Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from September 16-October 20, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mindy Project :| :| :| 0.73
Dads  0.74
Brooklyn Nine-Nine   0.83
Bob's Burgers renewed 0.97
American Dad final season on Fox 1.00
Bones :) :) :) :) 1.00
New Girl      1.02
Glee renewed 1.03
Family Guy      1.21
The Simpsons renewed 1.40
Sleepy Hollow renewed 1.43

Brooklyn 9-9 got a "back 9" order last week for a complete 22 episode rookie season. More importantly for our discussion, it has been slotted along with after New Girl following the Super Bowl, which will certainly give it at least a one time viewership boost.

Does that mean the show is guaranteed a renewal for a second season?

Not at all. It likely means that Fox hasn't given up on the show, but its current ratings are still below the threshold that would indicate renewal, and recent history with post Super Bowl episode indicates that retaining all those SB viewers is difficult.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Football cant save a horrible show. Its painfully unfunny and the casting is as bad as it gets

“More importantly for our discussion, it has been slotted after New Girl following the Super Bowl, which will certainly give it at least a one time viewership boost.”

Has Fox announced which order they will air the shows after the Super Bowl?

  • Oliver

Fox’s press release: BROOKLYN NINE-NINE will join New Girl in a special one-hour comedy event, airing immediately following the Super Bowl XLVIII on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014.

    It doesn’t look like it.

“Football cant save a horrible show. Its painfully unfunny and the casting is as bad as it gets”
What? Best new show this season. You have a horrible taste, i must say

  • JohnnyRico

I find the show very funny and thinks it is the best new network sitcom. Giving this the post SB shows Fox at least see’s potential. If Raising Hope midseason bombs and if BNN can outpace TMP I think we will see this limp into a 2nd season the way Mindy did last year since it doesn’t look like aside from Sleepy Hollow they are able to come up with any new hits.

  • FowlScat’s Evil Twin

Football can save an incredible show. Its painfully funny and the casting is as good as it gets

  • Jonay

Should FOX pick up a new animated Comedy now if they want to air it in the fall?

  • David Howell

Previous post-SB comedy blocks suggest the established show goes first. That’s what happened with American Dad!, launched out of a post-SB Simpsons.

I’m imagining this will be the same, especially as NG had its slot announced months ago and has hence been presumably been preparing a post-game themed episode.

  • CraveRecords

I wouldn’t be surprised if BNN is moved behind NG later in the season. Super Bowl may be the time that happens.

  • r0ckmypants

@Jonay – “Should FOX pick up a new animated Comedy now if they want to air it in the fall?”

Even if they did, they wouldn’t have enough time to get it produced for fall 2014.

  • Wright

I’m really wanting Bones and New Girl to get renewed. Here’s to hoping Bones can hold its own on Fridays.

  • AlanHalliwell

Didn’t Glee Get 26.68 million viewers and 11.1 demo after superbowl it will have a great affect for New girl but dont know about B99

  • gerry

fox should really consider putting bk99 directly after the superbowl, followed by new girl. new girl has already enjoyed that spot once if i’m not mistaken, and bk99 could really benefit from the football/dude sort of lead in.

and its FUNNY! some funnier than others, but i’m glad fox seems to recognize that and is hoping to make it succeed. if it can hold even some viewers post superbowl, and is stable between now and then, a minor post-superbowl success should be enough to save it.

  • Scandalicious

I am so glad FOX see the potential in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It is the best new comedy this season in my opinion. I am so glad they are going to work to save it. I think it would be eve smarter if they move B99 after New Girl ASAP. I still think that both Mindy and B99 will be renewed. Both have at least been stable though not breakout hits.

  • Jonay

    @ r0ck my pants

Then What will FOX put on Sundays at 9:30 or 8:30?

  • Bill Gorman

‘Has Fox announced which order they will air the shows after the Super Bowl?”

My bad. I just reread the press release and there was no order in it. Am editing the post.

  • Alecia

I saw the first couple of episodes and enjoy them so I hope it improves enough to stand on its own after the superbowl.

  • Dan

Aside from New Girl, this shows that if another comedy is renewed, it will be Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Its likely for Mindy Project to be done if numbers dont improve and Raising Hope is probably in its final season due to syndication. Plus I cant remember when a show landed the post Superbowl slot and was cancelled that season.

B99 has a good shot only because the rest of the new comedies don’t (Surviving Jack, Us & Them, Dads, and Enlisted dont) New Girl will air first then B99.

I’m surprised FOX hasn’t renewed Family Guy yet but they will soon, and they will find some way to bring Bones back for a tenth and final season.

  • Aron

I thought that when a show get the post SB a renewal was guaranteed that’s the logic that was being used a year ago about elementary

  • Scott M

I’m not sure why Mindy is ahead of B99. It has a better lead in and does equivalent if not slightly worse ratings then B99 the past 3 weeks (which doesn’t include the first 2 weeks that B99 was way ahead of Mindy).
