The average viewership increase From DVR Viewing ranks which of the top broadcast shows [by Live+7 viewers] had the largest absolute increase in average viewership by DVR between the Live + Same Day and Live + 7 day ratings measurements.

Definitions:

DVR (Time-shifted) Adults 18-49 Ratings – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data LiveLive+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs.

Live+Same Day(Live+SD) ratings include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing.

Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

DVR Ratings Increase Past Airdate - How many people watched the show on their DVRs within 7 days following the airdate

Until the 2009-2010 season, we used a show's LIVE program rating or viewership as the base upon which the LIVE+7 day DVR viewing was added. Now, the press seems to be standardizing around using LIVE+SAME DAY DVR viewing as the base for the calculations, so that's what we do now as well.

Do the Live+7 ratings tell us anything about a show's renewal prospects we didn't already know from the Live+Same Day ratings?  No.  Click here to learn more.

  • Matt

Good for SHIELD and The Blacklist. OK for ONCE and Revenge. Modern Family and Big Bang still monsters! :D

  • Alan

Great for ANTM and The Originals! TVD is a DVR beast

  • EveWren

    I really hope POI makes!

  • Alan

Now Revenge haters can finally shut the f— up.

  • Randy

    Barbie,

For Hawaii Five-0, this actually counts, if you consider the amount of sponsoring they get from product placement ;)

    —————————————————————–

So do you know if CBS gets paid extra for product placement in the show itself? Just wondering. Do those advertisers pay for that? If not, I don’t see how it helps. Anyone know?

  • Toni

@Sara Bibel – Please Sara can you give any DVR numbers on The Neigbors? Thanks.

  • Theoacme

Until a network executive, in sworn testimony in open court, swears that DVR ratings are actually a factor in renewal decisions, this is network Jedi mind trickery (these are the ratings you are looking for, Luke)…

…until then, and until Perry Mason cross-examines him or her, DVR is akin to Worker and Parasite – why watch East German cat and mouse, when the real Korean cat and mouse duo, Itchy and Scratchy, are available? :)

  • Theoacme

@Randy – I remember Subway paid the producers of Chuck money for product placement for at least one season.

If a network owns the show, they get the product placement cash, so that would be a factor – not an overarching one, but even $100k an episode goes a long way in a $3 to $4 million per episode drama.

If a network does not own the show, less of a factor, except that the producing studio may be able to reduce the license fee for the show in part due to product placement dollars received (see: Sony, the most aggressive studio in reducing license fees).

  • DanaK

DVR ratings are definitely Jedi mind tricks when it comes to saving a show, but for something like The Blacklist, adding a lot in Live + 7 may help a network decide whether moving a show to an earlier time would be a good idea.

why are there Live+7 DVR ratings for broadcast but not for cable?

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“why are there Live+7 DVR ratings for broadcast but not for cable?”

There are, but no one sends them to us any longer.

Or anybody else it seems. I don’t know of anywhere online that has them.

  • Wright

Revolution deserves better. Great for TVD and TO.

  • bjssp

TB is really holding its audience overall for NBC. Now it’s just a question of how to get them to watch it live.

  • Networkman

I would move The Blacklist to an earlier timeslot. I think it would fit perfectly on Tuesday @9pm after The Voice. The new comedies that were schedule their could be moved to either Thursday or Sunday. If Sean Saves the World does not pick up, that could move to Sunday so that a new midseason show takes over the Thursday slot. Either way The Blacklist should really be tested at an earlier timeslot come midseason to get more viewers watching live.

It all depends. NBC may be scared to move it this season where it would have to face NCIS:LA. At the moment it only has low rated Hostages and older skewing Castle. But who knows Intelligence may be a hit.

    Thank you

  • smith

…and those DVR ratings are probably a good reason why Brooklyn Nine-Nine got a full first season while Dads and The Mindy Project are still on the bubble. I don’t know how much DVR ratings count for TV executives, but I have to imagine they do look at them.

Interesting seeing the DVR ratings and seeing how some of the shows are on the Bubble Watch.

  • Brandy

Also nice to see Revenge,Once & Top Model

  • AllOfHerTw!st

    Go Elementary!

    Go SLEEPY HOLLOW!

  • Tea

    Very good numbers for Greys

  • Judy912

I am impressed with ‘CASTLE’s numbers considering it’s up against the powerhouse ‘Blacklist’!! I also enjoy ‘Blacklist’ but it’s CASTLE that I watch live and ‘Blacklist’ I catch on OnDemand. Both are great programs, but unfortunately, up against one another. I would be happy if NBC either played ‘Blacklist’ earlier in the evening or on another night. I guess I can’t complain much for at least it’s available OnDemand!! WAY TO GO CASTLE WITH THE GOOD NUMBERS!!
