The commenter whines piling up over the methods of our Bubble Watch are many, and varied. The Cancellation Bear's not one to argue with boldness, but he is a creature of habit, network habit.

Let's look at the dramas that aired during the Fall that the CW has canceled in recent seasons:

Given that history, the bear is reluctant to predict that more than two Fall airing dramas will be canceled by the CW. Given that their current ratings are so much lower than the rest of the line up, those two right now are clearly The Carrie Diaries and Beauty & The Beast. That could change. Stay tuned.

Might the CW cancel more shows that are on the air right now? Anything's possible, but the bear's unlikely to predict it.

With three seasons complete, the CW syndication gods will demand that Hart Of Dixie be renewed for a fourth season. Maybe it'll be a short one like Nikita's, or maybe not. The bear doesn't get into predicting episode orders.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@Charmed I agree that TTP will probably be cancelled but you can’t compare SC /VD three seasons ago to Arrow/TTP today.TTT gets better reention out of Arrow than Reign & VD especially since both Arrow & VD returned down this season and the CW as a whole is down this season

  • Walter

I think that after The Carrie Diaries and Nikita have finished their half-season runs, they’ll put their Monday line-up on Fridays, and premiere Star-Crossed and The 100 on Mondays. They have to pull in better ratings than BatB and HoD (one would hope). Which would clear Reign for a full 22 episode season, even if it gets canceled come May. Also: I cannot imagine that the CW would pay for anymore than 6 episodes of Hart of Dixie to air next season with their awful ratings.

  • Charmed

@Brandy it was a very, very loose comparison! The main point was that TTP has lost a tenth every episode so far.

  • allfromthei

If they are gonna move any of the shows from their current nights, wouldnt they have announced it like now? When was Emily Owens cancelled and the other shows full season pick ups announced last year? Cause I feel like they should announce whatever they are doing now…

Also Tomorrow People and Reign will get renewed, theres just not enough programming to replace them heading into the new year. They may get axed next year though. At this rate CW seems rather predictable

  • Deedee

    @BBFan

In what universe could you think that BATB is the cheapest of the three shows to produce?? It has stunts, choreography, and pyrotechnics on pretty much every episode, not to mention the effects and CGI needed for the beasts. That is a costly show, my friend.

  • CrystalBall

The 100 isn’t a limited serie, it was designed to be 22 episodes, but since the CW took it for midseason they packed it in 13 episodes.

  • Melanie

Right now the Futon Critic lists 17 scripts that the CW has ordered for the 2014-15 development season including the two planted pilots for SPN & Arrow.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“So what the network habit really says is only 1 to 2 out of Tomorrow People, Reign, Carrie Diaries, Beauty & the Beast, Star Crossed and The 100 get renewed. When the cutoff is as low as one show, there’s no guarantee it is one of the fall options.”

I don’t think we’re that far apart. Given current ratings, TP & Reign get renewed, Carrie Diaries and Beauty & The Beast get canceled.

Any spring renewal pushes HoD final season premiere away from week 1, either to post ANTM finish or spring. Alternately, both spring shows get canceled, and the Pedowitz formula is preserved.

  • Brandy

@BBFan , first I never said CD SHOULD get renewed, bt I’m glad it did.Second, even tv critic Marc Berman thinks if TTP dosent mprove in ratings,it move to Mon while BataB moves to fri & The 100.premies after Arrow

  • Brandy

@BBfan, yes I once again expect CD to be cancelled but I expected it to be cancelled last season too but wit CW anything can happen. Also, I think when I mentioned SC after VD I was replying to another poster who said TTP is doing worse than the SC did so it would/will be cancelled. As for the Reign/TTP move, that was just a critic saying thats what he expects to happen if TTP keeps declining and everyone hee assume BaTB wil move to Fri at Midseason. Will either of those changes/moves happen?Time will tell.I disagree that Reign wil move:It’s highly promoted, very exspensive(or at least the pilot was) & it got the best leadin and lots of promoting cause CW is high on it, I think stay , after BatB didn’t move to fri in its first season following VD getting 0.5-0.6.Yes TTP is doing marginally better than Rein, but it’s declined every week and yet Reign stayed stable despiite Hallowwen, a Preempted and down leadin.

  • Rebooted

Heres what CW should do Midseason:

    Monday
    Star Crossed
    Hart of Dixie

They moved 90210 to the 9pm hour to launch Carrie Diaries, they can sure do it with Hart of Dixie.

    Tuesday
    Originals
    Supernatural

    Doing just fine.

    Wednesday
    Arrow
    Tomorrow People

Tomorrow People is the only new show that has potential to grow, so continue to give it the cushion of Arrow.

    Thursday
    The Vampire Diaries
    The 100

Reign isn’t the next major player on CW, so get it out of the CW’s dream slot NOW and put the 100 there.

    Friday
    Reign
    Beauty and the Beast

You may as well keep Reign all season, and throw it on Fridays with Beauty and the Beast after NIKITA and Carrie Diaries end their seasons.

  • Logan

Heres what CW should do Midseason:

    Monday
    Star Crossed
    Hart of Dixie

They moved 90210 to the 9pm hour to launch Carrie Diaries, they can sure do it with Hart of Dixie.
    Tuesday
    Originals
    Supernatural

    Doing just fine.

    Wednesday
    Arrow
    The 100
The 100 could do great with Arrow
    Thursdays
    TVD
    The tommorow people
it seems like it could be a good pair
    Fridays
    8/7c Reality shows
    9/8c Beauty and the beast
@Rebooted Reign is a limited series and i doubt it will get a back nine order with its ratings right now.

  • Logan

    Honestly
Hart of dixie isnt a good show next season has to be its last.
Beauty and the beast, seen it before it was ok but the ratings are low needs to get out.
TCD I love this show so much :( its a shame with those ratings i dont even see it as a sex and the city prequel.
The originals is really good. certain for renewal and i’m sure it will get a back nine order.
Supernatural is a very strong show in its 10th season I enjoy this show alot.
Arrow is amazing. Its ratings are decent but have dropped alot all i hope is they can rise alot.
The tomorrow people is so good, I think the viewers have dropped because the pilot was ok, but the show has turned out to be really good.
Its most likley to be renewed all i hope is the ratings dont drop further and they shouldnt if they have Arrow as a lead in. Right now…
TVD not a big fan of the show but its still good, needs to get rid of this doppleganger plot tho.
Reign is so far really good but its viewers arent so decent it could go either way but im not sure it will get a back nine if its supposed to be a limited series and its not really compatible with TVD doesnt share the same audience.
Star crossed looks like another beauty and the beast, it looks like a good show but i hope it isnt batb ratings wise.
The 100 has to be a hit. That needs to be the new Arrow on the cw because it looks amazing.
I watch most of the programming of the cw i hope all of my favorites get renewed but if they do and TCD and BATB are the only two get cancelled not sure if the cw will have enough room for new shows next year so atleast 1 more shows needs to be out.

    Dan’s CW Ratings Analysis

Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, Hart of Dixie, Arrow, The Originals, and likely The Tomorrow People (at this point) are certain to return next fall. TCD, BATB, Nikita (final season), Reign are headed to cancellation.

My guess is that Beauty and the Beast and possibly Reign (If given a full season) will move to Fridays by February or March after Carrie Diaries and Nikita end their 13 and 6 episode runs respectively. CW has 2 drama replacements for them. CW has BATB for a full season anyway.

    Possible midseason schedule by Feb

    Monday
    8:00 Hart of Dixie
    9:00 100 or Star Crossed

BATB is the weak link in the schedule but it has a 22 episode order. My guess is that CW will keep Hart of Dixie on Mondays and premiere a new drama on Mondays at 9. BATB will probably move to Fridays by Feb after TCD and Nikita end their runs/

    Tuesday
    8:00 The Originals
    9:00 Supernatural

The Originals will get a full season so Tuesdays should stay as is.

    Wednesday
    8:00 Arrow
    9:00 The Tomorrow People

The Tomorrow People will probably get a full season so Wednesdays should stay as is.

    Thursday
    8:00 The Vampire Diaries
    9:00 100 or Star Crossed

Reign may be canceled, if thats the case then CW will likely replace it with a drama by Feb or March. If Reign gets additional episodes or a full season then it may be moved to Fridays and pair with BATB until May and a new drama will air at 9. Either way, since CW has 2 new dramas, my guess is 1 of them will air at 9 Thurs and 1 will air 9 on Mondays.

    Friday
    8:00 Reign
    9:00 Beauty and the Beast

Nikita is set to end its run on December 27 and The Carrie Diaries will end its 13 episode order on January 31 (and will get no more episodes ordered) With 2 new dramas airing midseason CW will likely move its 2 lowest rated veteran dramas (with full seasons to fridays) BATB has a full order so its definitely moving there by midseason so CW can premiere a new drama in its place. If CW decides to give Reign more episodes, it could move to 8 or be replaced by a drama midseason. If Reign gets capped at 13 episodes it will still be replaced on Thursdays by a new drama and BATB will still move to fridays. The question is what will air at 8 on Fridays? Possibly the new Famous in 12? repeats? The point is CW has a lot of options. Its a guarantee that BATB moves to fridays however its unknown even by me what will happen with Reign.

Famous in 12 and Seed will probably premiere by the Summer.

I was one to argue The Carrie Diaries Vs. BATB last season in favor of TCD. One commentor kept arguing with me that both would be cancelled, however with the cancellation of both Gossip Girl and 90210 he was wrong and both were renewed. Both shows are done by this season but should air all episodes. CW made the right decision to renew them as they had to test out all shows. There’s no “well The Carrie Diaries got a 0.3 Vs. BATB 0.3 but TCS airs on fridays” nonsense, both are dreadfully low rated but CW will air the orders out.

  • Eric_Philly

I wouldn’t make too many assumptions for two reasons:
    1) You’re leaving out shows cancelled as final seasons.
    2) New leadership at the network may be more willing to shake things up (as he already has, by producing more supernatural/sci-fi series than the network has had in years [5, by my count, without Nikita]).

  • Dan

@Rebooted – Wow I did not even read your schedule originally, went back a page and I thought the exact same thing. Smart choices, that would seem smart for CW. Order more Reign as a bridge if it does OK, move it to Friday with BATB by March to have new eps air that night. And try another new series in the post Vampire Diaries slot and on Mondays with Hart of Dixie. Should both midseason dramas fail, next years schedule for CW could look like this.

    Mondays
    8:00 NEW DRAMA
    9:00 Supernatural

    Tuesdays
    8:00 The Originals
    9:00 NEW DRAMA

    Wednesdays
    8:00 ARROW
    9:00 The Tomorrow People

    Thursdays
    8:00 Vampire Diaries
    9:00 NEW DRAMA

    Fridays
8:00 Hart of Dixie (Full final season)
    9:00 ANTM

Its feasible that CW could order more midseason dramas. CW is slowly moving away from soapy teen dramas to DC comics, action, fantasy, supernatural, thriller series. After getting rid of 90210 and Gossip Girl and cancelling The Carrie Diaries after its 2nd season run. CW will nearly be free of those teen dramas and Hart of Dixie is more like 90210, Gossip Girl, or Carrie Diaries than it is like Supernatural, Arrow, or Vampire Diaries, both in premise and ratings, however its doing on par or better than Nikita in its 3rd season and hasn’t moved to fridays yet. Therefore its likely to get a full fourth season.

  • Dan

@Eric Philly – Well if you want to add to that 2010-2011 Smallville was in its final season, 2011-2012 One Tree Hill was in its final season (but it replaced H8R and all other dramas got full seasons), 2012-2013 Gossip Girl was in its final season, and this year Nikita is in its final season. So thats simply adding 1 show to the list

2013-14: Beauty and the Beast (likely), The Carrie Diaries (likely), Nikita
2012-13: 90210, Emily Owens, Gossip Girl
2011-12: Ringer, The Secret Circle, One Tree Hill
    2010-11: Life Unexpected, Hellcats, Smallville

However last season, a midseason comedy was renewed (The Carrie Diaries) so that took a slot away.

By May, if CW gets rid of Reign, BATB, Carrie Diaries, Nikita (already ending), and the 2 midseason dramas don’t make it. Then CW can have 6 returning dramas (Supernatural, Vampire Diaries, Arrow, Hart of Dixie, The Originals, The Tomorrow People); 2 dramas of which came from this season) AMTN, and still premiere 3 new dramas in the fall. If one of the midseason dramas gets renewed then that show will either premiere midseason or air in the fall and Hart of Dixie will simply begin once ANTM ends.

In order to stick with tradition and premiere 3 new dramas, next fall, if 4 veterans are certain to return in the fall (Arrow, Vampire Diaries, Supernatural and Hart of Dixie) plus ANTM that means only 2/5 dramas from this season can be renewed. Right now the best bet is Tomorrow People and The Originals and if those two stay better than Reign, 100, or Star Crossed then they will return.

  • Charmed

@Dan I wouldn’t count on TTP getting renewed if I were you

  • Dan

@Charmed – If TTP stays on par with Arrow and higher than CW’s midseason dramas, then it has a good shot. If it keeps dropping, than thats cause for worry but remember a 0.7-0.6 drop From Arrow to TTP is not bad. Reign’s drop from TVD is bad. CW is likely to renew 2 dramas from this season so if CW’s midseason dramas flop, and Reign gets cancelled, CW will probably renew Originals and The Tomorrow People. Although anything can happen.
