CBS announced today the Fan Built “Five-0” initiative where HAWAII FIVE-0 producers invite viewers to help build an episode of the Friday night crime drama by going to CBS.com  to select key story elements to be broadcast later this season.

For the next three weeks, viewers can log onto http://www.cbs.com/H50vote to vote on the following six key story points of an episode: Scene of the Crime, The Victim, The Murder Weapon, The Evidence, The Suspect and The Takedown.  Within each element, there are seven choices.

When the voting on these six key elements closes on Oct. 31, the HAWAII FIVE-0 writing staff will begin crafting the script using the winning results.  After the New Year, before the episode begins production in Oahu, Hawaii in February, viewers will continue to have input on other important elements in the episode throughout its production, such as props, cast wardrobe, music and the title.

“Viewers loved helping figure out the ‘whodunit’ episode last season,” said Executive Producer Peter Lenkov.  “Now, we want to up the ante by having viewers’ input on the production of a show.  From story to props, viewers will help call the shots. And yes, this is fun for me when I get to see just how creative our writers can be when the key elements are chosen.”

“We are always looking for ways to engage with our viewers and reward fan loyalty,” says Glenn Geller, Executive Vice President, Current Programming for CBS.   “A Fan-Built Five-0 is another great example of how Peter Lenkov thinks outside the box in order to deliver exciting and original stories to the viewers.”

“Last season's ‘choose-your-own-ending’ vote marked a television first,” said Marc DeBevoise, EVP and GM, Entertainment, News & Sports for CBS Interactive.  “With this episode, we're building on that milestone by creating interactive elements that give fans the ability to help shape the episode.”

    well, that sounds great.

  • a p garcia

I favor an episode where an aging Magnum(Tom Seleck) ask his old friend and former Seal(McGarett)and HF0 team to help solve a cold case.

  • AllOfHerTw!st

That doesn’t sound gimmicky at all. Oh, wait; yeah it does. Does this kind of stunt (fan interaction) ever help ratings?

And bring in Rick and TC, too. If they’re still alive.

  • AllOfHerTw!st

The main PI cast is all still alive — even Higgins!

  • HV

I don’t even watch the show but I’m going to vote anyway :P

  • TV Viewer

Rick (Larry Manetti) has already made an appearance on the new Hawaii Five-O.
I agree that bringing back all the other Magnum P.I. actors, either all on one program, or individual actors on seperate shows, is a good idea.

I hate to say it but this little gimmick has kinda worked on me because I was thinking of dropping this show but I kinda wanna see what they come up with

    Well played H50, well played

“And bring in Rick and TC, too. If they’re still alive.”

Now, see, this is the product of pandering to 18-34 year-olds and a piss-poor math education from our crooked educational system.

If Magnum were 20 years old in 1970 in Vietnam (to make a rough guess – too unimportant to scan Wikipedia…) that means he was born in 1950.

Making him 63 now – hardly likely to have shuffled off this mortal coil unless he fell into a volcano after being hit with a poisonous toad thrown by a synchronized swimmer (upon orders from Professor Plum in the Conservatory).

Tom Selleck is 68 and obviously alive, playing the commish on Blue Bloods. I wasn’t sure about the fate of the rest of the cast, since I haven’t seen the other guys in anything lately. You know, people sometimes die young. I’m coincidentally a data analyst for a trillion-dollar company, and I finished at the top of my college classes in math and statistics. But if it makes you feel superior saying that other people are stupid, knock yourself out.

    @TV Viewer

I didn’t realize that Larry Manetti had appeared on the show already. I’m only through about October of last year on my H50 watching.

  • nope

there are some impossible scenarios that I hope the internet is smart enough to vote for. who am i kidding, they would just fix it to whatever they want.. because.. how could they…

have a race car driver kill an astronaut on a volcano with a poisoned jacuzzi, then have the suspect later taken down by a sniper hunter robot once they find the kitty litter?

  • Igwell

That’s nice. The Manatees deserve a week off.

  • AniMatsuri

Some episodes are written by committee. This one will almost be written by the masses. Should be interesting.

  • ha

Chin Ho’s High School Reunion, Astronaut, Five Inch Stiletto, Toy Rocket, Struggling Illusionist, Giant Maze.

Honestly all the combos will lead to a wacky episode.
