Even though it's a "limited series", Hostages would be renewed (just like that other limited series Under The Dome) were its ratings good enough. They aren't. It's likely to be canceled. For you comment thread lawyers, that means "It will not be renewed".

Mom premiered as CBS's lowest rated sitcom, and they always cancel their lowest rated sitcom (and they will, even with HIMYM ending), so for at least this week (until others go lower) it is likely to be canceled.

Unlike the Bubble Watch, the bear's not nearly ready to tap Hawaii Five-0 as likely to be canceled. This could be Hawaii Five-0's final season, but it started better than The Good Wife and even with The Mentalist, and it airs on Friday, which carries a certain ratings forgiveness. The bear wouldn't be surprised if it get lumped together in a group with The Mentalist and The Good Wife where one or two will be canceled, but the bear will puzzle over which, but let's wait and see.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    I hate to keep hitting on 2BG but I’m so bummed that a show that started with so much promise is figuratively as well as literally going into the toilet. While it may get the 4th season order, I’m sure it will be a a steep discount and CBS will not be using it as an anchor anywhere.

    There is still time to adjust course before hitting that ratings iceberg but I think it will require wholesale changes behind the camera starting with the producer(s) and flowing down from there.

    How can you try to predict on “The Millers”??? it looks hysterical and the cast is amazing!…Mom is very funny as well. Dads is horrible, We are Men was horrible and still trying to figure out if The Crazy Ones and Michael J Fox show are worth sticking around on my DVR. The Big Bang, Neighbors, and Anger Management are the best sitcoms on tv right now…

  • Joseph

    There are reports out of Hollywood that employees at Television City have gone through Cancellation Bear drills in a futile attempt to ward off an attack and prevent “Mom” from being whacked.

    But “Mom” may be the first cancellation of the season on any broadcast network.

  • TV God

    I am a sucker for multi-cam sitcoms. The only ones I don’t watch are 2.5 Men, and Anger Management. I literally watch every multi-cam sitcom. Sean Saves The World will be AMAZING, and The Millers looks like a funny show too. I absolutely love multi-camera sitcoms.

  • HV

    @Joseph
    What are you on? In no universe will Mom be the first cancelation of the season. For one, We Are Men premiered much lower and is also a comedy on the same network on the same day of the week. Also, are you forgetting how bad of ratings some shows on other networks such as Lucky 7 and Betrayal premiered to? Also, many networks have saved some of their new shows for this week to premiere, such as The Millers, Ironside, Sean Saves the World, etc. Mom will not be the first cancelation of the season. I expect that next week Bill will have moved it to likely renewal.

  • DanOregon

    Actually thought Hostages was a miniseries – the idea of a second season makes me less likely to watch it. Hope they tie it off.

  • Ultima

    @Jason
    Why would they cancel Hostages? It’s only 15 episodes.

    If the ratings keep falling, CBS will probably want to replace it with something with higher (or at least more stable) ratings for November sweeps. Also, pulling the show will potentially allow them to move the Intelligence premiere up to early January.

  • Ultima

    @Joseph
    But “Mom” may be the first cancellation of the season on any broadcast network.

    I would suggest that you supply the logical reasoning behind your prediction, but as per usual, you have probably skipped that step and are just randomly guessing.

    :roll:

    what time of year do the networks look at their pilots and will they have any

  • alffan

    I thought the pilot to Mom was disappointing but episode 2 was SO much better. I hope people give it another chance. CBS might want to give it a one episode try out behind BBT or HIMYM to see.

    I thought the Crazy Ones was 10 times better than Michael J. Fox who seemed like 30 Rock with all the NBC references. Honestly, The Crazy Ones (with Robin Williams fast talking) would be a good show behind BBT.

    They might want to cut that hour back on Thursday and beef up Monday. CBS has the potential to have lots of holes for 2014-2015 which is why Two and a Half Men will need to come back.

  • HV

    @Ultima
    Oh how I’ve missed your sarcasm. :P :D

  • Carmen

    I think Mom has some real potential. I wasn’t watching it the first 2 weeks it was on, in favor of Sleepy Hollow.

    I think it will improve its ratings in the coming weeks. For the moment, though, it has a problem with being the 1/2 hour show following a (quickly slipping) 2 Broke Girls.

    While on he subject of 2 Broke Girls, I’m not surprised that its going down.
    I’m only surprised that it took as long as it did (3 seasons?). It’s basic premise of – “Downfallen Rich girl talks dirty” has gotten old.

    It had actually gotten old after the first season, but the show always had could positioning on the most viewed network.

  • Mike

    I just hope if the mentalist is indeed getting canceled I hoe they announce it by December so that the writers can write a proper finale.,, and I know that red john will be caught before the end of the season but I still would like a more proper finale instead of ending on some. Sort of cliffhanger.

    I also hope Hawaii five o is renewed for at least 4 more seasons

  • Greg

    If any veteran show is in danger, to me it’s The Mentalist. The Good Wife will probably live another day due to how poorly CBS new shows have been doing and H50 is doing solidly on Fridays.

  • Michael1

    Just so we’re clear, the argument for giving only 2 frowny-faces to “Mom” was that it had the lowest demo rating of any CBS sitcom which had aired during the 2013-14 season, and that CBS needs to free up space at the end of the season in order to air something new next season. Now that “We Are Men” has usurped it, with “The Millers” yet to air, does the 0.88 relative rating on firmer ground? Especially since the finale of “How I Met Your Mother” will open up another comedy time slot.

  • shogun

    So Bill, how much credit do you think shows airing on Friday deserve over ordinary shows. I’m trying to decide if Blue Bloods is likely to be renewed over Elementary and CSI.

  • Ultima

    @jupiter
    what time of year do the networks look at their pilots

    Networks typically start ordering pilots in January and production is done during March/April.

    As always, there are exceptions for off-cycle and backdoor pilots (e.g. CBS has already ordered another NCIS backdoor pilot for this season).

  • Ultima

    @Michael1
    does the 0.88 relative rating on firmer ground?

    It’s probably now on the top edge of the bubble, so yes.

    Especially since the finale of “How I Met Your Mother” will open up another comedy time slot.

    Not necessarily. It’s entirely possible that both HIMYM and 2.5 Men end and CBS simply drops back down to three hours of sitcoms.

    “So Bill, how much credit do you think shows airing on Friday deserve over ordinary shows. I’m trying to decide if Blue Bloods is likely to be renewed over Elementary and CSI.”

    Wild guess, 30%.

    On CBS, both the Friday and Sunday drama futures are so tied to their syndication economics, which are hidden to us, that ratings comparisons get tricky.

    It would take a catastrophe for Elementary to be canceled. CBS hasn’t canceled a 2nd season drama in 6 years.

    Unless Mondays Intelligence is a keeper, I think we’re probably looking at 1-2 drama cancellations outside of Monday 10pm.

    Thanks, Bill!
