Along with The Millers and The Crazy Ones, Mom received a full season order last week from CBS.

That means it's likely to be renewed for another season, right? Not at all.

It means one or more of the following things:

  • CBS has to fill 18 hours a week with mostly new entertainment programming through May.
  • CBS has little faith in the other sitcoms waiting on the bench for 2013-14. No word when, or if, they will see the CBS schedule.
  • Mom might be renewed for 2013-14.

Which is it? Stay tuned.

Why isn't Elementary, with its ratings plunge, at least a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation? CBS hasn't canceled a second season drama since 2008 (Shark) and the Cancellation Bear's going to have to see a lot worse ratings for a period of time before guessing they'll do it this season.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @Ryden Joe
    Please be sarcastic…

  • J-Man

    @Dan “CBS hasn’t renewed a midseason drama since The Unit in 2006 and Rules of Engagement in 2007″

    While I realize it was not funny, I don’t think anyone considered “Rules of Engagement” a drama.

  • Dan

    @J-Man – I meant to say CBS hasn’t renewed a midseason drama since The Unit in 2006 and midseason comedy since Rules of Engagement in 2007. By the time I realized that I didn’t put comedy there, it was too late.

  • shogun

    Thank you for not spelling the death of Elementary yet Bill. But yeah, it’s looking like it’s going to go off to the syndication farm next year. Although, given how huge scandal is, thursday at 10 might arguably be a syndication farm slot.

  • JW

    Re: “Shark” cancelled after second season: Also note that “Elementary” is produced by CBS whereas “Shark” (a TCF production) was not. Those economics will give “Elementary” a longer rope than “Shark” had.

  • Barbie

    I like all the smiles next to Hawaii Five-0. If Elementary is safe, too, I might not lose any shows this season!

  • Anna g

    Full season for Mom only means that CBS does not have anything else to put in that slot. The show at 8:30 tanked quickly so Mike and Molly is back but there is nothing to replace Mom.

  • Russell

    Mom is the best new comedy of the TV season and CBS knows it has a winner. The show will build and by its’ second year will be a huge hit. 2 Broke Girls, Mike & Molly, Big Bang Theory, The Millers, and Two & A Half Men will return next season.

    How I Met Your Mother is in its’ last season so the only comedy I could see maybe not making it is The Crazy Ones. The show is not good and doesn’t belong on the CBS schedule.

  • Michael1

    @Anna g

    CBS has a few more comedies slated for mid-season, they just haven’t announced a premiere date yet. I would argue that this is because “Mom” is currently higher rated than all non-CBS comedies except for “Modern Family”, and by that criteria, “Mom” is a ratings success.

  • Dan

    There is really no reason not to give Mom a full season. Its doing OK by CBS’s monday standards and is on par with 2 Broke Girls and Big Bang repeats.

    Why would CBS cancel it now, so they would have a hole in the schedule?

    For shows that get a full seasons but So-so fall ratings, the only ratings that matter are spring.

    CBS clearly has faith in Mom, and they think it will do better by Jan.

    CBS should have never picked up We Are Men, they already took a risk with Single Camera Crazy Ones and Hostages on Mondays.

    The schedule being

    8:00 How I Met Your Mother
    8:30 2 Broke Girls
    9:00 Mike & Molly
    9:30 Mom
    10:00 Hostages

    would have worked fine.

  • mantua

    I think CBS should seriously consider a ‘quality Friday’ concept : Elementary and The Good Wife may struggle in their time slots, but they would make a classy trio with Blue Bloods on Friday next season.

  • ToXiX

    I say the only the new comedy in danger is The Crazy Ones.
    It is not funny in the least bit, and I’m sure it costs more than Mom or The Millers
    Two and a half men will return for a final season next year.

  • Jill

    How can there be so much garbage on one network?

  • Dan S

    IF CBS renews Elementary that means they have lowered their standards. If the show rebounds fine but if it stays mired in the 1’s I find it hard to believe it’ll get a 3rd season. It likely will move to Sun assuming it returns next year.

  • KJ Styles

    People saying The Crazy Ones is in danger are COMPLETELY delusional. It’s a far better show than Mom IMO, and has much better ratings.

    Whether you like The Crazy Ones or not, it’s a lock for renewal whereas Mom will be a bubble show all season long.

    I don’t see Mike & Molly doing any better as a lead in for Mom than Two Broke Girls was, if anything it might be a worse lead in.

    I only see Mom getting renewed under one of the following conditions…

    1) CBS decides to only pick up ONE new comedy pilot for next season to replace HIMYM.
    2) Ashton Kutcher decides not to re-up his contract and 2.5 Men ends.

    Mom is likely to be cancelled IMO, but stranger things have happened.

  • Jo

    I love Mom and think they have the perfect cast.

  • Ultima

    @Toxix
    Two and a half men will return for a final season next year.

    It’s very expensive and in the past week, it had the lowest ratings of any CBS comedy. I think this is it for Two and a Half Men unless they move it and it rebounds significantly.

  • Ultima

    @Dan S
    IF CBS renews Elementary that means they have lowered their standards.

    If CBS needs to free up an hour on their fall schedule and they think (or know) that Elementary will make them more money than say The Good Wife or Blue Bloods, how is that lowering their standards?

    Unless you think absolute ratings are relevant, which would be silly.

  • Ultima

    @KJ Styles
    People saying The Crazy Ones is in danger are COMPLETELY delusional. It’s a far better show than Mom IMO, and has much better ratings.

    If the season ended this week, sure. But these decisions won’t be made for another five or six months and the most recent episode of The Crazy Ones only did one tenth better than the most recent episode of Mom.

  • KJ Styles

    @Ultima- “the most recent episode of The Crazy Ones only did one tenth better than the most recent episode of Mom.”

    Be that as it may, that will have to become a trend (as well as Mom eventually doing better than Crazy Ones) for Mom to survive.
