With most of  CW's Fall premieres now behind us, the early news is grim for Beauty & The Beast. The Cancellation Bear correctly predicted it would be renewed last season, but with a premiere rating of just a 0.3, he's moving it directly to "likely to be canceled" this season.

The non-Monday CW ratings last week were all in a range that suggests all of those shows will be renewed. The bear has rookie's The Originals and The Tomorrow People as "likely to be renewed" until he sees another episode or two's ratings. As always, predictions are liable to change quickly this early in the season.

The CW syndication gods will demand that Hart Of Dixie be renewed for a fourth season. Maybe it'll be a short one like Nikita's, or maybe not. The bear doesn't get into predicting episode orders. Crazy fans, and anti-fans, who'd like to predict in the comments are welcome to.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Based on what’s been going on, I say for midseason, The CW should do this:

    Mondays:
Hart of Dixie(moved to Friday for Season 4)
    Star-Crossed(N)

    Tuesdays:
    The Originals
    Supernatural

    Wednesdays:
    Arrow
    The 100(N)/The Tomorrow People(extended hiatus)

    Thursdays:
    The Vampire Diaries
REIGN or The 100 if REIGN is cancelled after 13 ep.

    Fridays:
The Carrie Diaries/Beauty and the Beast
    Top Model/NIKITA(FS)/Repeats

  • John K.

My take on the CW Midseason Schedule:

    Mondays
    Whose Line/Seed
    The 100

    Tuesdays
    The Originals
    Supernatural

    Wed
    Arrow
    Tomorrow People

    Thursday
    Vampire Diaries
    Reign

    Fridays
    Heart of Dixie
    Star Crossed

    Off the Schedule:
Beauty and the Beast (may return after either of the 2 Midseason shows fail, or in May)
Carrie Diaries (Fall Finale, resume in April if a back 9 is ordered, but I’m doubtful)
    Nikita (Done)

    @Bill

But dont you think not airing the premiere in a major market has long term effects for future episodes of both shows? If casual viewers in big markets are not even sure when its on, then you’re pretty much asking to not even compete in the tri-state

Think about it, last week it didnt air, then the second week some viewers still dont know when it comes on and the third week even more affilates wont air the new episode on Monday.

You say they arent that many pre-empts but BATB went through something like 3 or 4 last season and already have 2 in the first 3 weeks. While no affilatte is gonna say no to Football, over at the exec office fo the CW they had to have known it was stupid to put on a date that clashes with Football.

  • …….:)

They should have just renewed nikita…. Instead of buring it off they should just cancel this. Show already

  • Tom

    @Deedee

I agree with your assessment that BATB fans are overlooking the fact that ratings aren’t the lone factor in choosing which shows to cancel. However, I’ve become totally convinced that very few of these fan understand ratings or even care to consider what the ratings system really means. Some of them still haven’t gained the realization that the Peoples Choice Awards are a sham. Moreover, virtually none of them have bothered to investigate which legitimate non-ratings factors may motivate the CW’s decision making processes. That’s no mean feat considering that any number of knowledgeable posters have made innumerable comments about how and why the CW may be making its programming decisions.

What’s particularly clear from this thread is that too many BATB fans are confusing this site with some sort of fan blog on which they can play endless rounds of Fan Excuse Bingo. Too much of what’s currently happening on the CW is beyond their comprehension and I doubt if that will change.

  • Mitchell

    @BBFan

A 50% gain on 0.3 is still… 0.45. Which is still well below everything else except HOD. Maybe if BATB grew by 500% when in Live+7 it’d have a chance. But what are the odds of that?

    @allfromthei

To be competitive BATB would have to triple it’s ratings. I’m pretty sure a single football pre-emption in one city wouldn’t have made a realistic difference. Maybe it’d be one tenth higher, but it’d still be dead.

  • feinn

Hart of Dixie is too low for renewal, cw canceled veronica mars after 3 seasons. So they can cancel hod

  • BBFan

I was unaware of the Supernatural spin-off until you mentioned it. If they intend to seed it next spring, then they might be ready for a launch late next Fall. It’s hard to believe the bar is rising on the CW & it’s almost all sci-fi/fantasy/horror. With this & Flash in the wings, there is no room for Beast.

At least Beast will face less competition this Mon. Hollow’s pilot airs again, & the NFL features sick dogs. Maybe it can draw 500k 18-49 at least.

  • Brandy

@feinn VM ws cancelled after three seasons back before the minumum syndicatin reqrement w 100 episodes, now it’s 88.Second, Nikita got 0.2-0.4 for the last season and a third of another, yet it was renewed partly for syndication.Thirdly, CW exsist to syndicate as many of its shows as possible and they can’t afford to & won’t walk away from a potential syndication.

  • Adam Decker

Interesting how only one CW show is in danger of being cancelled right now. I’m not counting Nikita, by the way, since it more or less is already. But since this network typically always gets low ratings (has it ever gotten out of fifth place?), I’m not sure if it will be the only show in danger of getting cancelled.

  • BBFan

InDev @CW: Tim Kring HS drama, Flash, comedy Seed, The 100, Oxygen, The Selection, Company Town, Vanishing Act, Monster HS drama, an Army base drama, a Mars colony drama, & the Supernatural spin-off. What happens if this yr’s new shows all continue to find an audience? Do all of these get pushed back or does the bar rise for renewal?

  • Anthony

I’m enjoying The Tomorrow People and The Originals is decent, but not as good as The Vampire Diaries. The only reason The Originals has been good thus far is the violence and of course Klaus. He is the most liable villian and is extremely clever. Hopefully the ratings will improve, but either way I think The CW keeps it. I had a feeling The Tomorrow People was going to be good and it hasn’t disappointed.

  • Valerie

If BATB does significantly better against the Sleepy Hollow rerun next Monday, it would make a good case for switching the BATB and HoD timeslots. Many sci fi/fantasy fans are likely interested in both BATB and Sleepy Hollow, so BATB ratings will likely go up without the Sleepy Hollow competition. There probably isn’t as much overlap between HoD and Sleepy Hollow fans, so HoD ratings would not be as affected by the switch.

  • Brandy

@Feinn also, you must look at HoD in relation to Cws other at the end of the season:Nikita’s units final season,BatB & Carrie Diaries will sadly probably be cancelled (thatll be three shows already gone)and if Reign,The Hundred,Star-Crossed flop out of the gate and /or if at the end of the season Originals /Tommorrow People drop a lot in ratingsHoD will be renewed.HoD is still doing better than BaTB currently.

Hart of Dixie and Beauty and the Beast are the NEW Gossip Girl and 90210.

Atleast 90210 and Gossip Girl has decent numbers in demo and viewers in its first couple seasons before hitting embarrassing numbers. Hart of Dixie and Beauty and the Beast never had anything to brag about in the ratings department.

This is just from a numbers standpoint not insulting the actual shows itself. Can’t wait to see what numbers Carrie pull on its new move to Friday Nights.

The CW should consider a new Monday Lineup this Winter and place Hart of Dixie and Beauty on Fridays.

Maybe a new series at 8 and a NEW Whose Line It Any Way at 9 and a REPEAT at 9:30.. OR Whose Line could be the lead show at a new ep at 8 a repeat at 8:30 and a new series at 9.

  • feinn

@Brandy cw is doing better this season, no new flops yet…if reign or midseason are hits too, hod I’d gone

  • Brandy

@feinn what part of if a show has three full seasons, it’ll get a fourt forth for syndicatin don’t you get?Even Reign or The Hundred or Star-Crossed are hits, HoD will be around. Lookat Nikita-Arrow was a hit last season yet Nikita despite BaTB /HoD like numbers was still renewed for a fourth season for syndication. HoD will still be around next season cause Niita s ending, BATB & CD are very ikley to be cancelled and it’s almost impossible that the four ne w scripted shows plus one reality (I’m not sure when Masterts of Illusion will air) will all be hits.At least two to three of the five new shows will be one. & done. Also, Last season Arrow debuted to a 1.3 & BatB to a 1.2 and this season, so far , the two new show that have premiered at 0.9, not one new show premiered to a 1.0 so no it’s not doing better this season.
Also I forgot to mention about VM that it was in a unique situation of a network merger and not all shows from both could kept and thee was also a behind the scenes disagreement about the direction of season four should it be renewd where one of the studio, network, show runner disagreed with the other about having a 4-5 year time jump with VM being in the FBI.As I said, back then,a show needed100 episodes for syndication (not the 88 needed today)& VM was too far from tat .

  • Sissy

Baseball adds to the low ratings. I don’t like Sleepy Hollow. I love Beauty and the Beast. I hope it makes it and that they complete the Season 2. A lot of shows have dropped in the ratings they can’t take everything off the air. IMO the rating system is antiquated and I don’t think it is accurate.

  • Jen

    Me loves this show! :(
