Once Upon A Time In Wonderland premiered to a 1.7 adults 18-49 rating on Thursday at 8pm, 23% below the premiere of also canceled Last Resort last season, tapping it as certain to be canceled. The cancellation bear will dine on Alice and friends by the end of the season, maybe sooner.

Back In The Game was moved down to "toss up". Trophy Wife and The Neighbors are now both certain to be canceled. These changes will likely make their way to the post headlines over the next few weeks.

Is the bear feeling nervous about his pre-season call that the ABC syndication gods will demand that  Revenge be renewed for a fourth season? Just a bit. Will the syndication gods have the mojo to save the show if its ratings keep sinking? Stay tuned.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

i have a feeling if revenge’s ratings keep dropping to betrayal/lucky 7 levels then i don’t think that even syndication could save it

@Ultima – also, hits were a lot bigger then. The cushion between what is a hit and what is not is very small now. GA doing a 2.7 will likely get it a 10th season, but a 2.0 likely would not, due to cost. When GA went up against CSI, it was doing 9s and 10s in the ratings. It could afford to fall by half and still be a hit. That’s clearly not the case anymore, and there are almost no shows now that could fall by half and live to tell about it. TBBT being the obvious exception.

  • Doug

As a side note, I don’t understand ABC keep putting incompatible shows on after Modern Family. Trophy Wife would be a great pair there.

  • aciel

since the abc average is down even a 1.7 is good on abc

  • Brandy

@DJ, don’t be fooled:a full season order dosent stop some shows from being cancelled at the end of the season.

  • James

Heres what ABC should do next season:

    new drama

    new drama

    new comedy
    new drama

    new drama

    Shark Tank

  • Pat

    My schedule Prediction for ABC:
    7:00 – America’s Funniest Home Videos
    8:00 – Once Upon a Time
    9:00 – Grey’s Anatomy
    10:00 – Revenge
8:00 – Dancing with the Stars
    10:00 – Nashville
    8:00 – Marvel’s Agents of Shield
    9:00 – New Drama
    10:00 – New Drama
    8:00 – The Middle
8:30 – New Comedy or Goldbergs if it doesn’t get cancelled
    9:00 – Modern Family
    9:30 – New Comedy
    10:00 – New Drama
    8:00 – Castle
    9:00 – Scandal
    10:00 – New Drama
    8:00 – Last Man Standing
    8:30 – New Comedy
    9:00 – Shark Tank
    10:00 – 20/20

  • Randy

My idea for ABC next year:

08:00 – Dancing with the Stars
    10:00 – Nashville

    08:00 – Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
    09:00 – New Drama
    10:00 – Castle

    08:00 – The Middle
    08:30 – New Comedy / Suburgatory (Midseason)
    09:00 – Modern Family
09:30 – The Goldbergs / New Comedy (if Goldbergs is canceled)
    10:00 – New Drama

    08:00 – Shark Tank / Wipeout
    09:00 – Grey’s Anatomy (final season)
    10:00 – Scandal

    08:00 – Last Man Standing
08:30 – Back in the Game / New Comedy (if Back in the Game is canceled)
    09:00 – Shark Tank
    10:00 – 20/20

    08:00 – Once Upon a Time
09:00 – Resurrection (if successful) / New Drama
    10:00 – Revenge (final season)

ABC should try that Sunday schedule when Once Upon a Time and Revenge return in March and Resurrection premieres. Resurrection is much more compatible with Once Upon a Time than Revenge, and 10pm is a death sentence for any new show. And ride it out if it goes rocky and give Revenge a final fourth season.

  • Ultima

there are almost no shows now that could fall by half and live to tell about it

Over what period of time? Glee fell by more than 50% from season two to season four and was renewed for two seasons. 2 Broke Girls could potentially fall 50% between seasons one and three and still be renewed next May.

Obviously, no show is going to survive a 50% year-to-year drop, but if you extend it out to three or four seasons, then I’m sure there’s plenty of shows that could fall by half and still get renewed.

  • Ultima

    @fantasy schedulers

What is the obsession with moving Castle? If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.

Why is The Goldbergs on anyone’s schedule (even if conditionally)? If you’re posting after Wednesday, you should already know that the show is going to be canceled.

DWTS to Sundays isn’t happening unless they change the judges. If it did happen, 9-11pm after Once Upon a Time would be the most obvious schedule because it doesn’t involve moving a hit drama and actually works with their movies.

    10:00 – Nashville
09:00 – Resurrection (if successful) / New Drama

It usually doesn’t work like that. You should have done…

XX – Nashville / New Drama (if Resurrection successful)
YY – New Drama / Resurrection (if successful)

When a new show hits, it typically reduces the number of renewals for veteran shows rather than reduce the time allotted to new shows.

Bears vs Giants was the excuse for Wonderland’s 1.7 premiere. There’s no excuse for it’s 1.2. An encore of MARVEL can do better than that there. Moving probably won’t do any good. It looks like Wonderland’s cast is a turn-off.

  • Jeff C

I really wish they hadn’t buried The Neighbors in the graveyard that is Friday night programming. It really is a good show that doesn’t get the respect it deserves. Let’s hope they move it back to Wednesday once Super Fun Night or Back in the Game crashes. (Neither are very good, imo)

  • Alex

I’m not disturbed by the OUATW situation. The showrunner took the smart attitude of plotting out only a 13-episode or so season with a complete storyline, perhaps anticipating a short run. So that means it’ll get to tell its story; by comparison, Last Resort was intended to run longer than the number of episodes it got, so even if ABC pulls it before the complete run airs, we’ll see the whole thing on Blu-ray later.

  • Lin

I think Alice in Wonderland is great…people are not giving it a chance. Some of the shows that have been renewed are not all that great. People are like lemmings…they will watch something just because everyone else does.

  • goodwolfe59

Well, Last Resort was certainly a more coherent story, better acting, better casting and chemistry, and still couldn’t make it in that time slot. That doesn’t bode well for OUaTiW….add in the fact that the sfx/CGI (or whatever you call them)that the show seems so reliant on, are horrendous and they would be better served to forgo the amateurish attempts to create some kind of effects that the show’s budget obviously doesn’t allow.

  • Krystal boomer

I love once upon a time in wonderland this is really disapointing???? I was wondering why it hasn’t been on.

  • baycal
