TVD’s ratings have been bouncy so far this season. I think this week will mainly make the network a bit more wary about scheduling original TVD episodes on a holiday in future. They can’t do much about preemptions or competition. Too much of those.

The main eye-roller about some of the TVD fans is the level of Fan Excuse Bingo going on. Yes, the show was aired at a different time slot in one major market this week. Yes, it was Halloween and holidays do bad things to ratings. Yes, we all know that probably was what made the ratings dip so hard. So, what? They still fell. It’s still a series low. This is a site about ratings, so of course we’re going to talk about that.

Fortunately for TVD, most weeks shouldn’t have that kind of double whammy, so it should do well for the rest of the season. Number one all the time? Maybe not. It’s been declining slowly for a while, which is perfectly normal. What’s not normal is that SPN has risen since season seven. That’s the anomaly here, but it doesn’t make TVD any more likely to be canceled.

The post-season six contract renewals could be an issue for a show with such a large cast, but hey, Smallville and One Tree Hill survived them, so TVD could, too.

  • Truth

It’s essentially the Gossip Girl situation. The cast is young and want to move on to greener pastures, namely movies.

    @tuth i don’t care what they want , i want 8 season , i wil not allow

  • thesnowleopard

I don’t quite understand why some TVD fans are so up in arms about SPN beating TVD for the week when it’s done it once this season, already. Perhaps it’s the conjunction of beating TVD *and* TVD finally dropping below a 1.0.

  • Truth

*eyeroll* What exactly do you think you can do? :)

  • methix0r

six season is not enough it can go to 8 season the creators of the show and CW said it will go on as long as nina ian and paul are contracted, so they need to dump lots of money on them after season 6 like they did with tom welling so they stay and get 8 season vampire diaries go for 8 seaosn and the originals goes for at least 6 then im happoy

  • methix0r

btw what happend to the kevin williamson i thought he was incharge of TVD not the julie plec

  • Truth

I think Freyja said it best. TVD fans have a meltdown whenever they’re not #1.

  • methix0r

and ps to the snowleopard , spn has not beaten TVD once before , this week is the first week SPN demo was higher than TVD i checked so they only beat once this season

  • Truth

Kevin Williamson bailed out after season three, presumably to work on The Following. The show has gotten progressively worse under Julie Plec. She simply cannot juggle three shows at once. It’s probably best that TVD ends at season six. TO and TTP will be better off for it.

Nina Dobrev is pretty adamant on wanting to leave after season six. I don’t think a boatload of money from Warner Bros. is going to change her mind, but who knows.

Well, at least Reign’s demo didn’t drop any further. Hopefully it will stabilize now.

I just want to apologize to all the non-CW fans and the mature CW fans here, because it was my original post that created this fiasco. That was not my intention. It was brought on because of the drama that surrounds all the CW shows it seems and I hate that all the fandoms fight with one another when frankly they should be hoping all the shows do well so the network doesn’t collapse altogether.

I guess it’s just that I’ve been told by so many people how much they hate SPN simply because of its fanbase and the fact that SPN fans are posting on here bragging about SPN being #1 this week can be construed as being obnoxious even if it was simple celebration. The SPN fans get upset with TVD or Arrow fans if their fans brag about it too and I just think it would be nice if everyone could show respect to one another. Like I said before, I’m a SPN fan. I’ve never watched even one episode of TVD and I’m thrilled that SPN won the ratings this week for the CW but I also wish TVD well because the network needs it and because I know that the fans of that show have been dreading dropping under a 1.0, so I hope it bounces back. All the hate toward one another ruins the experience for so many people here.

So, anyway, my apologies for my original post. It was meant to be a voice of maturity, not something to piss people off.

@truth i don’t care about TTP , TVD ending will not benefit TO it will hurt it trust me when a main show end before spinoff is never good and it also means no crossover which will give better ratings cause to and tvd are strongly connected character wise i dont care about TTP cause i dont watch it it will be better is TTP gets cancelled and TVD and TO will be better of for it and it looks like that is going to happen before TVD ends if the ratings keep same or they drop.

and everyone stop referring to me as TVD fan especially SPN fans i have SPn box set season 1-8 for christ sake i just like TVd more so back off

  • methix0r

@laina you forget also consecutively for the past 4 years at the end of each season TVD has been the #1 show overall this actually matters more than week 2 week , and if TVD finishes it is gonna hurt CW and cw shows allot. cause it has been its #1 show for the past 4 years and after season 5 if ratings go back to normal this week will have been #1 show for five years

  • Truth

“i don’t care about TTP , TVD ending will not benefit TO it will hurt it trust me when a main show end before spinoff is never good”

Angel, The Game, Law & Order SVU, NCIS, etc…

“and it also means no crossover”

Just because TVD ends doesn’t mean a character can’t resurface on TO. Like you said, they’re strongly connected.

“and everyone stop referring to me as TVD fan especially SPN fans i have SPn box set season 1-8 for christ sake i just like TVd more so back off”

But you’re still a TVD fan, correct? So what’s wrong with that title?

  • allfrumthei

TVD adjusted up but the actual viewers went from 2.11 to 2.07?

  • Laina

I wasn’t forgetting that, I just didn’t specify it. The network needs TVD, TO, SPN, and Arrow to continue to perform well without any doubt. If those shows swap first place in the week-to-week over the course of this season it may be a disappointment for TVD but it’s still a win for the network (unless all four start performing at 0.8 level or below).

  • Laina

Angel only got one season after Buffy ended (and Buffy and Angel weren’t even on the same networks during Buffy’s last 2 seasons). With that said, Angel was still a good show that shouldn’t have been cancelled so soon.

  • Truth

Angel was only cancelled because Joss Whedon demanded an early pick-up, and his power play did not go over well with the network head, Jordan Levin.

If he had kept his mouth shut and waited until May, Angel would’ve been renewed.

  • Lacy

Snowleopard is not wrong. SPN has been the number one cw show (for the week) twice so far this season. This week and the week it premiered. Remember that the TVD and TO started a week ahead of the cw’s other shows.
