The commenter whines piling up over the methods of our Bubble Watch are many, and varied. The Cancellation Bear's not one to argue with boldness, but he is a creature of habit, network habit.

Let's look at the dramas that aired during the Fall that the CW has canceled in recent seasons:

Given that history, the bear is reluctant to predict that more than two Fall airing dramas will be canceled by the CW. Given that their current ratings are so much lower than the rest of the line up, those two right now are clearly The Carrie Diaries and Beauty & The Beast. That could change. Stay tuned.

Might the CW cancel more shows that are on the air right now? Anything's possible, but the bear's unlikely to predict it.

With three seasons complete, the CW syndication gods will demand that Hart Of Dixie be renewed for a fourth season. Maybe it'll be a short one like Nikita's, or maybe not. The bear doesn't get into predicting episode orders.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I watch the Top 5 shows… Hopefully TTP can rise!!

  • Scandalicious

At this point in the game I think there is room for both The Tomorrow People and Reign to be renewed along with the other well performing shows. However, if the 100 is a hit this midseason , I feel like it has a reasonable chance, I think the CW would cancel three dramas and either Reign or The Tomorrow People would bite the dust. I feel like the playing field is pretty equal this year with the middle to wear performers doing relatively the same (TCD, BatB, HOD and Reign, TTP) and the stronger players doing pretty close as well (TO, TVD, SPN, Arrow).

  • Rachel

I wonder which of Star-Crossed and the 100 the network will give priority. The 100 looks like a better show based on previews but Star-Crossed has more actors the CW audience is familiar with.

  • Shepherd

VD, Super, Arrow, TO, TTP all renewed.

HOD will receive a shortened final season.

Reign will get full season order; still on the bubble for S.2.

TCD and BaTB will both get yanked from their regular schedules. There’s still a small chance that one manages a burn off schedule or has episodes used as spackle.

  • Tom

The CW doesn’t appear overly committed to ratings. Moreover, the CW seems to be operating on a tighter budget than the major networks. My understanding is that BATB is relatively inexpensive to produce and that season 2 of the program has already been sold overseas. So, notwithstanding BATB’s declining ratings, I still have to assume that the CW will continue to produce BATB at least through the end of this season.

  • Ste

    BATB must be renewed!!!Understand nothing!!!

  • hammard

    @bob

Pretty much every year recently a “final season” order will be given:
    2013: Nikita
    2012: Gossip Girl
    2011: One Tree Hill
    2010: Smallville

Next year Hart of Dixie will all but certainly be granted that dubious honour.

  • feinn

Reign in most danger because of budget. CW promoted like new flagship show, they lost millions on this flop. They will never make their money back. When you spend a lot of money you expect results.
On another note, Arrrow is underperforming this year.

  • feinn

CW might not exist soon, another down season for them

  • Timmy G

BATB should have been yanked weeks ago, but if it goes to a .2 in the coming weeks I can’t see all 22 episodes airing. Maybe as summer burn off, and wouldn’t it be better to premiere one of the mid-season shows now opposed to get virtually no viewers? Of course reruns would work too. Surprised to see TTP as likely to be renewed still and not on the bubble.

  • Midnight

Next season the CW will have 5 shows with traditional 22 episode seasons: TVD, Supernatural, the Originals, Arrow, and The Tomorrow People (as long as it doesn’t decline significantly). That takes up 5/10 slots for the entire season. ANTM will air in the fall, meaning 6/10 for the fall and 5/10 for the spring are filled. Hart of Dixie will at least get a partial season, most likely in the fall. That would yield 7/10 and 5/10, or perhaps 7/10 and 6/10 if HoD gets a full final season for Fridays.

Reign, the 100, and Star-Crossed could all be limited series with 13 episode seasons or all could become full 22 episode season shows for 2014-15. The CW has the wiggle room to renew just one for the fall e.g. Reign, just one for the spring e.g. the 100, one each for both the fall and the spring e.g. Reign and the 100 sharing a slot, one for the entire season e.g. the 100 with 22 episodes, etc etc.

Assuming the Tomorrow People and HoD both make it onto the Fall schedule, there is only room for 3 more shows. Since the CW will almost certainly premiere at least 2 shows in the Fall, that means that at most ONE of Reign, The 100, and Star-Crossed will be on the fall schedule. They could timeshare between the shows, but we won’t see two of those three next fall (unless HoD is held for spackle or The Tomorrow People gets a reduced order/is cancelled).

  • Reign Fan

Reign and TTP should be renewed for a 13 episode second season. Allowing for The 100 and Star Crossed to take their places in the spring. It’s a win win for the viewers.

  • Rocco

How can Reign be cancelled if its a 13 episode show, its likely to escape cancellation like the crap that is TCD did and get a season 2.

BATB is really the the only sure thing for cancellation I think. I would have liked HOD to be a goner, but alas it has the syndication gods on its side and for some reason its a very stubborn little pest thats gets constant ratings often. But of course it will likely get a limited 4th season on a Friday.

  • Hi

    I want:

TCD, BATB, TTP, Reign, The100, SC >> Canceled

    But I think will be:

    TCD, BATB, The100 > Canceled
    The others: Renewed.

    :(

  • Tom

I understand that BATB has untenable ratings, at least from the perspective of any major network. However, there was no reason to ever expect that the BATB “reboot” would achieve passable ratings regardless of where it was scheduled. Moreover, the CW simply doesn’t have a program that would perform any better. The 9PM Monday time slot is brutally competitive and the CW certainly isn’t going to debut a new show there. So, that might, in fact, explain why BATB is in the 9 PM Monday slot and likely to remain there.

  • JJA

Is Reign really a 13 episode show?

I hope Reign is a 13 episode show. That would be the best way to present the story.

  • Brandy

Reign &the 100 are limited series.HoD is stable so i think it’ll get a full season for its fourth& final season.T early too say about Reign& TTP though I lean more towards cancellation especially for TTP which drops weekly.CD,BatB are sadly Likley to certain to be cancelled.I thinkBatB,CD will air all thier episodes this season.Reign,TO,CD,HoD,VD,BatB are CWs only good shows(ANTM).Reign,TO are cws best new shows this fall and the best new fall shows on all networks.

  • Wellesley

“On another note, Arrrow is underperforming this year.”

Arrow will sure get a season 3 and inevitably a season 4 due to syndication, even though it never became the number one hit that CW wanted it to be and take over from Vampire Diaries or be the rating beast its predecessor superhero show Smallville was. The CW has got the supernatural and sci fi/superhero genres working for them. Arrow is still doing very decently for CW.

  • feinn

@Tom Arrow or Supernatural repeats on Monday would do better than BatB

  • Guardian Owl

Depends how low Reign goes, if it follows the same trajectory as B&tB, then they should cancel it outright otherwise its going to drop like a rock when it is moved from behind the Vampire Diaries, just like B&tB as they will want to use that slot to launch a new show while Vampire Diaries is still a performing lead-in.

What will be interesting to see is if they bump up Supernatural an hour earlier and try to use it to launch a new show next season since it has been performing so well recently.
