Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from September 16-October 20, 2013):

Along with The Millers and The Crazy Ones, Mom received a full season order last week from CBS.

That means it's likely to be renewed for another season, right? Not at all.

It means one or more of the following things:

  • CBS has to fill 18 hours a week with mostly new entertainment programming through May.
  • CBS has little faith in the other sitcoms waiting on the bench for 2013-14. No word when, or if, they will see the CBS schedule.
  • Mom might be renewed for 2013-14.

Which is it? Stay tuned.

Why isn't Elementary, with its ratings plunge, at least a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation? CBS hasn't canceled a second season drama since 2008 (Shark) and the cancellation bear's going to have to see a lot worse ratings for a period of time before guessing they'll do it this season.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Due to this year’s TV line-up, I turn off TV more often. That’s a good thing.

CBS really has to move NCIS:LA next season(2014-15) It is still popular and should be used to help build another night. And moved away from The Voice it may be able to increase back to the higher 2?s in the demo. Also it is time for a new show to launch behind NCIS to help try and create another hit.

CBS has to know that a lot of their dramas are aging and nearing the end of their run. They have to consider that within the next 4 years most of the dramas on their schedule would be gone. So they have to move popular dramas to another nights to try and create new hits.

Possible ending years for CBS dramas
    -The Good Wife(5 years)
    -The Mentalist(6 years)
    -CSI(15 years)
    -Criminal Minds(10 years)
    -Hawaii Five-0(6 years)
    -Elementary(4 years)
    -Blue Bloods(7 years)
    -NCIS(14 years)
    -NCIS:LA(8 years)

@KJ Styles “Even Two & A Half Men is higher rated than Mom though. I think Mom will have to leapfrog it to get renewed, either that or if Kutcher decides not to return. If that happens then 2.5 Men will end and Mom has a shot. CBSViewer had a good scenario.”

NOT SO FAST! Remember: CBS retooled its lineup two weeks ago in order to try and get a jump out of 2 Broke Girls and Mom.

    October 20: Mom 2.3
    October 17: TaHM 2.1
(raw viewership was fairly close too, 7.28M vs. 8.59M)

The week before that, it wasn’t as close
    October 13: Mom 1.9
    October 10: TaHM: 2.3.

However, do keep in mind that they had just retooled the lineup. Even if TAHM pulls another 2.3, it will only tie what Mom did last week.

People are fleeing in droves from the sinking ship that is TaHM. Mom is in its first season, TaHM is in its 11th season and Ashton and Jon are commanding a combined total of $45 million per year for that crap. If TaHM pulls another low number like that, or falls below 2, you can almost be guaranteed that it will be pulled or relegated to Monday.

    -Blue Bloods(7 years)
    -NCIS(14 years)
    -NCIS:LA(8 years)

Do you really think CBS will end both NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles the same year ?
Plus Blue Bloods won’t last longer than Hawaii Five-0. I think it will be canceled next season.

    Please keep CSI

I’m not the least bit surprised that Hostages is doing horribly and will definitely be bear chow soon. I was surprised to read the other day that Hawaii Five-O was a Toss Up? No way CBS will cancel this show. I’m bummed out to see Elementary’s numbers declining though :/ I really hope they don’t cancel this great show. It’s obvious CBS is the Big Dog When it comes to tv shows, but with shows like How I Met Your Mother ending after this season and The Mentalist and The Good Wife being Toss Up’s, I would be really surprised to see them cancel Hawaii Five-O and Elementary. They’re still doing pretty well. It’s not like their numbers are really low. If they cancel one or both, I’ll be pissed!

  • DJR

“Mom” is one of the best new comedies of the season…I can understand that its humour won’t please everyone, but its easily one of the best new shows…so here’s hoping it finds its place. Just like “Dads.”

  • James

How are the Good Wife and the Mentalist at 3 smiles still? Does the Cancellation Bear not find them tasty? Shouldn’t they be at 2 or 1 given their ratings and they are already in syndication?

  • Adam Decker

A lot of people don’t like Mom, but I don’t. I think that the show is dumb and has too many immoral people that we shouldn’t care about anyways. But I can always watch something else at that time and don’t care if it wastes time in the schedule or not.

  • CBSviewer

I think CBS should announce this season of Two and a Half Men as the “Final season”. I would be shock to read “Two and a Half Men canceled by CBS after Eleven seasons” in May. CBS should show some respect for this Show and give it the ending it deserves.

  • Vanquished

I really really really hope the goodwife finally gets cancelled. I can’t stand this show. So terrible it’s astonishing it has made it 5 seasons…

Enough is enough CBS, its had cancel-worthy ratings for 4 seasons, time to pull the plug.

  • Jon

I fully expect either Tnt or Usa to pick up bluebloods in syndication. I see no reason for Cbs to let go of this show anytime soon. Its been such a consistent Friday 10pm show.

  • DKD

The real reason Elementary should be considered strong for renewal:

It’s C3 rating is 25% higher than its Live + SD rating. If the chart was based on C3 and not Live + SD, it would be higher than average–and higher up the ranker.

By the same token, “Mom” would rank lower than shown because its C3 is about the same as its Live + SD.

    *Not Jedi mind tricks*

  • Mi

I hope the Mentalist gets one more but right now I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t.

  • Joel

It’s really a shame that Hostages is not getting better ratings, not that I think Nielsen’s ratings are terribly accurate (bad sampling methods, etc.)

The cast is first rate, the premise intriguing, and there are some interesting plot twists starting to develop. Some have criticized some of the earlier episodes as being predictable, but I’m finding that to be less true now.

Ultimately most shows are at least somewhat derivative, but I’d rather watch a show like Hostages that does take some risks rather than the mostly formulaic sitcoms, csi-clone, and ER-clone crap that’s out there. It’s unfortunate that the more original and creative shows don’t find larger audiences; the mindless drones that Nielsen draws their samples from apparently would rather watch the same crap they were watching 10 years ago, just with a different name perhaps: “Crime Drama Big Metro USA”.
