Late Friday, while the cancellation bear was sleeping, ABC made a few moves with its rookie sitcoms.

While all the bear's predictions are made for moves by season end, it was a bit surprising that Trophy Wife received a full season order since it's currently the lowest rated of ABC's rookie sitcoms. Nevertheless, the bear's prediction that Trophy Wife is certain to be canceled by the end of the season remains the same.

The fact that Super Fun Night wasn't given a full season, just an order for four more schedule spackling episodes, marks it as certain to be canceled at season's end. Don't expect any more news about it from ABC until it's not on the 2014-15 schedule revealed in May. As always, mum's the word for to be canceled shows.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

As I said in another thread, I don’t know why they expect XX chromosome folks to like Trophy Wife. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t the premise that a man replaces his age-appropriate, intelligent, professional (doctor) wife (see Olivia Goldsmith) for a younger ditz. Then he replaces the ditz with a 20-something party girl. What exactly is modern woman supposed to like here?

  • Dan

Nashville might be a good fit after DWTS Mondays and as an older show, Castle moving to Tuesdays at 10 wouldn’t be too bad.

Those dramas will likely stay put for the remainder of the season but I wouldn’t be too surprised if ABC doesn’t make those moves next season.

  • David Howell

RS: The Batchelor gets an overwhelmingly female crowd despite being similarly sexist, so..

Dan: That might be a good call actually. Castle is building on DWTS and could do with proving it’s the stronger show once and for all with a new slot away from it. Nashville is definitely compatible with DWTS more than the comedies.

  • RS

Thank you, David. I’ve never watched the Bachelor, so I don’t get the referenced, but I do accept that mine own are destroying my point.

  • Other Than THAT Mrs Lincoln? How Was The Play?

Super Fun Night? Never heard of it. I gues that explains alot. LOL!

The icing on the cake was when “Trophy Wife” recast the daughter with a younger actress after a single episode. And she’s supposed to be a twin, but they replaced an actress that closely resembles the boy twin with someone who looks nothing like him.

Finally! Fun Night is done! :D

Back in the Game was canceled? My poor Maggie. I was really loving that show. It was heart warming. :(

  • Dan

@CBS Viewer – I suggested ABC move Nashville to Sundays at 10 but it seems they went with another 666 Park Avenue / Red Widow situation.

That’s a good schedule but moving The Goldbergs behind Last Man Standing might create another The Neighbors situation. I’m not sure if ABC would try 2 new shows on Wed again. Also ABC might go with DWTS results Tues at 9 and they could move Castle to Tuesdays at 10 to try out a new drama Mon at 9. That way Castle can still follow DWTS and ABC can test out a new drama Mon at 10. That slot has only had Castle since it premiered March 2009.

Who knows? I’m just looking forward to the midseason schedule.

@Kim – Yes Back in the Game is cancelled but all episodes will air. 10 episodes will have aired by December 11. I assume ABC will air the remaining 3 January 8, 15, and 22 and by February 5 possibly Suburgatory could return to air in the 8:30 slot for the remainder of the season.

Super Fun Night has additional episodes but its likely dead too. Since ABC wont air the Pilot there are 16 episodes that will air, 9 of which are scheduled to air by December 11. The remaining 7 episodes will probably air January 8, 15, 22, February 5, 12, 19, and 26. If ABC decides to air the pilot, then maybe one more on Jan 29. I would have to assume that Mixology would take over the slot by March 5.

  • Renz

@KJ Styles- Suburgatory would only come back if the changes (removing some fan favorite characters) are for the better and fans are willing to accept and you cannot count on the exact same demo and views returning, just look at “Modern Family” and “The Middle” as their ratings in demo and viewers change each season.
@Ted Craig – Syndication does not matter there are so many shows that have the same close to quota needed for syndication but get the ax. Unless Warner Bros. and ABC like what they see when it returns then I might change my mind on the show, but until then. I say it is there FINAL season (at least on ABC!).

  • Devin

@Ray,that looks alot like the schedule I would prefer as well. I think they could bring the DWTS results show back to Tuesdays at 9 or even Thursdays at 8.I would try Killer Women after Scandel on Thursdays too.

  • Dan

@Renz – In terms of Suburgatory, I don’t think the changes will affect the show’s numbers. If anything the loss of Alan Tudyk and Rex Lee will have the show focus more on the main 2 families of the series. This show seems to have gotten better but keep in mind it would need 2 more full 22 episode seasons after it’s current season to get to syndication. However if it gets renewed for a full fourth season and gets to 79 episodes then maybe a deal could be worked out for a final fifth season. My guess is that when the series inherits the 8:30 slot after Back in the Game finishes in January, it will do better then Back in the Game did and return. Hopefully the series wont have the same budgetary problems this year as they did last.

revenge has the lowest renewal index which is certain to be renewed among big 4 nets

Hope CASTLE can continue to hold onto the ‘five green smilely faces’ all season long! Sure seems it’s holding well against the hottest new drama of the new season, NBC’s mega hit “The Blacklist”! I have to admit both programs are very entertaining!!

  • Fred

OUAT Wonderland is a lot better than the ratings suggest .
ABC really should have aired if on Sunday @ 7:00.
Not saying it would have been been a season 1 OUAT sized hit , but surely better than the awful #s ion Thursday.
OUAT original has been very entertaining as well lately , I would like to see a bump in the ratings .

  • Shane

wish ABC would release it’s Gothica pilot online :(

  • omabin

Why do people keep insisting on ABC moving Castle? Do you realize that DWTS is nowadays a terrible lead-in and that the 10pm slot on Mondays is a terrible slot to launch new shows considering they have to go up against whatever show NBC is propping up with the voice. What do you expect to achieve with that? Castle would surely loose a bit of its viewers (almost every show looses a bit when moved) and a new show would not do better there, so what is the point? People seem to remain dilluded in a world in which DWTS is a good lead-in, so Castle should be moved to the let the lead-in be used elsewhere.

This is probably one of the best pairs there is nowadays on network TV, because it is a show that takes full advantage of its lead-in due to compatibility and still outgrows it. Just let it be!

The only instance in which I would consider moving Castle is if DWTS is moved (as I think it should be, to Sundays). Other than that, it is non sense to move it.

I just want Suburgatory to come back and do awesome!!! PLEASE!!!

  • omabin

I agree, I miss Suburgatory. Love that show, I find it very very underrated.

  • CBSviewer

    @ Dan

moving The Goldbergs behind Last Man Standing might create another The Neighbors situation

I agree but The Goldbergs has very low ratings. If it’s Renewed I think it should move to Friday.
The Godbergs ratings so far: 3.1, 2.2, 1.9, 1.6, 1.7, 1.7 and 1.5 (This ratings are not good at all).
