Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from September 16-November 3, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mindy Project :| :| :| 0.73
Dads  0.74
Brooklyn Nine-Nine :| :| :| 0.84
Bob's Burgers renewed 0.95
American Dad final season on Fox 0.98
New Girl      1.02
Bones      1.02
Glee renewed 1.05
Family Guy      1.23
The Simpsons renewed 1.34
Sleepy Hollow renewed 1.46

After doing this for seven seasons, the level of anxiety from fans over completely safe shows no longer surprises the cancellation bear. Still, with so little new to write about on a weekly basis about the status of current Fox shows, he figured he'd throw out an obvious headline for the Bones fans.

The move to Friday isn't an indication of the "death" of the show, nor is Fox trying to "kill" the show. (Note to the crazy, networks need not "try" to kill a show. They just cancel it.) Fox simply needs a timeslot for Almost Human. By far, their best night for that is Monday. Given that, they could move either a rookie show that's aired 5 episodes (Sleepy Hollow), or a show in its eighth season, that presumably has viewers that will follow it. Only the truly myopic would suggest the former.

Could Bones still end after this season? Certainly not because of its ratings. Only the production company or the stars wanting to call it quits might end it, and the bear doesn't attempt to predict events like those.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Even if Bones scores a 1.3 like MasterChef Junior will it be renewed??

  • SueK

    Bones in ninth season.

  • Lukes

Why is Mindy still with three smilies? No polemics, just curious.

  • Joe Smith

could care less what night it airs. like millions of other viewers, i don’t watch scripted shows live.

  • gerry

when bones started, i never would have thought it would last this long.

i guess since dads got a full season pickup, we’ll be seeing that sickly smiley for the remainder of the season..? LOL

  • Atlanta

    Yay for Bones,.

  • Erwan From France

FOX ! You can cancel everything you want, but don’t touch Bones ! PLEAAAAAASEEEEEEE

  • Bill Gorman

“Why is Mindy still with three smilies? No polemics, just curious.”

That was the primary subject of last week’s post.

  • JJ

Bones move to Friday pretty much guarantees it another season considering how steady the ratings currently are.

  • David Howell

Bones has been everywhere on the schedule and survived. Why not Friday?

Plus, it’s about as Friday-suitable as the net has demographically. I’d actually consider it going at 9 after Masterchef Jr next season.

  • Wright

Bones and New Girl need to be renewed. I like Dads too, but the ratings don’t justify a renewal. I LOVE Sleepy Hollow!!!!

  • Jess

I’m not the biggest Bones fan but with that kind of ratings, they deserve a final season.. You might hate it but shows like Bones and Castle has loyal fans and I believe they’ll follow their show everwhere. Because of that, I don’t think moving to Friday can hurt Bones that much.

Also I’m thinking they won’t give Dads a second season but that’s FOX so nothing can surprise me

  • Ultima

With Murder Police not on the schedule anymore, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Dads wind up on Sunday at some point. I could even see it getting renewed to fill the hole they have on Sundays next fall (assuming they aren’t going with a drama instead and don’t announce a new animated show in the next couple of weeks).

  • Raising Hope Fan

What will happen with raising hope?

  • Scandalicious

I think this week will say a lot about the Fox comedy block. I really hope B99 can come back strong or at least solid.

Sleep Hollow dipped last night but that is usual for a Fox show after the World Series. At least it was is already renewed. Hopefully it can rise next week! Sleepy Hollow and B99 are the best shows on Fox in my opinion! I want to see them stick around!

  • FallerWanderer

I guess we’re just have to see… What does the FOX say?

  • Feedback

I would have moved Glee to Fridays instead. Glee is going to end next season anyway, Bones could still be a long-term player. They need to make sure it doesn’t fumble.

Nice to see Sleepy Hollow is their #1 scripted show

  • bastian

But Glee can make so much money off of song purchases and other things that if you moved it to Friday’s, FOX would be potentially cutting off revenue which is not something they’re likely to do. I have a strong feeling Glee will be moved to a different timeslot next year, but certainly not to Friday.

  • Dan

    Dan’s FOX Rating Analysis

Dramas: Bones will return for a tenth and likely final season, but ratings wont determine that. The factor will be if David Boreanaz wants to do another season. My guess is that he will sign on for another season. Bones has been almost moved to Fridays for over 7 years now, so my bet is ratings will only get slightly worse, Sleepy Hollow and Glee have been renewed already.

Comedies: FOX is in an interesting pickle this year. All of their comedies’ numbers are essentially the same and they are all around for full seasons. New Girl is certain to return and of all 3 other comedies, Brooklyn Nine-Nine will most likely be back. Dads will probably get cancelled after its full season, The Mindy Project could go either way but still has a full season to determine that. Plus FOX has 3 midseason comedies, its still too early to tell. With Raising Hope likely done after its syndication fulfilled fourth season, I wouldnt be surprised if FOX only bought back New Girl and Brooklyn Nine Nine back. The Simpsons and Bobs Burgers have been renewed and American Dad has been renewed for TBS. FOX should renew Family Guy any day now, but I’m curious as to when exactly.
