Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from September 16-October 20, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mindy Project :| :| :| 0.73
Dads  0.74
Brooklyn Nine-Nine   0.83
Bob's Burgers renewed 0.97
American Dad final season on Fox 1.00
Bones :) :) :) :) 1.00
New Girl      1.02
Glee renewed 1.03
Family Guy      1.21
The Simpsons renewed 1.40
Sleepy Hollow renewed 1.43

Brooklyn 9-9 got a "back 9" order last week for a complete 22 episode rookie season. More importantly for our discussion, it has been slotted along with after New Girl following the Super Bowl, which will certainly give it at least a one time viewership boost.

Does that mean the show is guaranteed a renewal for a second season?

Not at all. It likely means that Fox hasn't given up on the show, but its current ratings are still below the threshold that would indicate renewal, and recent history with post Super Bowl episode indicates that retaining all those SB viewers is difficult.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I’m not the biggest Comedy fan but BNN is easily the funniest of the new ones this season. It deserves a chance.

  • ScalemailTed

With its ratings going up relative to the other fox comedies, I don’t know if it needs Superbowl to save it

A post SB slot didn’t help Elementary in its regular time.

That’s idiotic….”Dads” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” are the two best new comedies of the season by a long shot…though 9-9 stands WAY above everyone else. How there is not a viewership for it enough to sustain it is ridiculous. Thankfully, it got an order….thank god. As for “Dads,” I understand why some people find it offensive, and those people are the problem with society, as the show is AWESOME.

“Will the Super Bowl save Brooklyn 99 from being cancelled?”

    Short answer – No.

    Long answer – Nnnnnnnnnnnnoooooooooooooooooooooo.

I just read on that “Dads” is getting a full season order yet it has worse numbers than Brooklyn Nine-Nine and it could and most likely will be canceled. I would like to see The Mindy Project which has the worse numbers of ANY show on FOX get the axe more than any show. Although, Dads is really bad!

  • Anthony

Looks like Dads is safe, but Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Mindy Project could be Bear chow! The Mindy Project definitely has to go. I can’t believe it made it to Season 2. Last season they predicted it would be food for the Bear. I hope it was just a preminition and it’s THIS year it gets eaten!

I have to admit, after watching the pilot I had given up on B-99. The other night I was bored and looking for something to watch and decided to give it another shot while browsing hulu and now I am hooked. Really hoping it gets the viewership and future seasons (if they can continue getting better) it deserves.

  • Craig

Brooklyn Nine Nine is the best network comedy to come around since Community…

  • JJ Jones

Brooklyn 9-9 is the best new show on TV. I can’t believe it is even on the chopping block.
