While the Cancellation Bear made the prediction change earlier in the season, it's worth noting that Trophy Wife is now certain to be canceled. It's ABC's lowest rated non-Friday sitcom by a fair margin. The bear would guess that Suburgatory will replace it at some point, but when, the bear can't guess.

Those paying attention to the chart will note that Back In The Game has been moved back down to a "toss up". It's looking like it will be in a battle for survival with The Goldbergs (one that will possibly include Super Fun Night as well).

As always, early in the season, predictions change rapidly. Stay tuned.

The bear's getting increasingly nervous about Revenge being rescued by the syndication gods with its continuing ratings slide, but he's sticking with the gods. At least for now.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014

  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    I have a question.
I usually assume retention isn’t relevant to overall renewal chances, but I am wondering if a show like Betrayal had managed to retain 100% of it’s lead in each week, would it even have a chance at renewal?

(Note: Never seen Betrayal, really don’t care if it is renewed, just used as an example)

  • AdamP

I predict Mixology to replace Super Fun Night, Suburgatory to replace Trophy Wife (sadly), Back in the Game and The Goldbergs to get back nine orders.
If one of these was to move on to a second season, as much as I love The Goldbergs it would seem to be Back in the Game.

  • Ultima

    @jonay
    could air repeats

But those repeats probably aren’t going to outperform originals of the shows that they’re replacing.

Networks typically don’t air repeats when they have originals in the can during sweeps and they won’t cancel shows when they’re still going to be on the air for another month.

  • Shepherd

Revenge will not tie or beat Nashville’s index score for the rest of the season. How low it will fall in relation remains to be seen.

  • Doug

Poor Revenge. And they’ve successfully restructured the show, too! I almost dropped out last season, but it’s been a fun ride so far this season.

ABC should move some things around. Revenge to Tuesdays at 10pm or Thursdays at 8, Wonderland to Sundays at 9, and Trophy Wife to Wednesdays at 9:30. Can’t really do much worse than any of them are doing now.

  • Scandalicious

I am so sad about Trophy Wife. It really is the funniest new comedy on ABC. I wish they would put it after Modern Family to save it but the ratings have sunk so low it just doesn’t seem viable. I would love to see Back in the Game canceled and it would hurt to see Super Fun Night go as well. The Goldbegs is good, but not as good as Trophy Wife! I am getting nervous for Revenge! It needs to stop sinking. I hope Nashville hangs in there as well. I am glad that Modern Family and Scandal remain the top dogs!

  • eridapo

Glad Castle is certain to be renewed because right now it is such a steady performer for ABC. No matter if it is a fan love episode or a hated one (as was the case last night) the show’s ratings stay around a 2.0 and 10.5 Million viewers…

  • THE OLD MAN

May the gods frown on Revenge!

And may Revenge continue to slide into the bear’s jaws!!

  • FallerWanderer

My famliy will be so mad if they cancelled The Middle!

@Avery , please, a little bit of sense in your head

Trophy Wife is a GREAT show. It’s too bad it couldn’t have been put on Wednesdays. I feel like the title doesn’t match the show either. You wouldn’t think about it being a heartwarming show about a quirky family based on that name.

  • Chris

Wondering why Last Man Standing is a toss up when it’s in it’s third season and one more season would put it at syndication numbers?

  • Dave

Sad that Trophy Wife is going to get cancelled, for me its the best of all the new comedy shows this season, i have given the Goldbergs, Brooklyn Nine Nine, The Millers, The Crazy Ones, Back In The Game and The Michael J. Fox Show a go and Trophy Wife is the best of the bunch, i would have loved to have seen it air after Modern Family, the two shows would have synced up so well.

  • Bitter Go On Fan (Former Bitter Ringer Fan)

The neighbors is so done. I’ll enjoy every episode i have left.
I hope SFN keeps falling, it does not deserve that lead in.

  • James

How The Goldbergs and Trophy Wife perform tonight without Agents of SHIELD will be crucial. I don’t think they will make it though.

  • Fake Me Out

I think this sums up most of the problems MAoS is having …

Why S.H.I.E.L.D. Is This Season’s Biggest Disappointment
    tvguide.com/News/Why-SHIELD-Is-This-Seasons-Biggest-Disappointment-1072622.aspx

There’s still time to correct course and I hope they do turn things around … but those who say the show has stabilized may be surprised if it turns out it’s just plateaued for a while before it begins to sink further.

Which raises an interesting (I think) question … we time jump to 2014.May without knowing what’s happened between then and now … what are the surprise cancellations & renewals given the early numbers? Despite early soft ratings, I’d still say MAoS not seeing another season would be a surprise.

How I wish BOP was not cancelled compared to ABC’s current offering. I read that it may be uncancelled.

  • TVDude

I think Last Man Standing tilts more toward renewal than it does cancellation. ABC is still having a hard time with its other comedy time slots and anything other than Modern Family or The Middle will be a disaster in Last Man Standing’s current slot (and MF & The Middle are staying put). The show’s multi-cam which makes it cheaper to produce and will probably do alright in syndication with Tim Allen being in it. For that reason, I think it’ll be back unless it collapses between now and the end of the season.

How many episodes does it have this season anyway? The first season was 24, the last season was 18. If it gets another 18 or more this season, that will put it fairly close to syndication anyway.

  • Celoriu

This has probably been discussed already, but why doesn’t the third season rule apply to Last Man Standing? It was cut to 18 episodes last year, but it had 24 in the first season, so I’d say it’s still on track for a syndication-ready number should it last ’til next year.

Not that I watch it or anything, just curious.
