While the situation with the three remaining CBS rookie sitcoms remains fluid, the recent ratings for Mom put it within the range that indicates likely renewal (believe it or not, such is the state of CBS scripted ratings), and so the Cancellation Bear is moving his current prediction for the show up a notch to "likely to be renewed".

With its recent ratings declines, the bear's moving The Crazy Ones prediction down to "likely to be renewed". No headline for it this week, but perhaps next week.

The one thing the bear's certain of is that there will be more changes to his CBS sitcom predictions as the season moves ahead. Stay tuned.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    Dan’s CBS Rating Analysis

Dramas: CSI, NCIS, Criminal Minds, NCIS LA, Hawaii 5-0, Blue Bloods, Person of Interest, and Elementary will all certainly return next season while The Mentlalist, The Good Wife and Hostages will be canceled. Any talk of any of these series being bubble or 50/50 is nonsense. If any dramas on any network are certain to return or not return that would be CBS’s shows.

Comedies: HIMYM is in its final season and 2 Broke Girls, Mike & Molly and The Big Bang Theory will all return next season. Two and a Half Men may or may not return but its more likely to come back. With the 2 hour comedy block kept and 4 returning comedies that leaves CBS likely to bring back 2 freshman comedies from this season. Those comedies would be Mom and The Millers. Not sure if CBS would bring back a single Camera The Crazy Ones due to it likely being more expensive to produce. We’ll learn more by next year but if I had to bet on 2 of the 3 comedies it would be Mom and The Millers.

  • Ted Craig

Monday’s gap between Mom and the two proceeding shows (2.6 for 2BG and M&M, then down to 2.0 for Mom) seems a bad indicator.

  • joel

It begs the question how much of that is Mom’s lack of retention and how much of that is Hostages’ lack of retention.

  • Markitos

I only ask that TGW is renewed.

  • milo

I’m still skeptical Hawaii 5-0 comes back. I guess the one thing working in its favor is that Mentalist and Good Wife are doing even worse. CBS is probably kicking themselves for moving POI and H50, I don’t know what they were thinking.

That 10pm comedy blocks and putting new shows on Friday usually don’t work?

  • Alex

cbs will renew the big bang theory 2 broke girls and mike and molly for sure. however everything else is up in the air. i can see the millers getting renewed and the crazy ones, mom, and two and a half men being cancelled.

  • Refrain

    @Jeff (Canada)
@Sunday nights next year will be very interesting, especially with The Amazing Race getting lower and lower ratings each season.

TAR is in no danger, it’s ratings have been somewhat stable prior to this season and haven’t fallen low enough to warrant cancelation.

It already has the nod to produce 2 new seasons for next year, with Season 24 being a returning racers edition(All stars), that’s due to go to camera in mid/late November.

  • Rebecca

I love Mom. I doubt it would move from Mondays – CBS has been promoting Mondays as MMM (or M&M, whatever)…for [HIMY]Mother, Mike/Molly and Mom. Can’t remember if they already tried this, but maybe 2BG should go to the post TBBT slot and then put [TAAH]Men back on Mondays to stick with the M theme and retire it there. Oh, and I forgot The Millers (another M, lol)…love that show, too.

  • Kit

NBC lost both Fraiser and Friends the same year and the next year they had nothing. CBS is definitely not going to want to lose HIMYM and TAAHM at the same time. 2.5 will likely get renewed barring the cast wanting to call it quits, and they’ll either prop it up behind the BBT or move it back to Mondays to stabilze ratings. Either way, it won’t get “canceled”, it will end with a proper series finale.

Well, ‘Mom’ went from being likely to be cancelled to likely to be renewed.

Gotta stop trusting you and just wait and see. =)
    ========================================================

It’s more of the fact that Mom started poorly (relatively speaking) and pretty much hasn’t gone anywhere… while all of the other comedies, particularly The Crazy Ones, have plummeted downwards.

    Therefore, the prediction has changed.

  • KJ Styles

If Mom gets renewed then 2.5 Men will either get cancelled or just decide to end on it’s own terms. I’m still not sold on it’s renewal chances though. Last night it did a 2.0, I know that the index was done prior to that, but I see it having middling ratings all season long.

The Millers is a terrible show IMO, but sadly it’s gonna get a second season and we can say goodbye to a 5th season of Arrested Development, which sucks because Will Arnett was the funniest persom on that show.

The Crazy Ones will go back up this week as it won’t have The World Series to compete against, and they’ll be a new Big Bang Theory which means good ratings for all CBS Thursday sitcoms across the board.

The Good Wife will be renewed yet again. If for no other reason, the Mentalist will be cancelled and if they cancel Good Wife they’ll have to move TWO shows to Sundays next season and they don’t want to do that. They certainly don’t want to debut a new show on Sundays opposite Sunday Night Football and The Walking Dead.

  • Bill

I think there will be some sort of announcement in the new year declaring the Mentalist last season. Red John will be wrapped up and it is the lowest rated drama. Ie’d rather they make an announcement of this being the final season then it being cancelled, at least give it a finale for the fans sake.

  • james

guys stop watching the good wife, either it or the mentalist is going to be cancelled and i think we would all rather it be the good wife to be cancelled

  • Dan

@KJ Styles – If Two and a Half Men gets cancelled, which could happen, that just means with The Big Bang Theory, Mike & Molly and 2 Broke Girls returning and CBS possibly premiering 2 new comedies next fall, that means they would renew 3 new comedies from this season.

Two and a Half Men costs a lot and CBS may want to renew it for a final season if it can. That will be interesting. It will be also interesting to see 2 veteran comedies end in the same season. My guess is that Men will be renewed giving CBS 4 veterans slots next fall on the 2 hour comedy block, along with 2 returning freshman comedies. Most likely to be Mom and The Millers if CBS keeps multi camera.

So assuming FWBL and Bad Teacher get axed along with The Crazy Ones. We could see something like this

    Mondays
    8:00 2 Broke Girls
8:30 New Comedy (Maybe HIMYM spinoff)
    9:00 Mike & Molly
    9:30 Mom

    Thursdays
    8:00 The Big Bang Theory
    8:30 New comedy
9:00 Two and a Half Men (Full final season)
    9:30 The Millers

Less new comedies are better and I think even though cost is rising, CBS wil opt for a full 12th Men season for syndication over a third renewed freshman comedy. So we could likely see 2/6 freshman comedies from this season return next fall.

  • Nasir

I hope Mom is renewed. It’s quite funny.

  • ToXiX

I really don’t think Friends With Better Lives or Bad Teacher will be renewed, when’s the last time CBS renewed a midseason comedy? Rules of Engagement?
I still don’t think Bad Teacher will even air.

  • Dan

@Toxix – Its unlikely either will get renewed. It just shows that CBS has too many comedies for midseason. The best case scenario is that CBS will run The Millers and The Crazy Ones repeat free until March, then replace them with FWBL and Bad Teacher by March. This wouldn’t hurt either Millers or Crazy Ones’ chances but more originals of anything means less low rated repeats in general in the slots. Also FWBL seems like it could benefit from The Big Bang Theory lead in and Bad Teacher could succeed The Crazy Ones.

I don’t think CBS would mess with Mondays, given that numbers for Mondays’ comedies will likely go up once Bones/Sleepy Hollow, Voice and DWTS are gone in January. If they had to mess with Mondays then they could send Mom to Thursdays post Big Bang, move 2 Broke Girls and Mike & Molly to 9 and 9:30 and air Friends With Better Lives at 8:30 after HIMYM. But that scenario is very unlikely.

I still don’t know why CBS didn’t give Friend Me a summer burn off or air Partners remaining episodes. They could have paired them together to just air the series.

CBS typically doesnt renew midseason shows because they don’t have the room which is a result of their fall shows being successful. So they would have too many shows.

Even with the 2 hour comedy block returning next season on both nights, If CBS brings back veterans 2 Broke Girls, Big Bang Theory, Mike & Molly, and Two and a Half Men and wants to air 2 new comedies on either night, that means just 2 returning comedies from this season will be renewed. Mom, The Millers and The Crazy Ones are all doing OK but if FWBLs or Bad Teacher doesn’t do better, then CBS could just bring Mom and The Millers and cancel the rest (including The Crazy Ones which is single camera and more expensive)

Dramas are very predictable this season, The Mentalist, The Good Wife, Hostages and probably Intelligence and Reckless will be cancelled. Those 3 dramas encompass 3 slots that I expect CBS will use to premiere 3 new dramas next fall (In order to keep the 2 hour comedy blocks and UB on Fridays) Since Intelligence and Hostages share a Monday 10pm slot they count as 1 timeslot cancellation and Reckless will most likely take over Sundays at 10 if the Mentalist airs repeat free and ends early. That happened in 2012 with NYC 22 taking over for CSI Miami. If CBS wants to air Good Wife repeat free also Jan-April then possibly Unforgettable’s 6 unaired Season 2 episodes could air there.

    So maybe
    Sundays Jan-Mar
    8:00 Amazing Race (Feb-May)
9:00 The Good Wife (12 episodes) Repeat Free
10:00 The Mentalist (12 episodes) Repeat Free

    Sundays April-May
    8:00 Amazing Race (Feb-May)
    9:00 Unforgettable (6 episodes)
    10:00 Reckless (13 episodes)

The only reason I’m certain Intelligence and Reckless will be cancelled is that I doubt Intelligence will do better in the Monday slot than Hostages and even if it only does marginally better, CBS can and will try to do better next season. That’s why no midseason drama has been renewed since The Unit. It would have to be a hit. Same with Reckless, it seems both shows are the Miami Medical, CHAOS, NYC 22, Golden Boy of this season. If one does happen to get renewed then take away 1 drama slot and CBS only premiere 2 new dramas next season.

I’m not so sure if the good wife is goijng to be cancelled. rEcently it has imoproved in the ratings and I think it may be renewed for shorter season.
And yes, The mentalist and Hostages are toast.
