While the situation with the three remaining CBS rookie sitcoms remains fluid, the recent ratings for Mom put it within the range that indicates likely renewal (believe it or not, such is the state of CBS scripted ratings), and so the Cancellation Bear is moving his current prediction for the show up a notch to "likely to be renewed".

With its recent ratings declines, the bear's moving The Crazy Ones prediction down to "likely to be renewed". No headline for it this week, but perhaps next week.

The one thing the bear's certain of is that there will be more changes to his CBS sitcom predictions as the season moves ahead. Stay tuned.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@Kim – CBS certainly could renew all 3 but limited comedy space and the fact that they would want to try out more comedies, shows that they would probably only want to bring back 2/3 fall series.

If Two and a Half Men gets canned (along with HIMYM ending), then CBS has the room for all 3 new comedies should their ratings hold up but more than likely CBS will cancel 1 of them. Its more then likely that Two and a Half Men gets a 12th and final season.

@JOE – Yes but even after We Are Men was axed, The Millers, Mom and Crazy Ones are all at similar ratings levels that you cant single one of them out. Same thing with FOX’s comedies The Mindy Project, Dads and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

@CBS Viewer – I cant see CBS holding Mike & Molly for midseason again. They will have 8 slots and it is still a solid performer. There was no doubt this season that when CBS “benched” it but had it for 22 episodes it would come back in the fall, even CBS knew it would. With more comedies renewed from this season, they wont make that mistake twice.

@Toxix – Best guess is that both midseason dramas will be cancelled along with Hostages, Good Wife and Mentalist. That’s effectively 3 drama slots freed up for fall and my guess is CBS will focus on dramas next season wheras this season their focus was on comedies. As for Bad Teacher, who knows why they picked it up, the schedule was too packed to begin with, but my guess is it will still air. Friend Me probably didnt air because of the suicide of Alan Kirschenbaum. I think its a 13 episode order, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it ended up being rolled back to 8.

But there’s no doubt that Thursdays CBS would predictably want to test another comedy behind TBBT so FWBL will replace The Millers and Bad Teacher will replace The Crazy Ones and those can all run repeat free. I think Two and a Half Men could definitely get a final season, I doubt it or any other show will be midseason (they have made that mistake too often, a lot of networks have this season) CBS probably wouldn’t want to lose 2 veteran comedies in the same seaosn, especially when their new comedies are only performing OK.

My guess is CBS’s fall could look like this in terms of comedies.

    Monday
    8:00 HIMYM spinoff
    8:30 2 Broke Girls
    9:00 Mike & Molly
    9:30 Mom

    Thursday
    8:00 The Big Bang Theory
    8:30 NEW COMEDY
9:00 Two and a Half Men
    9:30 The Millers

4 returning veterans, 2 returning comedies from this season, and 2 new comedies (One of which could be the HIMYM spinoff) along with 1 or 2 midseason comedies.

I don’t see how ‘The Mentalist’ is still at 3 smiles? any reason for this since its bad ratings and past syndication.

  • andri

I covet all shows at an. .83 cancel index and below being cancelled. Criminal minds & Mom need facing the ax.

  • Al

Mom was dead in the water a couple weeks ago, I read…right here.

Should stop making painfully early predictions, you look ridiculous.

  • ron

@michael what are you smoking? Nobody likes The Good Wife? It had an audience of ten million viewers and that is before the dvr watchers are added in. It is the best written and superbly acted dramas on broadcast tv. the next time you want a go at a show, pick a show that won’t make you look like a fool!

  • Chris

I agree with joel on page 1.

Mom will get a 2nd season. the bubble watch is a joke.

  • Mike 1

The Good Wife won’t be canceled yet. It’s is not doing that bad considering it is on Sunday night affected by Football overruns. And it is clearly CBS Pride and Joy, and the only show that is not the typical lame cop procedural.
CBS is not very aggressive in their schedules and they don’t usually cancel or move two hours in the same night. They will cancel one hour from Friday and another one from Sunday , The Mentalist will be gone from Sundays and another show from Friday, h50 or BB. My vote is for H50.

  • Montecore

The only realistic TV show they have ever done regarding an alcoholic was The John Larroqurtte Show. Mom is alright, but there is no way an alcoholic would take a job in a restaraunt serving alcohol. Not unless they wanted to stay sober anway and don’t get me started on cheers! Having 26 years of sobriety I speak from experience.

The true order: (from low to high based on C3)
    Good Wife
    Hostages
    Mentalist
    Blue Bloods
    Hawaii Five-0
    We Are Men
    Mom
    CSI
    Person of Interest
    2 Broke Girls
    Elementary
    Two and a Half Men
    Crazy Ones
    NCIS: LA
    Criminal Minds
    NCIS
    HIMYM
    Millers
    Big Bang

Not enough people are DVRing “Mom” for it to get a good lift in C3. CSI, Person of Interest, and, especially, Elementary, have very strong C3 lifts above Live + SD.

OMG! So happy Mom is likely to be renewed! I love this show and I was really sad that CBS, besides about to cancel The Mentalist would cancel Mom! Hope it’s certain! ?
