With Lucky 7 becoming the first #bearchow of the season, and Betrayal certain to follow (but not clear when), after it's ratings tumble in episode 2 the Cancellation Bear is now making Trophy Wife likely to be canceled. It started fine, at 95% of ABC's first week average rating, but plunged to less than 60% in week 2. That's likely to feed the bear.

FYI, The bear doesn't like to predict a new show "certain to be renewed" until he sees 2-3 episodes worth of ratings.

The ABC syndication gods will demand that Once Upon A Time and Revenge be renewed for a fourth season. For that reason, they're both certain to be renewed, effectively regardless of their third season ratings.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

So you’re not even going to comment on Agents of SHIELD? Meh.

I still say “The Neighbors” is likely cancelation but agree with rest of post

  • Bill Gorman

“So you’re not even going to comment on Agents of SHIELD? Meh.”

The prediction is in the post, it was ABC’s second highest rated show. What else is there to say?

  • Nerdbot

I love seeing Revenge with the five smiles, but I hate that it is closer to the bottom of the list than to the top, in terms of its index. It’s the worst performer of the ones that have their renewal as a sure thing. :|

  • Bill Gorman

“I still say “The Neighbors” is likely cancelation but agree with rest of post”

That’s what the table reads, so I guess you agree with all of the post!

  • Brandon

Too bad about Trophy Wife, it’s my favorite new show this season.

  • Jonay

Can someone explain why ABC keeps trying to put a new drama Sundays @ 10 ??it does not work put somthing old there! Maybe they should have kept BOP scheduel sparkle!

  • Pat

I don’t want to live in a world where Super Fun Night gets picked up over Trophy Wife.

  • chloe

Is Last man standing likely to be renewed because of 3rd season, someone please answer.

  • Bill Gorman

“Is Last man standing likely to be renewed because of 3rd season, someone please answer.”

Yes, the syndication gods are assisting its chances.

  • Ultima

Maybe they should have kept BOP schedule sparkle!

    @ Bill

Just making sure you weren’t asleep at the wheel!

  • Ryan

I hope ABC shows some patience with Trophy Wife. It would probably do well if it just gets sampled enough.

    @ Jonay

Maybe they should reboot “Mission Impossible” for Sunday nights @ 10:00!

  • chloe

@Bill Gorman so that means it will be renewed

  • Luke21

This is my idea for ABC’s Schedule for next year:
    Sundays: 8 Once (march9) 9 Revenge (march9) 10 Castle (March 16)
Mondays: 8-10 Dancing with the stars (march17) 10 Nashville (march17)
Tuesdays: 8 Agents of SHIELD 9Mixology 9:30 SFN 10: Mind Games (ALL JANUARY)
Wednesday: The Middle, The Goldbergs. Modern Family, Trophy Wife. Killer Woman (ALL JANUARY)
    Thursday: 8 Resurrection 9 Grey’s Anatomy 10 Scandal (ALL FEB. 27)
Friday: Back in the Game, Last Man Standing. Shark Tank. 20/20. (ALL JANUARY)
Betrayal should end its 13ep run. Wonderland will have as much as 18eps according to the creators. I think Castle is the only think that can actually fix Sundays at 10 and Nashville should do better on Mondays after DWTS. And I think resurrection is a family show, so, 8pm it is. And also, 1 hour burn offs for The Neighbors instead of reruns of Fridays comedies. Castle should air 9 eps. in fall, 4 in January and 10 on spring.

I expected you to jump on, what might be your last chance to call Betrayal’s cancellation in the headline. Or was that last week already? lol

  • omabin

I agree with you in almost everything.
    – Modern Family: Certain Renewal
    – The Middle: Certain Renewal
    – Last Man Standing: Likely Renewal
    – The Goldbergs: Likely Renewal (or Bubble but ok)
    – Back in the Game: Bubble
    – Trophy Wife: Likely Cancellation
    – The Neighbors: Likely Cancellation

    – Once Upon a Time: Certain Renewal
    – Scandal: Certain Renewal
    – Revenge: Certain Renewal
    – Grey’s Anatomy: Certain Renewal
    – Agents of Shield: Likely Renewal
    – Castle: Very Likely Renewal
    – Nashville: Bubble
    – Betrayal: Certain Cancellation
    – Lucky 7: Cancelled

    Disagreements are:
    – Last Man Standing: It’s pulling reasonable numbers for friday that would make it a tossup and not a likely cancellation were it not for syndication. Add to that syndication and it is a likely, if not certain renewal.
    – Nashville: it’s actually been doing better than i thought it would particularly the second episode, but the thing is: if ABC premieres 3 new dramas next fall, if not more (this year they premiered 4), as it has done every year, then in order for Nashville to come back ABC either has to cancel Wonderland or Shield (I don’t see any of the veterans not coming back) or it has to cancel the 4th comedy hour, both of these assuming no midseason entry makes it. Because I think there is a chance both Shield and Wonderland make it and because I think ABC has been too high on comedy despite all the tuesday failures, I think Nashville is bubble.

  • Carmen

Trophy Wife is at least as good as the “be sure to lower the volume” Goldbergs and far superior to the horrible Super Fun Night which will sink faster than the Titanic (even buoyed up by Modern Family)

  • Rebecca

I like Trophy Wife so I hope it lasts a while longer. Also enjoying SFN and The Goldbergs. The rest of my shows are either still pretty safe or I don’t care as much about them. Still enjoying The Neighbors, too.
