Even though it's a "limited series", Hostages would be renewed (just like that other limited series Under The Dome) were its ratings good enough. They aren't. It's likely to be canceled. For you comment thread lawyers, that means "It will not be renewed".

Mom premiered as CBS's lowest rated sitcom, and they always cancel their lowest rated sitcom (and they will, even with HIMYM ending), so for at least this week (until others go lower) it is likely to be canceled.

Unlike the Bubble Watch, the bear's not nearly ready to tap Hawaii Five-0 as likely to be canceled. This could be Hawaii Five-0's final season, but it started better than The Good Wife and even with The Mentalist, and it airs on Friday, which carries a certain ratings forgiveness. The bear wouldn't be surprised if it get lumped together in a group with The Mentalist and The Good Wife where one or two will be canceled, but the bear will puzzle over which, but let's wait and see.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

If you’re going to have a cancellation bear, why not a renewal bull? Just a thought…

He’s not a stock market bear, He’s a “two guys running away from a bear” bear.

    I really enjoy Mom… <3 Anna Ferris

Hostages is awesome with suspense and the plot. I want to see it out. HOWEVER b=not sure how this would last multiple seasons?

  • collette

Can’t believe the ratings for Hostages are so low? Who rates these things?

  • james

Hostages is a really good show im genuinely surprised and upset to see this news. i can only assume that there was a lacking in proper advertising or something along those lines because its definitely not a problem with the story.

  • KJ

CBS should cancel “Mom” and bring back Mike and Molly asap!!!

  • HV

    @collette
Ratings aren’t what people think of the show, it’s how many people are watching the show, or, more specifically, the percentage of a certain group (usually adults 18-49) watch the show. For example, last night The Big Bang Theory got a 5.0 rating, meaning that 5% of people in the US aged 18-49 watched it.

  • CBSviewer

CBS should cancel Mom, We Are Men and Two and a Half Men. Just Renew The Millers and The Crazy Ones.

  • Ryann

Anyone else think that maybe the reason CBS is doing so poorly is because they really don’t offer any way for people to keep up with their shows via streaming?? Hell, I can even watch cable shows through streaming, but CBS only lets you watch some of their shows on the computer. Their app is pretty crappy, and I personally began to boycott them because there is no easy way to watch them. I have kids, and I depend on streaming services to keep up with my shows after their initial broadcast. I know, not everyone is in the same situation, but I can’t be the only one that is getting fed up with their Natzi ways. I mean look at how they handled the whole cable situation this summer. They BLOCKED cable customers from even getting to their website, if they had a Time Warner IP address. Talk about crappy ethics, and only caring about money.

CBS was the #1 network in Adults 18-49 last season and has been the most watched network for most of the past decade.

    They aren’t doing poorly.

CBS only lets you watch some of their shows on the computer

Nonsense, all of CBS’ primetime entertainment shows are available on CBS.com and VOD.

They BLOCKED cable customers from even getting to their website, if they had a Time Warner IP address

I don’t see the problem; the rebroadcast fees that they charge the cable provider is what pays for the online streaming content. If the cable provider doesn’t want to pay the fees, their customers don’t get the content.

Other networks do this as well. If your cable provider doesn’t provide NBCSN in a basic package, then NBCSN streaming content is blocked.

We Are Men. It’s a stupid premise, they make fun of men who like younger women (like me) and shirtless guys are like cancer cells. It doesn’t matter how many you have, it’s still too many.

Oh yeah, and the show isn’t funny. As good as CBS’s Thursday lineup is doing (minus Two and a Half Men, which seriously needs to go into the sunset), it’s Monday lineup is looking like it’s on life support.

  • Katie

I don’t know what the deal is with hostages, it’s a good show. I guess people just aren’t even giving it a chance at all like usual with a lot of shows. Hawaii 5-0 is likely to be renewed even though the ratings aren’t much better?

  • patty

My faves are Castle, The Mentalist, Hostages and Blacklist. Putting Castle, Blacklist and Hostages all on at the same time is not giving them a fair chance – it is stupid – there would be more viewing if they were more spread out. I would hate to see any of these great shows cancelled.

  • joel

Reports of Mom’s death are premature. We Are Men will get the focus of CBS’ negative attention, and being a Chuck Lorre joint Mom will get plenty of opportunity for growth and adjustment.

  • a p garcia

Hostages will probably finish its limited run and then disappear never to be heard of again that is if its numbers stay around where they are. It would be nice to see H50 go back to Monday. TGW should have been cancelled last year.

  • Jake

    I predict CBS will cancel:
We Are Men, Mom & Hostages.

  • Melissa

The Good Wife has the death timeslot! It airs against Revenge, premiered against Breaking Bad and Dexter, and now Walking Dead is going to start. TGW is a great show that would do well at a different time!

  • Anna g

TGW is the best scripted and acted network show currently but it has unfortunate time slot, against Revenge and cable shows. However, it is and Emmy winning and prestigous show. I hope it sticks around for one more season. The Mentalist formula is exhausting, I mean how long can this guy chase Red John? TM seems like the most likely candidate for cancellation. Hawaii five o is save for now, it would have to collapse totally in ratings to be cancelled, bit I will be relatedwww when I read about renewal. Now, CBS.new comedies on Monday Re bust, MOM and We are men are sinking, they are likely to be cancelled. Elementary is relatively safe and the same goes for Person of interest, both likely renewals.

  • Peter Tatiner

Serves CBS right for moving TGW around like cheap furniture with no regard for its viewers, who have simply given up trying to locate and watch it. It’s a terrific show which deserves better: a stable broadcast day and time. And maybe a some respect from the network.
