Hostages is a "limited series" because it has a limited number of episodes (<22) per season. What that means to the Cancellation Bear is that if the series has good ratings it will be renewed next season (like, Sleepy Hollow), and if it has bad ratings (like, Hostages) it won't return, and CBS PR will spin it as "Hey, it was just a limited series".

Since the show is obviously doomed and destined for #bearchow, a more interesting question is whether it will air all its ordered episodes at its original timeslot, or whether it will be moved somewhere else in the calendar (or online). With so little experience with broadcast "limited series" the bear won't hazard a guess, he'll wait and see.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I think there’s a possibility that they move the Intelligence premiere up to as early as 13 January

If CBS airs the 9 remaining episodes in a row, the season/series Finale will be on December 30. So CBS could premiere Intelligence on January 13 or January 20 (After all rhey need time to promote the Premiere).

  • Max Vrany

January premiere for Intelligence gets it better promotion from the NFL playoffs. Though we all know how much that will do for it.

  • M

Hostages has a 15 episode order not 8

  • Mon

CBS should just run Hostages remaining episodes in a row and have Intelligence premiere in January. It makes a lot more sense than wasting 5 more weeks of comedy block lead-in to Hostages. Better use it to support Intelligence.

I love Mom, crossing my fingers for a renewal! Haven’t given up yet.
The Millers is lucky to have TBBT lead in.

  • TVDude

CBS is interesting this year with its comedies. It will be fun to see what ultimately happens on Monday nights. M&M at 9pm is an interesting choice, it’ll either become the next big thing or fall flat and take Mom with it.

  • Scandalicious

Though Hostages is doomed to be canceled I think it will air all of its episodes on Mondays at 10. Lake so many past seasons, CBS finds themselves in a position where they have to cancel a few shows that would be renewals on other networks. I like both The Mentalist and The Good Wife but I hope TGW wins in the end and is renewed for a final season. I am thinking The Mentalist and H5O will be canned by the end of the season with TGW getting a final season.

On the comedy side, I really wish CBS would flip The Millers and The Crazy Ones. I think TCO is a much better show that has the potential to do really, really well after The Big Bang Theory.

  • Bad Wolf

The Good Wife has taken a slight advantage over The Mentalist. I don’t know if it will hold or if it will count for something, but it’s still a positive. Go Alicia !

None of CBS’ cancellations last year would have been renewed on any other major network.

  • One

At this stage, my uneducated guess is that CBS is gonna see Hostages thru on Mondays, or at least not move it until the other side of November sweeps. There may be a penalty or something, and I’m guessing CBS lo-balled the slot to advertisers so they wouldn’t lose as much money. Probably less hassle to leave things intact until Intelligence is ready.

  • iSayso

Meh. I’m watching Hostages but don’t really give a crap. I can’t see how they expected this singular story to span multiple seasons. One and out is just fine. Next!

If Rules of Engagement were on NBC then it would have been renewed.

  • Anthony

If Rules of Engagement were on NBC then it would have been renewed.
While yes it’s ratings would have got it renewed on NBC, I don’t think ratings were ultimately the reason it was cancelled. If I remember correctly, part of the reason the show wasn’t renewed was do to the fact that none of the cast were signed on for the next season, and as a 7 season old show, already with 100 episodes in the can, it would have been too costly/difficult to sign the cast and renew the show.

  • Ultima

    @Oliver
If Rules of Engagement were on NBC then it would have been renewed.

Very doubtful. With 100 episodes, Sony has no incentive to cut the licensing costs and with the cast contracts up, NBC would likely be eating all of the increased costs.

Also, its ratings were inflated by airing between two much higher rated shows. You have to take that into account (just as you have to acknowledge a show like Go On had massively inflated ratings last fall). I think Rules of Engagement might have outperformed Community and possibly Parks & Rec if it were on NBC last season, but would have still been canceled.

  • Christine

The Hostages isn’t a bad show, but I prefer the Blacklist by a long shot. Why not try moving it to a different night just to see if there is any interest before completely giving on it.

  • Ultima

    @Christine

CBS doesn’t have an available timeslot on their schedule and they would have to devote promotional or advertising time better spent elsewhere on it.

  • Olive

The Good Wife is a high quality show – I really don’t understand why its ratings are not higher :(

  • k:Alex

Sorry I was wrong, but still, as long their is nothing to replace it, it will stay on Monday.
Otherwise CBS had change the whole Monday in one time.

  • k:Alex

And I still think The Millers will be canceled, they lose almost half of it’s lead in and are still shrinking.

  • KJ Styles

@Ultima- “I think Rules of Engagement might have outperformed Community and possibly Parks & Rec if it were on NBC last season, but would have still been canceled.”

Parks & Rec was NBC’s highest rated comedy last year (well actually it was the Office but it was in it’s final season). If Rules were on NBC and outperformed Parks, then it would have DEFINITELY been renewed. I’m not a big fan of Rules, but just sayin.
