Fox ordered six extra scripts for Dads last week. That's schedule spackle at best (some episodes may be produced to fill in schedule gaps before spring) or keeping options open at worst (no additional episodes may be produced). Either way, the show is certain to be canceled. The bear apologizes for circling around to Dads so soon, but as you may note, there aren't that many shows in Fox's list for him to talk about!

Extra scripts were ordered for Brooklyn 9-9 as well. Same situation there, but its ratings aren't quite as bad. For that reason, it's just likely to be canceled.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@Igwell – More like Dads is the new Ben & Kate. If Dads was 3 seasons in and close to syndication with horribly low ratings then it will

@HV – Agreed, New Girl and Family Guy will be renewed, FG should be renewed this month, New Girl obviously for syndication and bc its FOX’s highest rated show. If FOX can get a deal for a tenth and final season, Bones will be renewed (hopefully David Boreanaz will sign on) Brooklyn Nine-Nine will get a full season but who knows regarding season 2, The Mindy Project is dead after it airs its full season and so is Dads.

@Aron – A 1.3 even behind a repeat is nothing to be proud of, even for Mindy Project.

@Gords – Unscripted shows aren’t listed on the index because its difficult to determine their renewal compared to other shows. X Factor will return next fall though.

@Busy06 – FOX is in fine shape, Mondays are so much better this season thanks to Sleepy Hollow and even Bones holds up, Wed and Thur are fine and even Fridays are good. Tuesdays are FOX’s only weak spot which is the same as NBC”s Thursdays being that networks weak spot. Blame the comedies.

Fox has less to worry about since they don’t program at 10. And I think the renew cancel index for FOX will be less boring then the Touch/Glee/Cleveland round table we got for 10 weeks last season.

Remember FOX may not renew anything early like Mindy or B99, so the Renew /Cancel Index has Enlisted, Almost Human, Bones, The Following and Surviving Jack to go back and forth with all season.

I find Dads really funny. Yes it has its ups and downs through the episodes but truthfully it has slowly gotten funnier with each episodes. Its just sad that people only watch the first episode and condemn it at that point never watching another episode. I have friends that watched the first episode and said it sucked and that’s it. I finally convinced them to watch the other episodes and guess what they actually really like the show. Also I think Fox will be slow to cancel because this wouldn’t be the first show by Mcfarland to be under appreciated by American viewers. personally I will continue to watch dads as they put out new episodes. Its a nice break from the tiresome dictor or cop dramas…

  • Randy

I don’t understand why they renewed Sleepy Hollow so fast. Sure people might like watching it right now because it’s October, but who knows what is going to happen come November, December, January, etc? They are the mood for a Halloween like show such as Sleepy Hollow which is my point whereas other months, they might just not watch it anymore.

I don’t know, Grimm seems to be doing well. That’s pretty much why SH got made. FOX is trying to capitalize on on NBC’s success with Grimm.

  • Emanuel

F the ratings. B99 has the potential to run a long time and with sindication. One if the best shows to come out in a looooog time. The gave it a horrible lead though. I just can’t get over how good the quality of this show is and the fact that anyone would think of it’s cancelation :/

  • Hooky

I hate Brooklyn 99, but I LOVE Dads.

  • The Nightman Cometh

    FOX is awful.

  • Dan

Here’s something interesting, in its most recent airing Dads got a 1.5, B-99 got a 1.5, New Girl got a 1.8 and Mindy Project got a 1.4. This means that last night Dads wasn’t the weak link in the schedule, Mindy was so FOX wouldn’t pull the show because its the second highest rated show of the night.

My guess is instead of pulling Dads which is what everyone thought, FOX will probably do what they did last year.

Order a full season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and 6 more episodes of Dads totaling 22 and 19 for the season.

  • Dan

@Randy – Even if Sleepy Hollow went down in viewers a little bit, a second season commitment is still worth it for them. Bones may not even be back next year and if The Following gets season 3, it will air in the spring not fall and who knows if Almost Human will succeed. This ensures FOX a returning drama on the schedule.

Plus Sleepy Hollow’s Season 2 couldnt possibly do any worse then The Mob Doctor and it costs a lot less than Terra Nova and who knows it could get a full second season.

  • Adam Decker

Additional scripts mean nothing. Last Resort got additional scripts that were never turned into episodes. Even if more episodes are ordered and made, that doesn’t mean that they will air.

Why are people saying that Dads only got six episodes ordered? I thought that with most fall shows it had thirteen. I could be wrong though. I’m not a Dads hater, but we wouldn’t be losing anything by the show getting cancelled.

  • Anthony

So far no surprises as to what shows will be renewed, which one’s are on the bubble and the shows that will be cancelled. I knew that show Dads was going to be a loser before they even aired it. Brooklyn Nine Nine is actually pretty decent and I thought it was going to suck too. Looks like it’s going to get cancelled along with Dads though unless it gets more viewers. I’m happy to see The Mindy Project is struggling in it’s 2nd Season. That show is horrible! And that Mindy girl is irritating as hell. Hopefully they’re ratings will continue to plummett and FOX will 86 it soon! :D

  • John

I be Brooklyn Nine-Nine will be renewed but Dads will be cancelled. Brooklyn Nine-Nine has stayed more consistent and higher in views than The Mindy Project did last year, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine is totally hilarious! Fox only ordered 6 more scripts for Dads, but an undisclosed number for Brooklyn Nine-Nine. I bet that means that B99 will get a full season and Dads will just be filler for some comedy thats worse.

  • Oliver

Fox has started promoting Bones’ move to Fridays. I’m still surprised they’re actually doing it.

    @Adam Decker

Fox originally ordered 6 episodes of Dads then expanded the order to 13.

  • ASFan

Shows can get cancelled after second seasons. The Mindy project could end up getting cancelled, allowing Brooklyn Nine Nine to take its place. Having Dads as a lead-in isn’t its only problem. It also has to compete with The Voice, NCIS, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. all at once. If B99 moved to after New Girl, it would have a stronger lead-in with less competition.

  • Matthew Chapman

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has not only been picked up for a full season but will also be joining New Girl in the Superbowl slot.

  • Steve

Don’t forget: This is FOX. Fox has a habit of renewing shows past the point of sanity.

American Idol is down 70% from its heyday, but guess what? Fox renewed it.
Married with Children was crap after season 7. Fox renewed it for 11 seasons.
The Simpsons just needs to die. Fox won’t let it because if it does, they would actually have taste.

  • TV God

Bones will get renewed for a full 10th and final season. No worries there. New Girl, I think, will last around 6 to 8 seasons.

  • Tim

I’m excited for the new Monday lineup come November. Almost Human and Sleepy Hollow on the same night, amazing. I hope Almost Human can become another ratings winner for Fox than they’ll have a solid Monday for next season as well.

  • Pat

You’re clearly confused, let me help.

Broadcast television is a business; the goal is to make money.

It should all make sense now.
