Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from September 16-October 6, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Originals :) :) :) :) 0.91
Vampire Diaries      1.09
Hart Of Dixie
Nikita final season

With only two CW episodes aired so far through Sunday, the only thing that can be said for rookie drama The Originals is that its premiere rating didn't mark it as immediate #bearchow. Anything more than that requires seeing more CW ratings for this season, for it, and other CW shows.

The CW syndication gods will also demand that Hart Of Dixie be renewed for a fourth season.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

It’ll be interesting to see where B&TB is on next week’s list.

  • Kimberly

Anything is better than the HOD and BatB premieres last night, but I feel confident that The Originals will do similar numbers to its Thursday premiere. I’m actually hoping it’ll premiere up in its regular timeslot, but who knows for sure?

  • CrimTV

It’s funny how in a couple of weeks, the 1.0 that The Originals scored would be over a 1.00 on the index.

  • tv#1

    Possible CW Mid-Season schedule…

    Hart of Dixie

    The Originals

    The Tomorrow People

    The Vampire Diaries
    The 100

    Beauty and the Beast

Agree w/ post & will be back to see updates

  • Jonay

Like Why The CW does not promote their shows until a week until it premieres??!

  • Kimberly

Take this with a grain of salt (since I don’t normally watch CW), but they probably don’t have a whole lot of cash to promote their shows.

    @everyone else

How long before CW dies? How long will CBS and TimeWarner bite the bullet of these abhorrent ratings? I mean, are they on their way to hurting the parent companies’ profits, or is it still producing a small bit of profit?

  • Matt

Wow, I missed The CW. This should be a fun season. Rooting for The Originals and The Tomorrow People to make it out alive!

  • Anna

Once Nitkita ends CW can go off the air, as everyting else is crap.

  • DTravel

Mr. Gorman, don’t you know that dividing by zero is how you make black holes. And you did it twice!

  • HV

    Here are my (few) predictions:
Note: A show must air at least two episodes this season to be listed as “very likely renewal/cancelation”.

    The Originals

    The Vampire Diaries

    @ Anyone who knows

When are many/most of the CW affiliate contracts set to expire? Is it before the 2015-2016 season or after or in the middle?

I just have a feeling many will try to go indie or form a loose ‘network’ of sorts on their own. All they need is to snag one show like TBBT and air it 6 times a night, 7 nights a week and they’ll get better ratings than most of the CW line up. Even an old show may work … a Seinfeld cable marathon in the land down under saw it scoop 11 of the top 20 ratings spots on Monday and 8 out of 20 on Sunday … not bad for a 20+ year old show.

  • CraveRecords

Aren’t most CW affiliates owned by Warner or CBS? I suppose they could transfer some of the shows to their cable nets but I don’t see them leaving owned and operated affiliates out to dry any time soon. (And with the Big 4 broadcasting shows not far from CW ratings levels it’s looking like it might soon be the Small 5.)

  • Contrarian

As always too bad the rc index doesn’t predict the cancellations of whole networks. I think quite a few cw affiliates are tribune stations and if they bail?

  • chrys

Other than the various shows we all watch and like, the CW airs nothing but crap–infomercials and the 700 club.

  • Jon

Wow at those HoD and BatB ratings
0.4 for HoD on mondays LOL it should be done for.
BatB is dead noway in hell are the CW gonna renew a sophmore show starting with 0.3 on mondays

  • Jean

@Kimberly Calm down. You know there are places in The USA that don’t even receive The CW, right? it’s not a network present in almost the whole country like the big 4.
CW shows could surely do better in general, but its series are really popular outside The US. I’m living in Italy and last year Arrow has been the Most Watched American Series here. Even more than NCIS, which is the most watched series in the USA.
CW series sell well. And remember the deals with Netflix and Hulu.
CW isn’t dying. Warner and CBS shouldn’t be that worried.

  • A

So do you think HoD will get a full season order? I mean the syndication gods didn’t really demand a Nikita renewal, and I see HoD following a similar path, maybe not even a closing 6 episode arc. Will 73 episodes even sell better then 67?

  • Jean

And seriously, take a look at Beauty and The Beast’s competition(The Voice, Dancing With The Stars, Sleepy Hollow, 2 Broke Girls and Mom). Given the results obtained so far(I’m talking about the competitors), it looks like the hardest.

  • Alan

BATB and Reign are already dead.
    Syndication will save HoD.
The Originals will be picked up for a full season, but if ratings go down, it won’t get renewed.
    Everything else is safe.
