Even though it's a "limited series", Hostages would be renewed (just like that other limited series Under The Dome) were its ratings good enough. They aren't. It's likely to be canceled. For you comment thread lawyers, that means "It will not be renewed".

Mom premiered as CBS's lowest rated sitcom, and they always cancel their lowest rated sitcom (and they will, even with HIMYM ending), so for at least this week (until others go lower) it is likely to be canceled.

Unlike the Bubble Watch, the bear's not nearly ready to tap Hawaii Five-0 as likely to be canceled. This could be Hawaii Five-0's final season, but it started better than The Good Wife and even with The Mentalist, and it airs on Friday, which carries a certain ratings forgiveness. The bear wouldn't be surprised if it get lumped together in a group with The Mentalist and The Good Wife where one or two will be canceled, but the bear will puzzle over which, but let's wait and see.

The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Just when I decide to give network tv another shot, the two shows I decide to watch are likely to be cancelled! Ugh

  • Nick

I hope by some God’s grace, Mom doesn’t get cancelled. It’s a really funny show, unfortunately, that didn’t come across in the advertising. The only reason I tuned in was for Anna Faris, despite the fact that previews weren’t that funny, and it turned out to be a really good show.

  • Elijah

    I <3 Elementary
Bill, do you think it could have a syndication deal by theend of tehe season?

  • K

I really do not understand how people can watch The Big Bang Theory and actually enjoy it. Such a horrible show.

  • Tomcatt630

“Good Wife” should just get a proper finale, give them time to move on.

Next CBS will develop a new dramedy show “NCIS: Pasadena Big Bang” starring the BBT Comic Book Store owner. Joins the FBI, to fulfill a lifetime dream of solving crimes. Have Linda Hunt, ‘Hettie’ on NCIS:LA , for guest shots.

  • KJ Styles

We Are Men is dead. It will be replaced by Mike & Molly within a month. They’ll probably run Big Bang Theory reruns there before premiering M&M.

Mom is on the bubble IMO. If 2 Broke Girls ratings go up, then Mom’s probably will too. I wouldn’t doubt Mom’s cancellation, but I also wouldn’t doubt it’s renewal either.

I’m hoping the Millers does poorly so that Will Arnett can go back to doing Arrested Development. Millers being a hit would hinder those chances. Jason Bateman may be the biggest star on AD, but Arnett is easily the most entertaining character on the show. Gob is the man!!

At least two of the following shows will be cancelled- Hostages, The Good Wife, The Mentalist, Blue Bloods, and Hawaii 5-0. Three of them if Intelligence is renewed.

Hostages is obviously dead. The Mentalist seems to be writing as if this season is it’s last so I can see it ending too. The Good Wife seriously needs to go. It’s the lowest rated show on CBS and it was only renewed in the past because of it’s Emmy nominations, it got none this year so that coupled with it’s awful ratings should get it the axe. I’m hoping that the Friday curve keeps H50 around. However, it probably would die the following season if it’s moved to Sundays.

The Crazy Ones is the only new CBS I’m impressed with thus far. Mom wasn’t as bad as a lot of people say it is, but it’s not great either. I could take or leave it. The rest suck. I’m looking forward to Intelligence. That vs Blacklist will be a good feud for Mondays.

Here prediction for CBS fall 2014:

    SUNDAY
    7:00 60 Minutes
    8:00 The Amazing Race
    9:00 Elementary
    10:00 Person of Interest

    MONDAY
    8:00 Mom
    8:30 NEW-Middlescence
    9:00 2 Broke Girls
    9:30 NEW-The McCarthys
    10:00 NEW-Battle Creek

    TUESDAY
    8:00 NCIS
    9:00 NEW-NCIS: New Orleans
    10:00 NCIS: Los Angeles

    WEDNESDAY
    8:00 Survivor
    9:00 Criminal Minds
    10:00 CSI: Crime Scene Investigation

    8:30 NEW-Gorgeous Morons

    9:00 Hawaii Five-0
    10:00 Blue Bloods

    Midseason:
Two and a Half Men (if current season is not final season)
1 or 2 new comedies: The 40s, (Good Session)
    4 new dramas

  • CBSviewer

CBS really needs to fix their Monday night especially since HIMYM is ending in May. This is what I think CBS could do next season:

    MONDAY
8:00 – The Millers (I hope really hope it will be a hit)
    8:30 – Mike & Molly
    9:00 – 2 Broke Girls
    9:30 – NEW COMEDY
    10:00 – NCIS: Los Angeles

CBS needs to fix Monday nights. Premiere only one Comedy at 9:30 (8:30 is not a good slot) because 2 Broke Girls is not as strong as it was. The 10PM slot is really hard they should move a veteran there.

    TUESDAY
    8:00 – NCIS
    9:00 – NCIS: New Orleans
    10:00 – NEW DRAMA

Use NCIS (TV’s #1 Show) to Premiere its new Spin-off and another Drama at 10 (like they did in 2009)

    WEDNESDAY
    8:00 – Survivor
    9:00 – Criminal Minds
    10:00 – CSI

Nothing to change here yet. CSI Premiered with a 2.0 but CBS “respects” this Show so I don’t see it moving to Friday/Sunday.

    THURSDAY
8:00 – The Big Bang Theory
    8:30 – NEW COMEDY
    9:00 – The Crazy Ones
    9:30 – NEW COMEDY
    10:00 – Elementary

If CBS keeps their 2-Hour Comedy Block on Thursday, they should use their two highest rated comedies to premiere new ones. Elementary stays where it is because it’s too weak for Sunday.

    FRIDAY
    8:00 – Undercover Boss
    9:00 – Hawaii Five-0
    10:00 – Blue Bloods

This night is working so far. Hawaii Five-0 helps Blue Bloods and both Shows will get a fifth Season.

    SUNDAY
    8:00 – The Amazing Race
    9:00 – NEW DRAMA
    10:00 – Person of Interest

CBS premiered Shows on Friday at 8 so why not on Sunday at 9 ? Person of Interest is not owned by CBS so they will use it at 10 to replace The Mentalist.

    Thoughts ?

  • HV

Oops, Intelligence on Thursdays at 10:00, not a new drama, and 3 new midseason dramas.

  • Ine

Hostages is my new favorite. It’s a great show! I think a lot of people would get hooked if they gave it a chance

  • Dan S

I think both H50 & BB on Fri will stick around next season. TGW is a bubble & TM on Sun is likely done. Assuming Elementary sees a 3rd season it’ll likely move to Sun perhaps with CSI. This is going to be the year CBS loses their crown to NBC.

  • DW

TGW isnt going anywhere. hulu , amazon , and streampix on comcast has it up on their services. thats three company’s paying for it then lifetime has it or one of the lady channels. also it caters to a high income demo and nets love that. they own the show too.

  • Dan

Hostages will last the full 15 episodes like Betrayal either in its current slot or maybe flipflopped with another drama (Hawaii 5-0) (Because its scheduled to be replaced by Intelligence) but it will not get a second season. Its more likely to just stay in its slot until January. (Like how Mob Doctor stayed in its slot until The Following replaced it)

We Are Men will be replaced by Mike & Molly soon and if its lucky, get a Saturday Burn Off. Mom will get a full season and maybe be replaced by Friends With Better Lives by Midseason, or if The Millers retains worse out of Big Bang it will be replaced with the show. Crazy Ones will get a full season.

The Good Wife and The Mentalist have both achieved syndication deals and over 100 episodes. They will be the veteran cancellations and are both done in May. Hopefully the creators know this and will give both series proper finales. HIMYM is in its final season and it may be Two and a Half Mens last season as well but its too early to tell.

All other series will return next season: CSI, NCIS, Criminal Minds, NCIS: LA, Hawaii 5-0, Blue Bloods, Person of Interest, Elemetary, The Big Bang Theory, 2 Broke Girls, Mike & Molly. If any of those got cancelled, I’d be surprised.

Why am I so certain Blue Bloods and Hawaii 5-0 will get fifth seasons you ask? They aren’t doing horrible for Fridays, CBS is unlikely to have drama hits this season, and CBS owns them both so 1 more season each to get them over 100 episodes is a certainty.

  • Sarie

‘Hostages’ is a once & done 15-part mini-series … I doubt CBS will bother cancelling it

  • Owen

Cannot seem them swap H50 and Hostages at this moment. I guess they rather have h50 boost Blue Bloods then hostages, who can rot away at monday 10 pm

  • Dan

@Owen and Sarie – You’re both right, there’s no point to pull Hostages because there is nothing to replace it with. CBS should stick with the original plan of Hostages 15 episodes and Intelligence 13 in the slot.

Flip Flopping Hawaii 5-0 and Hostages ins’t a good idea because Hawaii 5-0 is doing better on Fridays then Made in Jersey did and plus Hostages would hurt Blue Bloods. Both CBS and ABC are better off leaving Hostages and Betrayal in their slots respectively until they get replaced.

  • Karis

TGW predictions are just outrageous! This is one of the best tv shows out of there (excellent writing, great cast etc). I never understood all the hate for TGW but then again why bother when those who hate are the ones who root for Revenge and/or Scandal LOL are these 2 shows better written than TGW … I don’t think so Plus TGW has received Emmy love in the past, some ppl may not care about the Emmys but the Industry still does.

  • Doug

If CBS was going to expand sitcoms on Thursday, it should have done so last season. If HIMYM ending and 2.5 Men sputtering, it really doesn’t have enough depth. I predict calamity for CBS next season. It absolutely needs two of its new sitcoms to be 3.0+ hits.

  • Dan

@Karis – There’s a difference that about everyone running this site can tell you between hating a show (wishing it to end) and accurately predicting whether or not the series will be cancelled. For example The Good Wife is a great show but it is one of CBS’s least watched dramas not on fridays. Along with The Mentalist, It actually might rank lower than Hawaii 5-0 and Blue Bloods. Emmy love isn’t going to save The Good Wife from getting cancelled. The writers should give the show a proper finale like how CSI NY’s writers gave it 3 finales when it was on the bubble. The Good Wife has achieved syndication also and with 112 total episodes by seasons end, it doesn’t need another season.

My prediction will not change throughout this entire season. Every season CBS cancels 1-2 veteran dramas to make room for new shows

May 2010 – Cold Case, Numb3rs, Ghost Whisperer
    May 2011 – Medium
    May 2012 – CSI Miami
    May 2013 – CSI NY
May 2014 – The Mentalist & The Good Wife (Best Guess)
May 2015 – Hawaii 5-0 & Blue Bloods (Best Guess)

  • Karis

@KJStyles Umm TGW got 4 noms this year and Carrie Preston won LOL check your facts :)
