Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from September 16-November 3, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mindy Project :| :| :| 0.73
Dads  0.74
Brooklyn Nine-Nine :| :| :| 0.84
Bob’s Burgers renewed 0.95
American Dad final season on Fox 0.98
New Girl      1.02
Bones      1.02
Glee renewed 1.05
Family Guy      1.23
The Simpsons renewed 1.34
Sleepy Hollow renewed 1.46

After doing this for seven seasons, the level of anxiety from fans over completely safe shows no longer surprises the cancellation bear. Still, with so little new to write about on a weekly basis about the status of current Fox shows, he figured he’d throw out an obvious headline for the Bones fans.

The move to Friday isn’t an indication of the “death” of the show, nor is Fox trying to “kill” the show. (Note to the crazy, networks need not “try” to kill a show. They just cancel it.) Fox simply needs a timeslot for Almost Human. By far, their best night for that is Monday. Given that, they could move either a rookie show that’s aired 5 episodes (Sleepy Hollow), or a show in its eighth season, that presumably has viewers that will follow it. Only the truly myopic would suggest the former.

Could Bones still end after this season? Certainly not because of its ratings. Only the production company or the stars wanting to call it quits might end it, and the bear doesn’t attempt to predict events like those.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show’s new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It’s calculated by dividing a show’s new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show’s own network. The network’s average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.
