Been watching Days of Our Lives off and on for 20 years – it is definitely better than it has ever been in a very long time!!

  • Mike

I personally am happy with the 4 soaps that are on the air. And I think it is creating healthy ratings for each because of less competition. I watch Y&R and B&B and if I wanted to watch more soaps I would but I don’t have any room in my schedule for anything additional right now.

I personally think that one of the things helping all 4 shows is that there is less competition and it is easier for fans to keep up with them.

With the introduction of AMC and OLTL this past year fans complained that they couldn’t keep up with him airing every day. That plus the other shows they are already watching.

I think it would be better to let the shows fully recover and build up the budgets to make them better than once again bringing shows back and increasing competition again. The time slots that the networks own right now would put any new soap or returning soap into direct competition with another soap opera forcing fans to choose between them.

  • Heather

The thing is that affiliates would have to be willing to give back some of their local timeslots to their respective networks. Given that the trend since the 1970s has been for networks to give away timeslots to their local stations, I doubt this will change anytime soon. I think the networks themselves are actually fond of giving away these daytime slots to their local stations.

Also, soap operas are very expansive to produce and the ratings of the remaining four soaps just don’t justify the need of creating a new soap opera. In the 1970s and 1980s, soap operas were being cancelled for having ratings that were higher than what GH, Days and B&B are getting today.

Good ratings for all the soaps. Just saw GH today and they showed Ilene Kristen as a waitress in the preview for Monday! Hope its not just for a couple of episodes. I just LOVED her as Roxy on OLTL!

  • j

Its good to see all the soaps do well.2014 is when the networks decide to renew or cancel.Nice to see Y&R bounce back from last week.GH is my fav.The V/C regime is very creative.

Talking about networks giving away time slots (like ABC ceding the 3:00 PM hour back to affiliates when “Katie” premiered), there was a rumor that ABC was looking at getting out of daytime entirely. This may have changed now with the improved ratings for “The Chew” and GH. At the time, the rumor was that “The View” and “The Chew” would become syndicated and GH would either join them as a syndicated drama or canceled.

For those who think this may sound extreme, ABC has already done this exact thing in regards to their Saturday morning schedule. Unlike CBS, NBC and the CW who “time lease” their Saturday morning line-ups (Fox hasn’t programmed Saturday mornings in about 10 years, letting their local affiliates do it). NBC contracts their Saturday mornings out to Sprout, CBS to Litton Entertainment and CW to Saban Brands (the company behind the “Power Rangers” franchise).

Instead of leasing out Saturday mornings, ABC got together with Litton (the same people now behind CBS’s Saturday morning schedule) and decided to syndicate three hours of programming. These programs are only syndicated to ABC stations across the U.S. instead of the traditional syndication model, where any local station – regardless of affiliation – can pick up the program. Nielsen even includes these ABC Saturday morning programs in their listings of syndicated ratings instead of counting them as ABC programs.

I posted it in the thread the other day but will share it here since I don’t think hardly anyone else saw it, but ABC filmed a pilot for yet another talk show in August. This one stars Rev Run and his wife. They filmed it in front of a live audience (one of the audiences for Live with Kelly & Michael).

The site that broke the story did not say whether it was a network show or a syndicated one. But they did hire a new VP in charge of syndicated daytime programs and announced it on Friday.

I feel pretty sure that Katie is gone. Even though the ratings were decent I think the cost was way too much. I personally think if The View lasts Katie will take Barbara Walter’s place. And either this Rev Run show or Monique’s show will most likely be pushed for Katie’s spot.

last to episodes of gh was really good love Robert and anna together I like Julian Jerome cant waite for Jackie zemans return im hoping it will be for awhile this time and lucas comes with her .just saying more Robert anna luke tracy the jeromes mac Felicia . and yesterdays episode with heather lucy and scott was funny and amazing. still don’t like morgan felix or lulu show is boring when there on keep giving us are vets . still missing laura lets get her back to port Charles.

Mike beat me to it, but ABC named a new head of daytime Friday (officially, executive vice-president for daytime and syndicated programming). Lisa Hackner was named to the post by ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee. Hackner will report to Lee, who oversees the network’s primetime series.

Vicki Dummer, whose title is executive vice-president of Times Square Studios (the name of ABC’s syndicated production company) will no longer be overseeing the daytime division, which she took over in 2012 from Brian Frons. Dummer, however, will remain in her position at ABC.

  • Lisa

The whining about the headline should inspire a new bingo square: “My show got cancelled because TVBTN didn’t mention it in enough headlines.” Seriously, people, some things just plain don’t matter, and acting as if they do is really foolish.

Seems like more people are watching soaps more than ever! Whether via live or Dvr TiVo or online streams it’s a workin!

A lot has been going in in Days! It makes sense people are tuning in. It does seem like a bunch of people are at a crossroads and about to hit tragedy or somewhat of a departure.

It’s going to suck to see Chad leave and his storyline is wrapping up way too fast for even soap standards which is very in predictable. But when Stefano comes back after attending his out of town surgery will the news be Chad survived surgery or didn’t… Or it may just be predictable ending where he tells everyone his surgery out if town will be a permanent stay.

JJ /Dan/Jen/Theresa all is messed up between them all and will forever be. Going to be interesting to see what happens when Stefano offers Dan a clean slate will Adam accept and maybe that deal in involves Shane and Kimberly to come back to Salem to save their train wreck daughter Theresa. JJ should start working for Eric at the church. With his wrong dude if the tracks in life he needs the man upstairs.

Sami/EJ will have happier moments during thanksgiving and Christmas but something big is going to mess them up proving again Sami’s choice of marriage and living in the diners mansion is one of biggest mistakes of her life. But without that there would be no interesting storyline for her. I love the feud she has with Lucas right now. Just like old times.

Eric/Kristen/Brady can’t wait for this scandal to be exposed! Marlena is a modern day Sherlock Holmes and will solve this. She had been through crazier things than this. She was once possesed by that the devil! Haha. No one is rooting for Brady and Kristen but Brady. Even Kristen doesn’t want it. She wants to flee Salem so bad but has to play nice in disguise making her barf inside. Eric ‘a reaction when he finally realizes it was her that date raped him and filmed it as revenge to Marlena is going to be a must watch! Eric’s mental re toons are already freaky enough! Then he realizes it’s Kristen, the last who has been helping him in church, the best expose in Salem history! I hope John is there to notice. And Brady is going to have a scary breakdown. Very Scary!

Nicole/Eric could finally kiss by tears end after he owes his apology for accusing her for what she did but them again she’ll be Brady’s Oprah again after his upcoming Kristen breakdown to happen again. Nicole should take that reporter gig but I think she might postpone or dramatically decline it just to Oprah Brady and live in that trapped triangle between her, Eric & Brady

Nick is going to go to jail again. I think he’s going to kidnap Gaby and the baby and go crazy and Justin Hope will try to fix it but it’s all too late he has an obsessive compulsive problem and belongs in an insane asylum.

Gaby will survive but will have a live triangle between her Cameron and Abby but the latter 2 have more history and Gaby is just apart of the back burner caused by Sonny and is just too much baggage for him. But then again who isn’t baggage on soap operas.

It’s going to be amazing to see Will played by an older guy come back all buff and older from his week long writing Berkeley trip from Cali. That’s a whole lot of man for still young looking Sonny. Wow who knew in a week in California you’d look 5 years older. But a week off the show is more like 3 weeks of episodes. Who by the time Will comes back his baby daughter will be in junior high.

The actor who plays Cameron is leaving – big mistake. Hems model looking and another why B&B does good, is because they have mostly hot men off the runway on the show. It’s still an un finished story with his character. I hope he gets re sated and not written off.

DAYS BRING BACK SHAWN & BELL!!! their kid is grown up a bit and it would not I my help the long dried out marriages of Marlena & John but Hope & Bo too. And yes BO NEDDS TO COME BACK! Hope is a strong woman not to sign those divorce papers. Only guy she had besides bo in the past 10 years was Patrick, and he was crazy!

Bring back Billie her daughter and Stephanie. Kayla is lonely and would live the company and Billie’s daughter and Stephanie would be good love interests for any young make casts.

The show is getting good and a good clean off of storyline wrap ups just in time for November sweeps to start anew in the days of our lives….

What happened to the three posts by Benz?

Good news for all 4 remaining soaps. Recently watched Entertainment Tonight which was focusing on the daytime talk shows. Then it stated that the daytime soap genre had been losing viewers for some time. What it failed to mention was that television as a whole has been losing viewers for some time now. Remember the numbers that Dallas got for the who shot J.R. episode, those numbers will never be reached again. In fact the highest rated TV show NCIS, does not reach the numbers that the highest rated show say, 5 years ago got. The specialty channels and cable channels are happy because they are the ones attracting the viewers. Like AMC, and Discovery Channel. The Oprah Network was struggling but now is improving. AMC with the Walking Dead is happy with the ratings it gets, but not as big a number as the USA networks get. The Walking Dead is a huge hit for AMC. Discovery Channel gets higher ratings during Shark Week. I can go on with other examples. My point is that Television as a whole is now facing competition from various other sources and for Entertainment Tonight to state that Daytime soaps have been losing viewers, should have stated that Television has been losing viewers. Bet you Entertainment Tonight is not getting the numbers it got 2 years ago. And by the way it should be CBS Entertainment Tonight because how high the priority it is for them to promote CBS programming. NCIS, The Good Wife, etc..it focuses heavily on CBS programming. I just hated that comment that they made, especially when ratings for the soaps have improved from last year alone.

Everybody always uses the excuse that TV has lost viewership and bring up old ratings like the Who Shot JR episode. No TV show will get that type of viewership simply because of one thing….more competition. There wasn’t hundreds of channels and streaming choices available to the average viewer back then so you had less to choose from.

When you look at TV as a whole no TV viewership is not down. People are still watching. They are just spread out over a wide variety of programming and only certain programs now rise above the average viewership. What makes a show a success now is way different than what made one a success five, ten or fifteen years ago.

Even during the day when you look at viewership as a whole across cable and all you will find there are still people watching TV during the day and I am talking about LIVE. They are just not choosing to watch soaps. Even at times Fox News has beat the soaps during the day or tied them or got close. Some of the HGTV and Food Network shows do well during the day.

Viewers just have so much more to choose from now.

The thing that hurts soaps more than anything is they still cost so much to produce. And they don’t pull the ratings they need to pay for them. Thus why none of the cable networks have branched out to do soaps during the day or jumped at the opportunity to buy AMC and OLTL even with all the hype.

The producers behind some of the web soaps have tried to sell them to cable and will get close but then the deals fall through.

If you think TV viewership is down just take sometimes and add up the Live viewer ratings for a time period (just of the ones published) and look at how many people that we just know of who were watching TV during that hour. It will surprise you. And there is no way of knowing how many are watching something on Netflix, Hulu, etc or something on their DVR at that time.

The only reason people’s post get deleted around here is when they try to post as at least 2 different people. When the people find out about it here they delete the posts. They put up with a lot around here but they will not put up with that.

  • jonboy

I asked a few young people (late teens, early 20s) at work if they watched soaps. The response I got was they found them unrealistic and predictable. Hmmmmmm.

  • Mike

That reminds of the young actress who played Melanie on Days when she was asked if she watched Days or her friends did. She said she didn’t know anybody her age that watched them anymore.

  • jonboy

Teens on soaps are so “white washed” compared to real life teens of today. Not surprising that they can’t relate and, thereby, not watch. GH is hitting that demo because, let’s face it, its a cartoon. A good cartoon, but a cartoon none the less.

  • lizziemarie

love the nod to ryan’s hope on gh,loved that the door’s looked almost the same but did not see the ryan’ sign and would love to here what the other people of ryan’s faired, but still happy. p, s. like olivia big crush on robert.
