Scandal Boom Goes the Dynamite Olivia

Scandal went from being a bubble show in season one to a big hit in season two. Tonight, it returns for its third season. Season two ended with several huge cliffhangers. The serialized show has been rerunning on BET all summer to potentially give new viewers a chance to catch up the way they do on Netflix for cable programs between seasons. ABC has done a lot of promotion and the legions of fans who have made the show a social media sensation have been hitting Twitter hard for weeks to make sure everyone on earth knows about it. Will all the hype pay off with a big premiere number? Last year, season two opened with a 2.1 adults 18-49 rating. The season two finale garnered a 3.2 adults 18-49 rating, growing over its Grey's Anatomy lead-in. So how do you think it will fare tonight? Make your predictions below then discuss your reasoning in the comments.

ABC really missed the mark by not switching Grey’s and Scandal this year.

  • Jonay Moon

Does anyone know when Lucky 7 will be canceled that show is an eyesore??

  • JackB

Scandal should achieve a strong 3.0-3.1 but with a higher 18-34 rating following Grey’s Anatomy. Elementary and Parenthood will be a strong #2 and #3 which by next Thursday Scandal will drop to #2 in viewers behind Elementary but will be #1 in 18-49 demo.

a 3 – 3.2 I think some of those saying 3.5 and over are way too optimistic. But who knows?

Be interesting to see if it takes points from Parenthood and Elementary or if there’s room for all three.

  • Bearkat

    A 3.3 sounds about accurate

  • grey

“Elementry” will take a hit tonight. Things may settle out in a couple of weeks.

Hope it won’t hurt too much Parenthood !

  • erwanfromfrance

Oh sorry, OUAT Wonderland won’t air Thursady, my bad.

  • ALex

I just hope the writing keeps up!! but I can see it preimering high and then staying in high 2’s

  • Ritchie

I think it’ll get about 11mil in viewers, I hope higher. C’mon Gladiators in Suits!

  • Shepherd

I just had a thought (very rare indeed), that Scandal will likely be beating Grey’s in the ratings week after week this season. Since Grey’s is one week ahead, Scandal kind of has a leg up for the foreseeable future.

    Gray’s – 3.1-3.2
    (Again) Scandal – 3.4-3.5

  • Bee

FINALLYYYYYYYYYYYYY! CANNOT WAIT for this gem of a show to be back.

keep in mind that this show has NEVERRR declined more than 0.2 at a time. never. it’s increased several tenths at once. but only ever decreased 0.1 or 0.2 if at all from week to week. it’s got the most steady fanbase on television. there is ZERO reason for scandal to go down from the spring. zero. there is every reason to think tonight could be HUGE. but weirder things have happened.

    safe prediction: 3.0
    dream prediction: 4.0
    i’ll go with.. 3.5 lol

    I went w/ the majority & think >3.5

Nothing on cable to sway the masses & neither CBS nor NBC will stop it. Social medial has created a monster & BET has exposed more eyes to the “candy.”

    Full STEAM ahead!

  • Alan

I voted for 3.5> but I’m sure it will be a little lower than that. I expect more than 3.0

  • Alan

I’m done with Scandal fans. It’s obvious that it will be the highest rated show of that timeslot because it’s against a harmless NBC show and Elementary! while Revenge it’s against not only HUGE shows and it still delivers solid ratings. They need to look at facts and stop making stupid comments.

  • David Howell

I’m going to predict it comes in just below last season’s finale number at a 3.1, and am increasingly convinced I’m going to be horribly wrong. If this does take off like a cable drama on the back of the BET reruns, I don’t see how it lasts at 10pm even for the rest of the season. (Two-hour episode in a sweeps period to test the water for moving it to 9?)

To think this nearly got cancelled to make way for GCB!

  • Jay

    Marginal improvement.

  • avstylez

Scandal is among the great shows on t.v right now..the writing is superb..the chemistry among the cast is has shown growth in viewers over the past 2 seosons it the Grey Anatomy lead in, it has, i definately see a 3.5 tonight..#Finally on thursday, i can watch something worth my interest, now that best drama is back..#Go Gladiators lol
