Fox ordered six extra scripts for Dads last week. That's schedule spackle at best (some episodes may be produced to fill in schedule gaps before spring) or keeping options open at worst (no additional episodes may be produced). Either way, the show is certain to be canceled. The bear apologizes for circling around to Dads so soon, but as you may note, there aren't that many shows in Fox's list for him to talk about!

Extra scripts were ordered for Brooklyn 9-9 as well. Same situation there, but its ratings aren't quite as bad. For that reason, it's just likely to be canceled.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @Steve

    If you need more specific details…

    American Idol is still very profitable for FOX; it’s their highest rated entertainment program and costs less to produce than new scripted content would.

    The Simpsons is still a huge hit, commanding advertising rates on par with shows like Modern Family and The Voice.

    Married… with Children had excellent numbers for FOX through its tenth season and is still pulling in syndication money.

    Again, this is a business. The networks make renewal decisions based around trying to maximize their profits. They don’t cancel their most profitable shows just because they aren’t the “in” thing or whatever anymore.

    don’t underestimate the power of seth macfarlane… there is no way he will let Dad’s die without a fight. He doesn’t want to be known for a canceled show after only a few episodes. Just look how long the cleveland show lasted with horrible ratings and he used his power to get it on cartoon network when no one wanted it.

    I could easily see the show lasting a season and being done with it to save face.

    @Joey
    He doesn’t want to be known for a canceled show after only a few episodes.

    Seth MacFarlane already has a show that was canceled after a few episodes. What? You mean you don’t know what it is?! I guess he isn’t known for it then. :roll:

    Just like Dads failing won’t change anything. He’ll still be known as the guy who created Family Guy et al.

  • Joey

    Dads just got picked up for a full season.

    Like I said, there is no way that Seth was going to let his show die after a few episodes. At the very least he used family guy as leverage to keep the show on the air, I even think it’s possible he put up some of his own money and took a loss to keep it on the air.

    And no I don’t know any show by Seth MacFarlane that was canceled after he had his family guy success. Before that, no one cares. Once you’re at the top you can’t be seen as a failure.
