Scandal Boom Goes the Dynamite Olivia

Scandal went from being a bubble show in season one to a big hit in season two. Tonight, it returns for its third season. Season two ended with several huge cliffhangers. The serialized show has been rerunning on BET all summer to potentially give new viewers a chance to catch up the way they do on Netflix for cable programs between seasons. ABC has done a lot of promotion and the legions of fans who have made the show a social media sensation have been hitting Twitter hard for weeks to make sure everyone on earth knows about it. Will all the hype pay off with a big premiere number? Last year, season two opened with a 2.1 adults 18-49 rating. The season two finale garnered a 3.2 adults 18-49 rating, growing over its Grey's Anatomy lead-in. So how do you think it will fare tonight? Make your predictions below then discuss your reasoning in the comments.

You cannot compare Revenge to Scandal. The first is a serial drama that airs after a once successful show which is now dropping rapidly. Scandal is behind a solid hit (Grey’s Anatomy) and they both air in different timeslots and on different days with different competition from broadcast and cable!

I think Parenthood could drag it down. I’ll say 2.9

  • Nasir

I was one that caught up on Netflix over the summer. Expecting at least a 3.4!

Also, cant wait for TVD & TO! Great night of television tonight.

  • CrimTV

All i’m hoping for is good numbers from The Vampire Diaries, The Originals and The Crazy Ones!

  • Juan

Ill be bold and say over 4

  • Ben W

@Roy you do not get the appeal of the show if you think the promos are dumb. CLASSIC Olivia Pope line and Kerry Washington delivery.

No way it gets anything lower than a 3.3. The buzz on the show is crazy and its turned casual tv viewers into diehard, appointment viewing fans. Parenthood will have absolutely no chance to bring it down (as much as I love it).

I’m going out on a limb to say that Scandal will hit a 4 or above a few times this season and I think the premiere could be one of those times. If it is not a 4, then it will be pretty darn close but analyzing the trends makes me think 4 and or above tonight. I see record viewers and demo for the show tonight. In fact, it will beat Elementary not just in the demos but also in viewers tonight.

I was laughed at last year when at the beginning of the season I said it would pretty quickly be beating Revenge; would get to a 3.0 in the demos; and especially when I said it would beat Greys before the season ended. All my scenarios played out so I’m feeling good about this year’s predictions.

I am going to say 4.0 as a high. It has all the major buzz from the finale and everything. Did u guys know Oprah Winfrey has promoted scandal as her must see show? She’s obsessed. Really abc needs to give it greys 9 pm slot next season and move greys back to Sunday’s at 10 it makes sense.

  • CrimTV

Why would ABC do that when their lineup is working anyway?

Revenge isn’t dropping rapidly it came back to good ratings. Revenge had huge buzz in season 1 but dropped the ball in 2 kind of like desperate housewives. Scandal started small but grew into mega buzz. I only wish abc had football and would air scandal after the super bowl to expose it to more viewers.?

  • NeNe Leakes

I wish Paris was this enthusiastic about The New Normal last season as she is about Scandal.

  • Andrew Dias

I assume is because they could nurture a new show out of Scandal. But you’re right. If you have a combo that works, don’t lose it.

  • Shepherd

Greys did 3.4 last week, and I’ve no reason to believe that Scandal can’t do the same. 3.4-3.5

On another note, it’s a shame that S.2 premier was so bad. Last nights episode was probably the best of the series, could have easily served as the season premier with only a few minor additions, and had they done so they may not have lost the majority of viewers who tuned in last week but decided to stop watching at some point and/or chose not to watch last night.

To the people bashing on Revenge. Please shut up. Revenge and Scandal are two completely different shows. Just because your views don’t line up with someone else’s doesn’t mean you have the right to verbally chastise them. Learn some respect for (a) both shows and (b) each other. That is all.

  • whyIcannotPost

Scandal will be the most popular tv show on broadcast when it gets the ratings and audience TBBT and Ncis are getting NOW. Scandal is far away from those numbers. Also I think The Blacklist is the best tv show at 10pm NOW.

@Roy, i laugh everytime i see that promo. Kerry Washington looks constipated when she says that line.

Watch it not even beat its season finale rating. The party is over Scandal fans. :D

I think it will be 3.4-3.5, it has had a lot of hype over the past month and I think that will help it surpass the season finale. Even though there is not much of an overlap in audience, baseball playoffs might knock it down a little bit.

  • John A

Ya know i dont know who i hate more Paris or all the people that respond to him.

  • ALex

Dang! People are so negative-both shows are good in their respective ways. I watch and love both. Yes Revenge fell but its doing better. I just hope Sohnda keeps up the good writing! (its hard to keep up-just look at Grey’s when the writing was pretty good then started to go down hill). As a Scandal fan I see it matching its finale but not beating it. It also depends on Grey’s performance tonight since Scandal isvery lead in dependent.
