A third of its audience was watching Scandal live?

  • Matt

Scandal and Greys has always and will always dominate the Thursday Night Drama competition. Oh, and Scandal garnered a better 18-49 demo rating then both Elementary and Parenthood combined last Thursday.

Fascinating that Elementary actually beat Scandal in total viewers after all this buzz and hype and +3. I know +3 is a Jedi mind trick and all, but I do wonder how CBS can get those viewers to watch Elementary live. Is CBS capable to promoting a show to a buzz? I can’t bring myself to think so.

Not only is +3 a Jedi Mind Trick, but total viewership is too. The CBS PR Jedi have many weapons at their disposal.

I know the demo reigns supreme. But CBS rarely wins a 10pm demo war. I’m just more interested in Elementary’s longterm outlook. I think it has the makings of one of its slow-burn hits if it reaches syndication. It’s a bit different than your typical CBS procedural. More serialized and narrative.

I just really want to see it succeed. I feel like character development is a lost arc and that a decade + of CBS procedural fare has completely eroded the CBS audience attention span. I want to believe a character-first CBS drama can survive to have some success. I’m not sure CBS has anything in its stable that could compete in the demo with Scandal.

Broken record time, but winning vs. the other guys is *also* a Jedi Mind Trick. ;)

All that matters is ratings vs. shows on the same network. (plus non-public info like syndication $)

And there, Elementary is doing just fine. It’s effectively in a dead head with POI and CSI. CBS isn’t going to cancel a 2nd season show in that position.

So what do you think is Elementary’s outlook? Will CBS coddle it to syndication?

  • Epidrone

Just read your edit. Thanks. :)

Note comment above (perhaps edited while you were responding).

No coddling needed at current levels, but may be later in the show’s life.

CBS hasn’t canceled a second season drama in 6 seasons.

Thanks for the insight. Do you think it’s found a floor right now since he retained the premiere fairly well against the premiere of Scandal?

Thanks again. I feel a bit better now. I rarely get attached to shows like this.
