Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from September 16-October 20, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mindy Project :| :| :| 0.73
Dads  0.74
Brooklyn Nine-Nine   0.83
Bob's Burgers renewed 0.97
American Dad final season on Fox 1.00
Bones :) :) :) :) 1.00
New Girl      1.02
Glee renewed 1.03
Family Guy      1.21
The Simpsons renewed 1.40
Sleepy Hollow renewed 1.43

Brooklyn 9-9 got a "back 9" order last week for a complete 22 episode rookie season. More importantly for our discussion, it has been slotted along with after New Girl following the Super Bowl, which will certainly give it at least a one time viewership boost.

Does that mean the show is guaranteed a renewal for a second season?

Not at all. It likely means that Fox hasn't given up on the show, but its current ratings are still below the threshold that would indicate renewal, and recent history with post Super Bowl episode indicates that retaining all those SB viewers is difficult.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I try to go out of my way to watch Super Bowl lead-outs but the Elementary episode was deathly dull.

Something lightweight is definitely the way to go. The Voice was great choice by NBC.

  • Ultima

I thought that when a show get the post SB a renewal was guaranteed

There have been plenty of shows that have been canceled the same season that they aired after the Super Bowl. In fact, the networks started using the timeslot primarily for established hits because they were sick of premiering a show after the Super Bowl only to have it be DOA in its regular timeslot.

    The Mindy Project – Cancelled
    Dads – Cancelled

Brooklyn 99 – RENEWED!! (The Super Bowl Magic will work for a while, just enough to bring it to a 2nd season :)

  • Ultima

The Super Bowl Magic will work for a while

Would you like me to give you the long list of shows that received absolutely no Super Bowl bump for their next airing now or should I wait until your hopes are crushed the first week of February?

  • One

All I have to say is this – failure to watch Brooklyn 9-9 going forward will have grave repercussions upon all who dare attempt to smite it from the face of Fox’s schedule.

    You’ve been warned.

  • Jon

I really honestly believe that b-99 show really isn’t in as much danger as people think it is. Mindy was renewed last year with similar numbers.

  • Jon

Why do people think Mindy as certain cancellation, it’s doing the same numbers it did last year and got renewed?

  • andri

New girl and Mindy project need the ax.Brooklyn 9-9 will survive if it ranks over 6.5 million viewers or 7 mill by the Superbowl.

  • starship

It’s way too early to call for Mindy’s cancellation. Apparently it has very good 18-34 numbers and a high ad-rate. Unless Dads suddenly starts climbing and both Enlisted and Surviving Jack are big hits, I don’t see it going anywhere, even if Brooklyn Nine Nine gets a huge Super Bowl jump (highly unlikely). After all TMP follows New Girl so if that one gets a bump after the Super Bowl, chances are some of those viewers check out Mindy as well.

No show in the past 33 years (I only went back as far as 1980) that has aired a non-pilot episode after the Super Bowl has been canceled. B-99 will be the first, if it gets canceled this season.

  • Dax Jackson

Let’s hope there’s no power outages this year and the post superbowl slot doesn’t get pushed out of primetime like Elementary.

  • Aron

I like these Universial produced comedies their hilarious, like Mindy and Brooklyn both will get renewed Kevin Rielly obviously has a love for NBC stars. There’s more to Mindys ratings that meet the eye

  • Ultima

No show in the past 33 years (I only went back as far as 1980) that has aired a non-pilot episode after the Super Bowl has been canceled.

Only two shows have premiered in the fall and been given the post-Super Bowl timeslot their first season. Sure, both of them (John Laroquette Show and Elementary) were renewed, but that’s a very small sample.

  • Dan

I love the cast of B99. Such a great show!

  • were123

B99 is stable, and this week it rose a tenth (1.6), so… there’s hope.

  • ToXiX

Brooklyn Nine Nine is probably my favorite new comedy of the season. I love every character.
Loving Moms & The Goldbergs as well.
But all my favorite new sitcoms can go if it means Two and a Half Men gets one more season.

  • ToXiX

I hate when people call Mom, Moms, and there I go doing it myself.

  • I.R.E.

B99 will do better than Dads. New Girl needs one more main cast member to make it six and more balanced: A third young woman in both a Jess and CeCe type. The Mindy Project might need two more doctor members to make it teen and get along with each other correctly: a young adult doctor member and a cranky old man doctor for more important reasons. These shows need to fix their own severe problems on their supporting casts before time runs out!

  • THE Cancellation Bear!

This show sucks, and the casting and premise is so friggin stupid! Gave it 4 chances-besides the pilot, barely elicited a guffaw from me,,RRROOOAAARR!

  • David C

I like to watch “every” episode of a show that I enjoy. When a show is put on after the Super Bowl, I miss that episode because (1) I don’t watch the Super Bowl and (2) I can’t DVR the episode since it never starts when it is suppose to. If I miss an episode, I quit watching the series. (I know, there is something wrong with me, but . . . ) I watched Glee up to the Super Bowl, and never saw an episode after that.
