The average viewership increase From DVR Viewing ranks which of the top broadcast shows [by Live+7 viewers] had the largest absolute increase in average viewership by DVR between the Live + Same Day and Live + 7 day ratings measurements.

Definitions:

DVR (Time-shifted) Adults 18-49 Ratings – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data LiveLive+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs.

Live+Same Day(Live+SD) ratings include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing.

Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

DVR Ratings Increase Past Airdate - How many people watched the show on their DVRs within 7 days following the airdate

Until the 2009-2010 season, we used a show's LIVE program rating or viewership as the base upon which the LIVE+7 day DVR viewing was added. Now, the press seems to be standardizing around using LIVE+SAME DAY DVR viewing as the base for the calculations, so that's what we do now as well.

Do the Live+7 ratings tell us anything about a show's renewal prospects we didn't already know from the Live+Same Day ratings?  No.  Click here to learn more.

How come we don’t get a Live+3 chart for broadcast shows again?

  • Chrissy

No Allysa, you are the one who is confused. These are the “largest” gains, so yes people are watching and DVRing Hawaii Five-0. It now airs on Friday where ratings are altogether lower for all shows on all networks BTW. H50 is listed under the largest gains for ratings AND increase in viewers, whereas Blue Bloods is only under largest increase in viewers, not ratings. Where is The Good Wife? It apparently didn’t make either list.

  • Ram510

It makes me sad to see how much OUAT has fallen. It premiered with a 4.0 and now even with DVR factored in it still can’t reach a 4.0

  • eridapo

I know viewers don’t matter, but I’m impressed with all those shows that got over 4 million viewers.

Sleepy Hollow, Shield, Blacklist are monsters. Elementary, Castle, POI, Blacklist, Hostage, and Chicago Fire… So many 10 O’clock shows make the cut on this list that it suggests that it is unfair to compare a show doing a low 2 at ten with one doing the same earlier. The ten O’clock show is probably a stronger show.

  • eridapo

    @Sarah

Per EW. Bones gained only 7/10 of a point in the Demo (to 2.6 from 1.9)… No viewer data provided.

  • Randy

Nick, it wouldn’t matter if we did. Unless we can see the live+3 DVR numbers which only count the viewers who DIDN’T skip the ads ( and only the networks usually get those), the ones where they skip the ads mean nothing; just like these where they skip the ads (+7 days) ALSO MEAN NOTHING.

And according to this site, the numbers of people who don’t skip the ads on DVR viewing is so low it doesn’t help the viewing numbers at all.

  • GLEEK FOREVER

SLEEPY HOLLOW is killing it! YEY!

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

@Sara/eridapo: Bones added 2.253 million viewers from LSD to L7 for a total of 8.996 million (33% increase).

  • Everett

Are these combined or unique views? Like I may watch Big Bang Theory live but get interrupted and watch later, is that counted a one or two?

  • SILVIA AGREN

    Yes,Castle in Top list!!

  • avstylez

great for my favourite shows PoI,Castle and Chicago Fire..!!

  • Ted Craig

LMS always does well in DVR ratings.

  • gagadada

Do you have Glee’s viewership (Live+7)?

  • AllOfHerTw!st

Sleepy Hollow and Elementary are the only ones in the top-10 of all 3 lists.

  • Chris_SAdvisor

L+ will be considered C+ for the sake of brevity (as Live+ and Commercial+ are not always equal).

As Ultima pointed out these (L+7) are about as useful as a handful of air. The only thing they could do, is to indicate that a show could *potentially* have a larger L+3 if the show was moved to a better time slot (less competition from the same genre, better day, better time, etc.). Then the Net in question, would take L+7 as being meaningful.

If there is no commercial money in it, the number means nothing. You time is being sold by the Network to the advertisers. In exchange the Nets promise quality programming to keep you entertained. In exchange, you are ‘expected’ to watch the commercials. DVRs let you skip them, and break this. Most advertisers still pay for L+3 for Prime Time shows, but do not pay for anything beyond that.

If you want L+Infinity, or All Ages to count, then *you* have to push the Nets for a direct payment per episode model, so that advertisers are removed from the equation. Be warned though, the Nets are pretty greedy. Part is due to the fact that they cannot detect good from bad, so they have to average-out their losses (We are Men) with their successes. Part is that they are used to their extravagant lifestyle, with excessive salaries that are somehow not dependent on their performance (e.g. Sanders & Salke at NBC are still making small fortunes after two years of disappointment).

  • EmaPonche

    How about Glee’s viewership?

  • bjssp

Those numbers for The Blacklist were even bigger than originally reported, no?

It looks like NBC has a solid hit on its hands. Now, as I keep saying, the struggle is to get them to watch it live. But still, if it can nurture this, it can definitely be an anchor on a new night next season. Wednesdays is my guess. And yes, it will almost certainly be a contender for the post-Superbowl slot.

  • Judy912

YAY, CASTLE did well on the list. Great considering it was the only returning program on Monday nights at 10 PM. Premiering opposite and highly promoted new original peograms on both NBC & CBS!! WAY TO GO CASTLE!!!

  • caskett 27

Awesome Castle will be here for awhile. They got there fan base and it a great show every season thank too the actors and writers. Stana and Nathan the best chemistry on Tv and the rest of the cast.. keep writing good story line and we will keep watching.
