Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from September 16-November 3, 2013):

The commenter whines piling up over the methods of our Bubble Watch are many, and varied. The cancellation bear's not one to argue with boldness, but he is a creature of habit, network habit.

Let's look at the dramas that aired during the Fall that the CW has canceled in recent seasons:

  • 2012-13: 90210, Emily Owens
  • 2011-12: Ringer, The Secret Circle
  • 2010-11: Life Unexpected, Hellcats

Given that history, the bear is reluctant to predict that more than two Fall airing dramas will be canceled by the CW. Given that their current ratings are so much lower than the rest of the line up, those two right now are clearly The Carrie Diaries and Beauty & The Beast. That could change. Stay tuned.

Might the CW cancel more shows that are on the air right now? Anything's possible, but the bear's unlikely to predict it.

With three seasons complete, the CW syndication gods will demand that Hart Of Dixie be renewed for a fourth season. Maybe it'll be a short one like Nikita's, or maybe not. The bear doesn't get into predicting episode orders.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    CW midseason:

One new show replaces B&B on Monday, B&B relocates to Friday.

    The other?

That’s a tough one. Did Cult premeire on Friday last year?

They’re gonna have one slot empty on Friday anyways, so one of Star-crossed and The 100 could go there, pending Reign keeping its slot or not.

    Mon: Dixe – Star-Crossed/The 100
    Tues: Same
    Wed: Same
    Thurs: Vamp – Star-Crossed/The 100/Reign
    Fri: BATB – Star-Crossed/The 100

  • Justin121

Basically I think all veterans are safe.

BATB and Carrie Diaries could be kept as limited, 13-episode recurring series.

CW would be glad not having to worry about more than 2 slots come next season, with several limited returrning series which could fill the gaps/hiatuses, share timeslots, nurtured to syndic-able numbers.

  • Justin121

    * limited, 13-episode recurring, Friday series.

Friday could work as syndication warehouse, like parent CBS, for 0.3-rated series.

  • Brandy

@Jutin , no Cult premiered on Tues after HoD after EO MD finished but premier so poorly it was moved to fri after about tree episodes

  • Asashii

i like the origianl BATB, it was really good, this one is more for teen girls and twilight fans!!!

@JJA “Star-Crossed” seems like something that’s been done before. It’s a cross between “Roswell” & “Alien Nation,” but it will have the production value of “Beauty & The Beast.” It’s DOA!

LOL I actually agree, not only for the reasons you mentioned, but also with the fact that it stars Matt Lanter, who had played ‘Liam Court’ on 90210…and one of ‘Liam’s’ storylines in that show’s final seasons was suddenly becoming a model/actor, where he got a role playing a ‘hero who fought aliens…and/or was alien’ So to me, Matt’s role on Starcrossed seems like a continuation of “Liam’s movie star ‘alien fighter/alien’ storyline” from 90210. rme. :P

Anyway, as far as Reign, I’d love it if it got a S2 and was limited to only 13 eps each season, because then it could be more along the lines of a ‘network version of a cable show’, like The Tudors or The Borgias, who’s seasons were only 10-13 episodes each anyway. Anyway, once its current run ends in January (if it doesn’t get a ‘back 9′), I can at least then go back to live watching Grey’s Anatomy on Thursdays again. ;)

  • JJA

It does NOT matter that “Reign” and “The Tomorrow People” do not get ratings as high as VD, SPN, Arrow and TO. The CW can’t cancel both, so at least ONE will make it to next fall.

Anyway, both “Reign” and “The Tomorrow People” are expected to get full season orders. We have ’till May to figure out which (if any) gets canceled.

As for “Beauty & The Beast” and “The Carrie Diaries” getting canceled, my guess is that AT LEAST ONE will survive in some form. This is, after all, the CW (where logic ends). A summer series maybe?

@anon–LOL!! I didn’t realize that about Matt Lanter.

  • Brandy

@Jja, they can and possibly will be cancel both.CWs cancelled 5-6 shows a season with Pedowitz running it.

  • iSayso

    Cancel ’em . . . NOW!

  • Oliver

  • Truth

So where are the back nine orders?

  • JJA

    @Brandy–5 to 6 shows ??

Last year they only canceled 4: GG, 90210, Emily Owens & Cult (and GG wasn’t really a cancelation).

The year before, it was 3: One Tree Hill, The Secret Circle and Ringer (and again, OTH wasn’t really canceled).

THIS year, they may get to 5 (Nikita + 4 others).

  • xprophet

SPN keeps on rockin’ and will be on for as long as the stars wish. Learn it…love it….live it!!

  • Truth

Be careful, the TVD crazies will crucify anyone that speaks positively about SPN.

  • Brandy

@Jja you’re forgetting H8 tr,Remodeled,The Frame So yes 5-6 shows. How do you think they went from premiring 2-3 new shows a season to five a season?by canceling more shows

  • dave

I hope they keep the tomorrow people, arrow, the originals. all are on my weekly must watch list. even with the miscast on tomorrow people where the character has too many ties and the story revolves around him so they can’t even make a change.

hopefully it survives. I’d expect Hart of Dixie to get the syndication renewal, and I think they are looking at Arrow to do the same down the line. I have a feeling we see a short order of tomorrow people next season, but that would at least give a chance at telling more of the story.

  • Mina

Hoping BATB, CD & Reign gets canned.

  • Shameka

Beauty and the Beast is the ONLY thing i watch on the CW. I freaking love that show. If they cancel it then I will have no need to ever watch the CW station again. All the networks do is cancel the good TV shows for bullcrap shows. If you ask me, ratings don’t exist. They put whatever they want on TV to brainwash us !

  • marica

We hope that “Beauty and the Beast” is canceled! The show is really bad and boring, the actors are mediocre. seek to raise the ratings with sex scenes but there is chemistry between the two actors, seem ridiculous. Jay Ryan has no charisma and charm.
