I never have asked about daytime but are the daytime soaps not delayed til later on the West Coast too?

I know that on the Big Brother boards that I am a member of many times the feeds were cut off and many would say they probably would not be turned back on until the show aired on the West Coast. I know when Big Brother aired at 8 on the East Coast it was still 5 p.m. on the West Coast and people were just getting off work.

GH airs at 2 p.m. at the East Coast? In the Central Zone GH comes on concurrently but at 1 p.m.

The next time zone over includes Denver? Does GH come on at Noon there (airing at the same time as the East Coast)? And then on over to the West Coast it would be 11 a.m. in say Los Angeles? Is GH on then or is it time delayed until later?

The reason I ask all this is the discussion of the pre-emptions for GH on that day? What were the pre-emptions in all these places that were discussed?

I know the one night that Obama spoke during part of an episode of Big Brother it was interrupted here but later it was not when shown on the West Coast. It was 8 on the East Coast when he spoke but still 5 on the West Coast.

I’m just asking because I am trying to learn something and learn how all this works. Just have usually heard of pre-emptions only affecting shows on one coast or the other. And have heard of shows being pre-empted on the East Coast and then later pulled from the schedule on the West Coast.

I know I have missed parts of episodes of Y&R that were pre-empted and then later caught them on You Tube where they were not pre-empted and the full episode was there.

Mike…In primetime, shows tend to air at the same time despite time zone. If a series airs at 8 Eastern but 7 Central, that is still the time, as it is 7 PM in the Central zone when it is 8 PM in the Eastern zone. The Mountain zone is one hour behind (most 8 PM series air at 7 PM Mountain time, which would actually work out to 7 PM if airing in Eastern time). Pacific time is the same as Eastern time…a series that airs at 8 PM Eastern will not air until 8 PM Pacific, which is 11 PM Eastern.

The daytime hours are a little bit different. According to the CBS website, “The Talk” airs at 2 PM Eastern, but 1 PM Central and Pacific. “Let’s Make a Deal” can be aired by local CBS stations either before “Price is Right” or after “The Talk”, and affiliates can air the soaps really whenever they want to (such as the several NBC affiliates moving “Days of Our Lives” around). Daytime remains the Wild West when it comes to when certain shows air in any given market.

  • Mike

Jay — I have always fully understood the Central and Eastern as I have lived in both time zones.

The Mountain and Pacific ones I have wondered about.

Most times when pre-emptions have been talked about they usually affect 2 time zones at the most, but the places mentioned here have been across at least 3 time zones for the same show. Just trying to figure it out and wondering if they were all for the President speaking or for various reasons.

Whatever? Days numbers are down again. I can not fathom this. It has really been good the last couple of weeks. And with the stars promoting their new cook book and their show, numbers still went down. Ha, that makes me laugh. People have ranked Days as their number 5 favourite daytime drama of all time(ABC pole). TV guide ranks it the number 5 PVR show being downloaded. I know those numbers of being downloaded or PVR aren’t what the advertisers look at, but it still shows that there are fans of the show watching. If those fan favourites do return to the soap, it should help them. But I know that it doesn’t necessarily help the show. Look at GH with all their returning characters. Days has got to come up with something different. I know they can do it. NBC support your jewel and advertise the show more in primetime.

  • JayTN

Mike…I know they don’t use this expression much anymore, but a good rule of thumb about time variances is that a series will air at – for example – 8 PM Eastern/Pacific and 7 PM Central/Mountain. This mainly applies to primetime, as daytime is more or less left up to local affiliates and their discretion.

@mike you look hot if that’s your pic.

  • Tim

DAYS has been great the last two months,do not understand the rating and do not care,it doesn’t matter who they bring back, nothing gonna change. Two years ago the brought back Marlena/John…Carrie/Austin…adriene/Justin….I do not see anything big about Kimberly & Shane coming back, yes it will be nice to see them, but in a months time nobody will care….I love DAYS right now, keep up the good work,if fans don’t wanna watch it,don’t cry when its Cancelled soon…Tim Days fan of over 40 years…

  • Mike

Wow just read at SON that Genie Francis, Bradford Anderson & Sean Kanan have both been fired at GH.

    Just wow!!!!!!

  • Mike

I guess retract that last post. When I was there they were on page 6 of the discussion and now the thread has been removed.

So not sure what is going on.

  • Mike

Evidently the admins have hid the thread until sources can be verified. That is what I get.

  • robert sprague

well gh just bought its owe death with letting genie francis go . I my self don’t know if I will continue to watch .

  • Mike

I hate it about Genie if indeed it is true. But the biggest shock for me was Sean Kanan.

They brought him back to such big hoopla and boasted about doing right by the Quartermains, righting a wrong done, and then now letting him go.

It will prove though what many of us have said that a person can be let go before their contract is up. Kanan was hired after the OLTL 3 who fans tried to say couldn’t be let go by ABC because they had contracts.

ABC and GH could have let them go if they wanted, but they didn’t want to.

It will be interesting to see how all this folds out once SON verifies its sources and the news unfolds — if it is all true.

  • jonboyelk

Hope the GH news isn’t true. Genie is a staple for GH. Kind of like AMC without Erica, OLTL without Vickie, Y&R without Victor, DOOL without Marlena. And it seems strange they’d dump Kanan only a year later, although they haven’t really done a lot with AJ. But they go and give Bryan Craig (Morgan) a three year contract! Go figure!

  • robert

Saw General Hospital beat Y&R in the demo in the new ratings.

  • Marissa

Genie has come and gone so many times at GH. I’ll be really disappointed (again) if the news is true. I’m not an AJ fan, so I could care less about AJ.

Anxious to see the new ratings.

  • Mike

Genie has only come and gone at GH in recent years due to the powers that be not wanting a woman her age to be featured. Genie would have stayed these last few years if the people running ABC had wanted her but they made it clear they didn’t.

Even after the way she was treated she returned again. But even Tony Geary made it clear in his interviews he doesn’t want to work with her.

  • Marissa

Meanwhile – GH appears to be moving full steam ahead with Luke & Tracy Q. *shrugs*

  • JayTN

Mike…I’ve never been a fan of Tony Geary. I’ve always viewed him as a vain, egotistical actor (i.e. demanding the summers off, which is why Luke always seems to vanish for a few months each year). His recent interview in TV Guide Magazine doesn’t do much to rehabilitate the situation. His attitude may have flown when GH – and the rest of the daytime soaps – was riding high back in the 1980s (during the height of the Luke/Laura craze), but not now in the current environment that the soaps find themselves in (i.e. budget and salary cuts).
