn’t Hostages a 15 show series only – thought I heard that – would they cancel before the end? It was better than I expected. Not so impressed with new shows so far – Like SHIELD so far the best. Don’t like the move for POI.

  • reo

ugh, the rating system is beyond flawed.
no less, i’m rooting for Mom to stick around. the cast has a strong dynamic, and its motifs seem durable.

  • BT

The Good Wife just got a syndication deal and still gets some Emmys so I vote one more season. The Mentalist’s subtitle this season is ‘Red John: The Final Chapter’ so I say this is TM’s last season. H50 will move back to Mondays I assume. After TM is gone, Criminal Minds or H50 on Sunday?

  • Casey

I understand the Bear’s placement of Mom in the index given that We are Men hadn’t even aired yet to be factored n for this week.

I’m still not ready to call this particular race though because I want a couple weeks worth of data on the Millers. I want to see how it does this week and I also want to see what kind of drop it has next week. Ordinarily I’d make a call based off of how it does this week but with that powerhouse of a lead-in it has, I want to try and gage how much the show benefits from being right behind Big Bang. It wouldn’t surprise me though if Mom goes from lowest rated to third lowest rated just like that.

I said this last season and I still feel the same way. I can’t see CBS letting Two & a Half Men go the same year they let How I Met Your Mother go. I really can’t see them letting it go if they end up having to cancel 3/4 of the new comedies they premiered this year and if The Crazy Ones declines drastically that becomes even less likely. There’s no way in hell they cancel Two and a Half Men if they have to cancel a ton of these sitcoms and still decide they want 2 blocks of 2 hours for sitcoms next year.

I totally understand though, especially knowing what We are Men did in the ratings why they ordered 22 episodes of Mike and Molly for this year.

  • Jlopie1

There’s no way H50 will move back to Mondays, although apparently it wasn’t so bad off in that 10pm slot after all! I like it on Fridays, and it did it’s job last week. It held it’s own, and boosted Blue Bloods 18-49 demo rating. I see these two shows hanging out together for a few more seasons., especially since TM and TGW ratings were so lackluster. The S1 vibe is back for H50 – I’m glad to see it off the likely to be cancelled list from last week!

  • Jason

Why would they cancel Hostages? It’s only 15 episodes. There’s no way it’d be back for a 2nd season.

  • Ryan

I think we’re jumping the gun on Mom. We Are Men already is doing worse and I suspect the Millers will do worse by its second week, even with TBBT as a lead-in. Mike & Molly will replace We Are Men in a couple of week, and the Millers will be replaced midseason. Mom will get a full season order.

One or both of The Good Wife and The Mentalist will be cancelled, unless Hawaii Five-0 really crashes and burns on Friday. Elementary is safe, and by extension, safe for a season 4 renewal as well. Not sure if CBS will ship Elementary off to Sunday/Friday for Season 3, they might keep it on Thursday for one more season before doing so for Season 4.

  • One

All the new CBS shows deserve cancellation – even the one w/ a healthy lead on the bear.

  • THE OLD MAN

    Agree with post as is

Would definitely add We Are Men to Certain Cancelation next week

THE GOOD WIFE IS AS GOOD AS EVER!
