The commenter whines piling up over the methods of our Bubble Watch are many, and varied. The cancellation bear's not one to argue with boldness, but he is a creature of habit, network habit.

Let's look at the dramas that aired during the Fall that the CW has canceled in recent seasons:

  • 2012-13: 90210, Emily Owens
  • 2011-12: Ringer, The Secret Circle
  • 2010-11: Life Unexpected, Hellcats

Given that history, the bear is reluctant to predict that more than two Fall airing dramas will be canceled by the CW. Given that their current ratings are so much lower than the rest of the line up, those two right now are clearly The Carrie Diaries and Beauty & The Beast. That could change. Stay tuned.

Might the CW cancel more shows that are on the air right now? Anything's possible, but the bear's unlikely to predict it.

With three seasons complete, the CW syndication gods will demand that Hart Of Dixie be renewed for a fourth season. Maybe it'll be a short one like Nikita's, or maybe not. The bear doesn't get into predicting episode orders.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

“They put whatever they want on TV to brainwash us!”

    First you need a brain.

  • Shane

Wish the CW would release this year’s The Selection pilot online :(

  • Jon

Nikita isnt really cancelled either. Its the same as OTH,GG it got additional episodes to conclude the show on at the May 2013 upfronts.

The CW seems to cancel 3-4 shows per season and they usually wait until the end of the season. Since they do wait til the end of the season, I think “The Tomorrow People” will be cancelled. It’s this season’s “The Secret Circle”. It’s already dropped 1/3 of its viewers and I think it will continue to lose viewers. The CW also seems to like buzzworthy shows, which is why “Gossip Girl” and “90210” stayed on past their primes. I think “Reign” will likely be cancelled because it seems like it’s getting no buzz at all. It’s hard for me to make a case for “Beauty And The Beast”, because it’s shed 2/3 of its viewers since its Season 1 debut. But it’s getting a decent bump from DVR viewing. If I’m right about my first two cancellations, then “Beauty And The Beast” could be on the bubble. “Nikita” is already one show on the way out. So based on all of the above, I think “The Carrie Diaries” could sneak through. It’s pulling in the same rating as “Nikita”, which has survived 3 seasons on weak Friday nights and it gets some buzz for its connection to “Sex And The City”. If “The Carrie Diaries” can stay steady in ratings and viewership, I think the CW will give it a pass. Of course, the midseason shows could figure into this, but they’re not even on yet.

@Rudy I generally agree with you except I don’t think BATB is doing all that great in DVR – sure, it increased 100% in the list last week. But all that means is that even WITH live+7 added in, it barely matched Reign’s & Tomorrow People’s live+SD numbers. .3+.3 still=cancelled.

I suppose that there is a scenario where renewing BATB is the best of bad options for the CW, but I don’t think its going to happen. I think BATB got a renewal to see if it could develop an audience away from TVD. It couldn’t. Its already at .3 and its not even Spring yet. Nikita got .3 (on Friday) and that wasn’t enough for a full season or even a 13 episode renewal. (And Nikita has all those internationsl deals and what-have-you same as I hear from BATB fan excuse bingo)
Since he took over, Pedowitz has worked on ‘fixing’ one night a week. Last year it was Wednesday, this year its Tuesday – looks like next year its Monday’s turn. I think HOD is Friday bound for its final season. Maybe SPN moves to Monday so the Originals can launch a new show. Whatever — I think BATB is a goner. Sorry Beasties, I feel for you — enjoy it while you can.

I don’t disagree but technically both Reign and The Tomorrow People could have gotten a 0.3 the same as Beauty and the Beast. For Beauty and the Beast, that’s a 100% increase; for the other shows that’s a 50% increase since their L+SD ratings are already at 0.6. The list cutoff was at 55%, so we only know they got 55% or below.

  • Fearless Diva

I don’t know if Tomorrow People will get cancelled though. It’s doing relatively well. Furthermore, I doubt that if The Flash gets picked up, they will pair it with Arrow. Last year everyone assumed The Originals would be paired behind TVD and what a surprise it was when that didn’t happen. Lastly, there’s still The Hundred and Star Crossed to get through until they make their decision.

BATB? delete now! poor performance with mediocre actors. Jay does not draw because he has not charisma, Kristin is a piece of wood!

  • Dabangg

    Just clean house, CW.

  • Stroma

[We hope that “Beauty and the Beast” is canceled! The show is really bad and boring, the actors are mediocre. seek to raise the ratings with sex scenes but there is chemistry between the two actors, seem ridiculous. Jay Ryan has no charisma and charm.]

In what world does Jay not have chemistry and charm he is the best thing about this crappy show. I for one would be glad if that show is cancelled for different reasons, so that Jay can get away from bad actor Kreuk and be in a better show.

  • Sara

I really hope beauty and the beast gets renewed I just finished catching up, and it’s really good.

  • Pierrette Garant

I cannot believe that BATB could be cancelled. Just watched epi.. 7th. what a good suspense, the best writers.great cast, nothing more to say about Vince and Cat, they are the greatest,I do not understand the ratings, and why the move from thrusday to monday, I do hope CBS will keep it alive please— we do need more good shows like that

  • Andrea King

DO NOT CANCEL Beauty and the Beast!!!! This show has COMPLETELY caught my attention with the second season!!!! It is THE BEST SHOW OF THE FALL SCHEDULE!!

  • Apophis99

The CW has two good shows, Arrow and BATB. The rest are teen crap-fests, so naturally one has to go!
