Hostages is a "limited series" because it has a limited number of episodes (<22) per season. What that means to the Cancellation Bear is that if the series has good ratings it will be renewed next season (like, Sleepy Hollow), and if it has bad ratings (like, Hostages) it won't return, and CBS PR will spin it as "Hey, it was just a limited series".

Since the show is obviously doomed and destined for #bearchow, a more interesting question is whether it will air all its ordered episodes at its original timeslot, or whether it will be moved somewhere else in the calendar (or online). With so little experience with broadcast "limited series" the bear won't hazard a guess, he'll wait and see.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014

  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    Midseason: Mike & Molly

  • Michael1

    @CBSviewer

Has “Mike & Molly” been completely demoted to “spackle”? Will it limp along until it reaches 100 episodes and then be put out to pasture?

  • CBSviewer

    @ Michael1

Has “Mike & Molly” been completely demoted to “spackle”?

No but I think CBS will continue to use it as a midseason replacement for one or two more years. Mike & Molly will probably get 13-15 episodes next season just in case one of CBS’s new Comedy flops.

Will it limp along until it reaches 100 episodes and then be put out to pasture?

Depends on its ratings. I think CBS will keep as long as it’s profitable for them but since it’s a Warner Bros production and can see it getting more than 100 episodes.

Scandal almost, if not, doubles Elementary every week. Elementary gets the same ratings as TGW, and it has much less competition. Plus, it’s more than 2 seasons away from syndication. Therefore, it will probably be cancelled. One of the two, TGW or Mentalist (and maybe both, if CBS is bold enough) will probably be cancelled as well. TGW, Elementary and Mentalist are CBS’s lowest rated dramas. Two of them will most likely be cancelled, or CBS Could just wipe them all out.

POI will be renewed due to syndication purposes, it’s very close.

CSI will be renewed. Final season, maybe? Probably not, but it’s a possibility.

The Miller is probably the most steadiest new show of the season. However, it’s TBBT retention is not so impressive and it depends on TBBT. CBS will probably shift it to 9:00 next season, to give another new comedy the TBBT treatment.

Two and a Half Men will be renewed for a final seaosn, unless it’s ratings improve. Quickly.

    @ Matt

Elementary and Mentalist are CBS’s lowest rated dramas

No. The Mentalist (1.38) and Hostages (1.35) are CBS’s lowest rated dramas.
If you were talking about veterans. The Mentalist (1.38) and The Good Wife (1.42) are the lowest rated dramas on CBS.

  • Bill

Elementary isn’t going anywhere if it stays in the 1.6 and up range. Its owned by CBS and they’ll want syndication . Ditto for POI, which was already sold, no way they move to Sunday yet

  • Greg

They keep promoting Mike and Molly as “the New Mike and Molly”. What has changed? The promos make it look like they are focusing more on Melissa McCarthy. Anyone aware of a change?

I think that Hostages will stay where it is at for its run unless it drops below 1.0.

  • Thunder

My money is on TM being renewed over TGW, although they are are both in dire trouble.
TM is much more popular in overseas markets, and Sony will keep lowering its royalties to CBS as they make good coin from wider distribution. CBS will get the show for next to nothing.
CBS will have to fund TGW from there own pocket, and it tanks everywhere but the US minimising the return.
Both are likely gone, but TM may get one more season if they don’t want to lose two veterans at the same time.

  • SANDY

I love Hostages. Put it on another night because it is against Blacklist & Castle. I also laugh out loun @ MOM!

  • shogun

    @Matt

What chart are you reading? Elementary gets higher ratings than the good wife, and while I agree it’s competition isn’t as bad, it still has scandal and Baseball to deal with. No way TGW gets renewed ahead of it.

  • Adam Decker

I don’t know if this website keeps track of such things, but what are the chances that The Good Wife or The Mentalist are picked up by another network if they get cancelled? I could see that happening for either show, but I don’t know if that would ever happen or not.

  • Adam Decker

@Thunder overseas markets barely mean anything here. If they did, then Without a Trace, Touch, CSI: Miami, and various other shows would still be on the air.

  • Refrain

@ It’s only chance of renewal is if Two & a Half Men gets cancelled or decides to end because Ashton Kutcher doesn’t re-up his deal

Kutcher currently receives $750,000 per episode of 2 and a Half Men too. I don’t think the ratings justify giving him more money. He’s already the highest paid actor on American TV.

  • Refrain

Oh and that’s small compared to what Charlie Sheen was getting when Two and a Half Men became more popular($1-2 million an episode).

  • JOE

    Hostages we know is dead

The Mentalist will be axed even if CBS’ other drama offerings fail…
The Good Wife is safe as nothing is working on this night and the Good Wife at least has critical acclaim and I believe it will clean-up on the awards this time around.
CSI will move to either Friday or Sunday
Elementary will move to another night (possibly Monday or Friday)

Next fall CBS will have a new 10pm show on Monday (or Elementary)
A new 9pm show on Wednesday
A new 10pm show on Thursday
    And probably 2 new comedies.

  • pn

For Hostages to improve in the ratings, they need to have strong story lines to make more people to return to see it every Monday. But it’s in a very competitive and tight slot against rival dramas Castle and Blacklist and it needs to stand out against those other two with strong scripts. It can’t be stuck between 44th, 50th and 55th place all the time!

  • DKD

FWIW, if TVBTN were using C3 ratings and not Live + SD, Elementary would rank above Person of Interest, Mom, and CSI. It’s much safer than it appears.

  • Zach

    @k:alex 15 episodes were ordered

“CBS finally got around to emailing its 30-day viewing message: Overnight Nielsen ratings are pretty irrelevant, and CBS has gotten off to a much better start this season than originally reported.
Actually, what CBS reported: Factoring in 30-day multi-platform playback on DVR, VOD and online, the overall audience for the premiere episode of new Monday drama Hostages – initially reported at a disappointing 7.41 million viewers, based on Nielsen fast nationals issued the next morning — now stands 15.54 million strong. That’s a jump of 110%.
Similarly, the opening audience for Chuck Lorre’s new CBS comedy Mom jumped 72%, from 7.99 million viewers, to 13.77 million. And the crowd for the opening night of David E. Kelley’s new Robin Williams comedy The Crazy Ones now stands at nearly 24 million viewers, after growing 52% over the 30 days. Source: Deadline

Perhaps we have been fooled and the collection of these numbers are not Jedi mind tricks?

  • Barbie

@CBSViewer, you gave Charmed the death slot on Monday. That’s an no no no!!!!!!!!!
