The commenter whines piling up over the methods of our Bubble Watch are many, and varied. The cancellation bear's not one to argue with boldness, but he is a creature of habit, network habit.

Let's look at the dramas that aired during the Fall that the CW has canceled in recent seasons:

  • 2012-13: 90210, Emily Owens
  • 2011-12: Ringer, The Secret Circle
  • 2010-11: Life Unexpected, Hellcats

Given that history, the bear is reluctant to predict that more than two Fall airing dramas will be canceled by the CW. Given that their current ratings are so much lower than the rest of the line up, those two right now are clearly The Carrie Diaries and Beauty & The Beast. That could change. Stay tuned.

Might the CW cancel more shows that are on the air right now? Anything's possible, but the bear's unlikely to predict it.

With three seasons complete, the CW syndication gods will demand that Hart Of Dixie be renewed for a fourth season. Maybe it'll be a short one like Nikita's, or maybe not. The bear doesn't get into predicting episode orders.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I just wish they would try Beauty and the Beast in a Different timeslot to give it a chance to pick up better numbers. Even a move to Fridays would be better than the current situation. The show is so much different this year — far less romance and far more beast mythology and action, that it deserves to find the new audience that would like this changed format.

I don’t know a lot about ratings but shouldn’t the fact that BATB is pulling a .6 with L7 be a good thing?

  • feinn

@Dollface Reign is a flop face facts…A .6 out of a 1.3 TVD for 2nd episode is a huge flop given the huge promotion. Don’t be in denial, CW standards are low but not that low. You have to look at core young girl demos, it is doing bad.

  • Reign Fan

Reignss .6 out of TVDs 1.3 isn’t any different than any other show which has premiered after TVD. It isn’t doing bad it’s doing average. TVD should be moved to the later slot.

  • RyanCanada

it makes me sad about BATB, that show is so well done, and gets no promo what so ever…. needs a better lead in than HOD

  • feinn

    @Reign Fan
Reign is the worst performing show out of TVD from any season. No excuses.

  • Wright

Reign just started. If it holds steady I doubt it will be the worst performer post TVD.

  • Charmed

Supernatural IS NOT ENDING NEXT SEASON. What don’t you understand? It’s neck and neck for highest rated show on the CW, both leads have said they would do it for many more seasons….. What makes you think it’s ending?

  • Brandy

@BBFan Deadline reporters in May The 100 is a limited series just like Reign,Carrie Diaries. I don’t think Arrow will move either .

  • Tom Shaw

“The Cancellation Bear’s not one to argue with boldness, but he is a creature of habit, network habit.”

The network habit of the CW, except for Pedowitz’s initial year, is to launch three new shows each Fall. Which means seven existing shows air next Fall:

Arrow, Supernatural, Originals, Vampire Diaries, & ANTM makes 5.

HoD, depending on your point of view, either counts for 0.5 or 1 more. Personally, I doubt CW thinks it can do much better as opposite-Voice-spackle than HoD and orders 22 episodes, but your mileage may vary.

So what the network habit really says is only 1 to 2 out of Tomorrow People, Reign, Carrie Diaries, Beauty & the Beast, Star Crossed and The 100 get renewed. When the cutoff is as low as one show, there’s no guarantee it is one of the fall options.

As to The CW’s development, the alternative is that The CW has such low margins that they aren’t going to spend more than they have to, and frankly, they just don’t know where things are settling: Reign still has yet to air against a new Glee episode, and The Tomorrow People, skewing old for The CW, may or may not have been suffering an only temporary beating from baseball.

  • Wright

Long live SPN!!! Hopefully it takes over the #1 spot on the renew/cancel index next week. TVD has been extremely boring this season (and I’m a HUGE fan of the show).

@BFan, it’s ridiculous to assume The 100 will be a breakout, especially since half of CWs shows returned lower, and none of thier new shows have done super and Midseason shows tend to not do well and the cw Midseason schedule hasnt been released so you don’t know that the 100 gets the post VD slot(I personally think SC will) and CW is not CBS and justs cause UTD was a breakout hit, that was during summer when ratings expectation are lower/different and The 100 hasn’t premiered yet so you have no idea how it’ll do.I doubt The 100 will knock SPN out #2.CW won’t extend thier Midseason limited series cause they don’t as much money and Pedowitz said CD,Cult would only have 13 pisodes hits or not. Also I doubt The 100 or SC will get much promotion cause CW promotes four shows each season and this season it’s Reign,TO,.CW alsowouldnt have kept The 100 til Midseason if they expected it to be a hit(they had CD at Midseason only cause of GGs short final season ).

  • Tom

    @ Ryan Canada

    “[BATB]needs a better lead in than HOD….”

BATB had a better lead in: The Vampire Diaries. As you well know, the reason BATB was moved is because its ratings plummeted in that choice spot at the end of last season. Moreover, although HOD’s ratings are poor, it’s nevertheless doing considerably better in the female 18 – 34 demo than BATB. Since that’s the key demo for both programs, I’d say BATB has lost its audience.

  • Charmed

Reign is expensive and performing average so far – CANCELLED
TTP is falling faster than The Secret Circle, and it’s not even spring yet – CANCELLED
BATB has been doing horribly and could hit a 0.2 in the finals – CANCELLED

I expect Arrow, TO, TVD, SPN, HOD, 1 Midseason show (OR 1 of Reign and TTP if both drastically flop) and TCD to be renewed (TCD for 13 episodes again).

  • starship

Reign doing a 0.6 out of VD’s 1.3 was a bit low for the fall season, but it keeping that 0.6 when VD fell to 0.9 the following week, shows that the 2 hardly have any cross-over audience at the moment and that Reign shouldn’t be written off quite yet, especially when TTP does horribly in A18-34 and especially W18-34 (i.e. the CW’s key demo).

  • Brandy

@Stephen, it’s been a year and half please move on!SC was cancelled cause it was very exspensive, was searilized andCW wanted a procedural and SC didn’t do well international markets or online and kept declining in ratings after the best leadin.BatB is cheap to make, sold well internationally and did well in DVr and while it’s ratings/retention of Vzd , it’s ratings we’re stable.SC would’ve been just as low being onfri and moving away from VD as it was already low.

  • Someone

“BATB had a better lead in: The Vampire Diaries. As you well know, the reason BATB was moved is because its ratings plummeted in that choice spot at the end of last season.”

No show over the past half decade has kept the ratings of its TVD lead in. That goes to show you it’s irrelevant.
