Now with all the new Fall CBS sitcom premieres in the rear view mirror, We Are Men has dropped to the back of the pack, premiering just ahead of the Cancellation Bear with CBS' lowest Fall season sitcom premiere ratings ever. It's certain to be canceled.

The formerly lowest rated sitcom, Mom, is hardly out of the woods (bear metaphor!). I've moved it back to toss up while it and the Thursday sitcoms settle in, it may be back to likely canceled soon enough. Stay tuned.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Should come a poll with ‘When will Hostages be released?’
    – A week
    – Sometime on a Saturday
    – Swap it with The Mentalist or H50
    – If Saturday, where will the reruns of something air (sunday 10, monday 10 or friday 9?)
    – Will it coincede with the return of Mike & Molly
    – Rabbit out of the hat like Unforgettable/Reckless/Intelligence

    @Bill
We are Men is labeled as likely, not certain.

    Blue Bloods (F) :) :) :) :) 0.59

    Hawaii Five-0 (F) :) :) :) :) 0.59

Wow…a 4 way tie for last place!

    “@Bill
We are Men is labeled as likely, not certain.”

That’s what you get for traveling all day and trying to get something posted quickly!

  • THE OLD MAN

Intersting that TGW, BB, TM & H50 are all tied w/0.59 as the suspense will continue probably until next spring

Agree w/ the fate of WAM & Moms

Maybe We Are Men should be replaced with “We Are Devo: D-E-V-O!” (JUST A THOUGHT)

  • Noel

I just hope Elementary lasts good enough this season 2, so it can get the safe 3rd season and a 4th final season. Of course if it gets more than that, great! But at least I hope it survives a la nikita sort of thing.

  • Dan

We Are Men will be cancelled tomorrow, hello Mike & Molly next week.

Hostages will probably air all it’s episodes but the question is where and when.

Mom, The Millers and Crazy Ones will all get 16-20 eps

22 for Mom, 18 for Millers, and 16 for Crazy Ones.

Since CBS is packed in the comedy department, they don’t need a ton of episodes for all 3 comedies.

  • Ahsan

Sad :/ Quite like the show

  • Jonay

Isn’t The Millers already dead? With out The Big Bang Theory it will fall just like The Crazy Ones!

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“Isn’t The Millers already dead? With out The Big Bang Theory it will fall just like The Crazy Ones!”

When will it air without The Big Bang Theory?

    Next season, you say?

Well, then it will have been renewed!

  • Heather

This is sad. We are Men is much better than Two and a Half Men is now, or has been for some time.

Yay for Bill’s return to the index! :) lol

For the most part I agree here except that I am actually ready to downgrade the mentalist to likely cancellation. I am also surprised you put the crazy ones as certain after two episodes, one of which followed tbbt, despite you saying on the abc post you don’t do it so soon. I do think it will be renewed quite comfortably, but for now I will have it one more week as likely. The biggest disagreement I have though is Two and a Half Men.

The Big Bang Theory: Certain Renewal
    2 Broke Girls: Certain Renewal
How I Met Your Mother: Ending
    The Crazy Ones: Likely Renewal
    The Millers: Likely Renewal
Two and a Half Men: Bubble
    Mom: Bubble
    We Are Men: Certain Cancellation

    Person of Interest: Certain Renewal
    NCIS: Certain Renewa
    NCIS LA: Certain Renewal
    Criminal Minds: Likely Renewal
    CSI: Likely Renewal
    Hawaii Five-0: Likely Renewal
    Blue Bloods: Likely Renewal
    Elementary: Likely Renewal
    The Good Wife: Bubble
    The Mentalist: Likely Cancellation
    Hostages: Certain Cancellation

It’s hard to imagine a scenario in which CBS doesn’t cancel a veteran this year (though I think it’s possible, but unlikely due to the combination of factors it would require). When that happens, I think The Mentalist will be it. Two and a Half Men’s ratings have been disappointing, the show is expensive and I think there is a good chance they go back to 3 hours of comedy (2 on thursday + 1 on monday) if things continue the way they are. If that happens, I could see them doing away with man. It could easily come back, but there is a possibility it doesn’t, so I prefer to keep it on the bubble.

With regard to We Are Men,

I think Tony Shalhoub’s character has some potential, but I don’t think too much of the rest of the cast – except maybe the girl who plays (Shalhoub’s) daughter.
Jerry O’Connell needs to stay in back of the camera. He has talent there.
Kal Penn and the other guy are kind of bland.

But the bottom line is, Tony Shalhoub cannot carry this alone.

    With regard Mom

I think its pretty good, and is functioning OK in a very tough spot. It probably looked easier to CBS before Sleepy Hollows reception was known.
Mom would do at least as well as either The Crazy One or especially The Millers in their spots. I look for Mom to move to Thursday later this season to replace one of those other 2 shows.

I would be surprised if We Are Men makes it that far. Hostages might just due to the short season, but I doubt that too.

Elementary is off to a rocky start. I would not classify it as more than a toss up just yet. I think there will be a general drop off in numbers if the currently lower writing quality continues.

“Elementary is off to a rocky start. I would not classify it as more than a toss up just yet.”

    Rocky compared to what?

It’s in a dead heat with CSI and POI at 10pm. That’s not a situation that leads to cancellation. CBS hasn’t canceled a second season drama since 2008. Elementary will have to drop a lot further to cause them to do it again.

“I think there will be a general drop off in numbers if the currently lower writing quality continues.”

I don’t guess at future ratings. If they fall far enough, as always, predictions will change.

Two and a half men has been terrible this year.

  • Fake Me Out

I’m trying to like Mom but just can’t … it should be good with the talent in front of and behind the camera but, so far, I’m not lovin’ it. I usually don’t like to point fingers, but a small part of the problem that can fixed is her boss/lover … he needs to go.

We Are Men is … surprisingly ok. It’s not wall to wall laughs but so far it’s been a fun 20+ minutes. If it goes, it goes and I won’t really miss it. If it sticks around it may grow but today it seems low ratings get the hook so fast shows don’t have a chance, slime as it may be, at a rebound.

I say Hostages is gone by this Friday. CBS Monday may be weakening but this show is in total free fall.

I don’t know if they’re finally trying to tweak the humour on 2BG but last nights episode seemed to me to not be so heavily reliant on body functions. Oh it was still there but just not as much or as obvious and it’s the first episode that I’ve really enjoyed in a long time spank you very much.

    ymmv

  • DenverDean

CBS really needs to swap either TGW or TM with Hostages. Move Hostages to 10 on Sunday it’s the death slot. No point in swapping H50 with Hostages – it will only hurt BB, which defeats the purpose.
