The average viewership increase From DVR Viewing ranks which of the top broadcast shows [by Live+7 viewers] had the largest absolute increase in average viewership by DVR between the Live + Same Day and Live + 7 day ratings measurements.

Definitions:

DVR (Time-shifted) Adults 18-49 Ratings – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data LiveLive+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs.

Live+Same Day(Live+SD) ratings include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing.

Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

DVR Ratings Increase Past Airdate - How many people watched the show on their DVRs within 7 days following the airdate

Until the 2009-2010 season, we used a show's LIVE program rating or viewership as the base upon which the LIVE+7 day DVR viewing was added. Now, the press seems to be standardizing around using LIVE+SAME DAY DVR viewing as the base for the calculations, so that's what we do now as well.

Do the Live+7 ratings tell us anything about a show's renewal prospects we didn't already know from the Live+Same Day ratings?  No.  Click here to learn more.

    @Kissan

    I think it’d either be B99/New Girl or Surviving Jack/NG. The second option would work if SJ replaces Dads , essentially becoming B99’s lead in

  • Winston

    Too bad these numbers don’t have too much of a day in renewals, if any.

  • Midnight

    Elementary has crazy DVR numbers. It and Sleepy Hollow are the only shows in the top 10 for each category. I wonder if Elementary is actually in the wrong timeslot against Scandal and would actually benefit from a move, even to Sunday.

  • Matt

    17 million and a 7.0 demo for SHIELD! Wow! The second week will probably around a 5.5 in DVR, which is sill huge. It will probably always be around a 5.0 in DVR, which is very good.

    Awesome for all shows. Really wish that networks payed attention and cared about DVR ratings and increases.

  • Alec

    Revenge increased 1.2 not 1.1 I think.

  • Matt

    Ha. Scandal’s live premiere still beat Elemntary’s premiere in the demo with the 7 day DVR increase. Quite pathetic.

    Expecting scandal to jump close to about a 5.0 in the demo with the 7 day increase.

  • Alecia

    @midnight

    As a fan of both I would love if they weren’t against each other but I don’t think there is much of a crossover audience to really impact each other. While elementary ratings were falling last fall Scandal’s remain pretty consistent in the 1.8-2.0 range until late november when it started rising. And this season’s premiere was up against a repeat of Scandal. I’m thinking maybe an earlier timeslot could help it.

  • Mon

    Yep, 2 Broke Girls did well (+1.1) considering it went up against a heavily DVR’d show Sleepy Hollow. I hope it benefits from its move to 8:30.

    CBS 10pm dramas also had huge gains. I’m most especially impressed at CSI because after all these years people still want to check it out. SVU did well too.

    Too bad TBBT’s special at 8:30 (+2.5) can’t be included. It would have easily topped in gains and live + 7.

  • Chris J

    I was hoping for a higher demo bump for The Blacklist. It appears to trend older than Revolution did last year.

    It’s number (live and DVR) look more like CBS numbers, which is not necessarily a bad thing for NBC.

    NBC probably prefers a steady show that attracts young and old alike (Blacklist) versus an uber young skewing show with sinking numbers (Revolution).

  • tunnelvision

    Sleepy Hollow DVR bomb!

    Revenge yes! :D

  • Tyson

    Stephen,

    DVR numbers matter only if advertisers want to pay for viewers who are probably skipping commercials. In other words, no.

  • Niallerz24

    Networks need to begin taking DVR ratings into account now along with the Live ratings. Nashville is doing well enough Live but doing really well in the DVRs.

  • JR35

    To find any value in DVR numbers, you can’t really just go by these charts alone. So to say something’s doing well in DVR numbers… Okay, but let’s see where it’s ranked in an all-inclusive list, that adds the DVR numbers to the Live/Same-Day numbers. Networks may look at a such a chart, for all we know.

  • Ultima

    Since the list excludes specials, just want to add that the 8:30pm airing of The Big Bang Theory would have topped both lists in absolute gains (+2.5 for an 8.6 Adults 18-49 and +5.71M for 26.15 million viewers).

  • Ultima

    @Niallerz
    Networks need to begin taking DVR ratings into account now along with the Live ratings.

    Just like networks need to take into account older viewers?

    If the advertisers are only interested in C-live or C+3 ratings for pricing, then it’s irrelevant who is watching 4+ days out.

    Nashville is doing well enough Live but doing really well in the DVRs.

    Relative ratings matter, not absolute ratings. From a quick glance at the list, it doesn’t seem that Nashville is getting any benefit at all from Live+7 ratings (it’s still behind Castle, Once and Revenge).

  • Ultima

    @Stephen Judson
    Will these numbers matter when it comes to the the renewal/cancellation process?

    No, you should ignore them entirely in that regard.

    Even if DVR ratings did matter, it rarely has a meaningful impact on the relative strength of bubble shows (much like Adults 25-54 ratings).

    People who exclaim that their show is doing so well in Live+7 are often making the mistake of comparing those numbers to what they expect to be good in Live+SD numbers (i.e. they forget that every other show is getting a Live+7 boost as well).

  • Melissa

    Big lift for Sleepy Hollow.

  • LANDO’S SON

    Way to go Person of Interest, over 16 millions viewers after dvr views and 2.3 to 3.3,18-49 demo,as well. Yes!! :)

  • Doug

    Wow @ those TBBT numbers for 8:30. It’s the highest rated sitcom since Friends, and perhaps even moreso given the current climate versus 10 or 15 years ago. It does skew a bit older, though.

    These numbers can also be used as a good indication of when a show might do better in a different timeslot. I remember wondering why ABC didn’t try to move 666 Park Ave. to a different night, based on the DVR numbers. The live numbers were terrible, but it was doubling those in DVR numbers, indicating (to me), that it was likely in a bad timeslot and might have done better somewhere else. Oh well.

    Great for Parenthood!!
