The commenter whines piling up over the methods of our Bubble Watch are many, and varied. The cancellation bear's not one to argue with boldness, but he is a creature of habit, network habit.

Let's look at the dramas that aired during the Fall that the CW has canceled in recent seasons:

  • 2012-13: 90210, Emily Owens
  • 2011-12: Ringer, The Secret Circle
  • 2010-11: Life Unexpected, Hellcats

Given that history, the bear is reluctant to predict that more than two Fall airing dramas will be canceled by the CW. Given that their current ratings are so much lower than the rest of the line up, those two right now are clearly The Carrie Diaries and Beauty & The Beast. That could change. Stay tuned.

Might the CW cancel more shows that are on the air right now? Anything's possible, but the bear's unlikely to predict it.

With three seasons complete, the CW syndication gods will demand that Hart Of Dixie be renewed for a fourth season. Maybe it'll be a short one like Nikita's, or maybe not. The bear doesn't get into predicting episode orders.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

oh, Kristen K. how low you dropped to 0.3. And,you leave Smallville because you thought you were too big star.Sad

  • Jon

I would not put Nikita among the cancelled shows as its got additional episodes to end the show on so the only correct term for it is like here “final season”. A cancelled show does not get additional episodes on upfronts they get nothing ;-)

Jon aka Bondoel give it up Nikitard nobody watches so it’s cancelled for all anyone cares :D

  • Duarte

@Billy Martins, thank you for make me day funnier .

@BBFan — Shows with full season orders shoot from early July to December. In this time they usually shoot 11 or 12 of their episodes. There’s a break for the holidays and then they resume shooting from January through March or early April and shoot the rest of the ordered episodes.
The shows with 13 episode orders finish them in December or January. When the networks give the ‘back 9′ orders there’s plenty of time Jan- March to film them. Or if they don’t – the actors are freed up for taking other jobs during pilot season – which is the Jan-Apr filming season.
This week or next the CW will be giving its ‘back 9′ orders so yes, The Originals will have plenty of time to produce 22 episodes.

  • Dan

@Jon – OK fair enough final season, but it still wont be renewed in May.

    @Billy Martins – So basically shift Wed-Thurs, Thurs-Fri, and Fri-Wed? I’m assuming that schedule is a joke.

  • Kate

I don’t remember who said it, but someone suggested moving HOD to 9pm on Monday’s since it’s a lock for renewal barring that it doesn’t drop to 0.2. Then premiering one of the midseason shows at 8pm on Monday since that faces less competition. Starcrossed probably pairs better with HOD than The 100.

They do need to move BATB and Reign (assuming they order the back 9) to Fridays, though. BATB is doing absolutely nothing on Mondays.

  • Adrian

    I love reading retentionista’s non-sense. A 0.6 is a 0.6 whether it’s out of a 0.8 or a 1.3
If either one of Reign or TTP fall further, they’ll be both cancelled, especially this year since the CW has four shows (almost half their lineup) doing ~0.9

I don’t think either of the mid season shows will be renewed, since they scheduled them on midseason for a reason (basically they have no faith in them?).

  • Chris K

they really need to put Beauty and the Beast out of it’s misery. I can’t even see it getting a full second season. the show is a joke.

  • RS

As much as I despise the show, I think Beauty and the Male Model will run all its 22 episodes (maybe on Friday or a summer burn-off). Oh, I saw a preview. They’ve given the beast a little scar. How cute. But even the CW can’t renew a show at 0.3 (not for more than a Nikita ending, and Beauty has plenty of time to end).

  • iSayso

The CW can clean house for all I care.

  • omabin

The idea of putting Beauty and the Beast’s second half of the season in the summer is not so bad. That would give them some first run scripted programming for the summer and could lead-out of Whose Line is It Anyway. I kind of think it would be best for the CW to go for that than to replace TCD with it on Friday. It’s just a waste of promotional effort at this point

  • ludotv

Reign could tank in the next few weeks (likely since it is an awful show) and that would give an edge to Carrie because 1) It’s probably cheaper, 2) It’s already on its second season and 3) It’s on Fridays

  • starship

Nothing will give an edge to Carrie unless the show suddenly grows 0.3 in the demo…Reign is a great show (if we actually forget the part where it’s supposed to be about historic people and events) and the fact that it didn’t drop on Halloween (and with TVD down 0.4)indicates it might have stabilised (we’ll see in the next couple of weeks).

  • Melanie

@Adrian “I don’t think either of the mid season shows will be renewed, since they scheduled them on midseason for a reason (basically they have no faith in them?).”
It sure seems that way with the networks, sometimes, doesn’t it?

I would think that lack of faith applies to Star-Crossed more than the 100. The 100 screams limited series to me – with the premise and fewer episodes they can keep the story tighter and more interesting — with no ‘procedural elements’ filler episodes are deadly to the narrative. So the 100 could be the CW’s Following. (or not) But I honestly don’t even know why they green-lit star crossed – the starcrossed romance they already have (BATB) is tanking and its their action-y shows that are doing well for them.
I think Star-Crossed will be DOA. I have hopes for the 100.

    @BBFan You’re welcome. :)

  • Tom

The Hollywood Reporter listed eight possible pilots the CW had to choose from for this season. I get the sense that Star-Crossed is the least original of the five ordered to series and was probably chosen more out of sheer necessity. Unless viewers are lucky, Star-Crossed will play out like a standard “girl falls for boy from the wrong side of the tracks” high school melodrama with a few painted up actors portraying faux aliens. The decision to cast Aimee Teegarden in the lead doesn’t give me cause for optimism either. She’s a demonstrably weak actress and, after the debacle KK created on BATB, the CW should have known better than to cast yet another lead actress based largely on looks. So, we’ll see what happens, but I’d be surprised if Star-Crossed attracts much of an audience.

  • JJA

I too think “The 100″ has a better chance of making it, provided of course that the show is actually good. It may appeal to the SyFy audience, and bring-in a whole new set of viewers to the CW.

“Star-Crossed” seems like something that’s been done before. It’s a cross between “Roswell” & “Alien Nation,” but it will have the production value of “Beauty & The Beast.” It’s DOA!

Plus, who is the fool at the CW that switched the title from “Oxygen” to “Star-Crossed”?

  • profemale

“after the debacle KK created on BATB”

Piss off Tom. You’re a loser.

  • Adrian

I agree that Star-crossed will be DOA. Probably will debut at Cult levels.

However I think that the fact that the CW decided to put Reign in the post-TVD slot in the fall and not the 100 is very telling, but I guess we’ll see. If the 100 favors teen crap and romance over the post-apocalyptic plot then it will be DOA too.

0.6 was automatic renewal on the CW last year but not anymore. Supernatural rising and the Originals getting TVD/Arrow level ratings raised the bar so these midseason shows need to do better than TPP/Reign and I’m not sure they will get those kinds of numbers but we’ll see.
