After doing this for seven seasons, the level of anxiety from fans over completely safe shows no longer surprises the Cancellation Bear. Still, with so little new to write about on a weekly basis about the status of current Fox shows, he figured he'd throw out an obvious headline for the Bones fans.

The move to Friday isn't an indication of the "death" of the show, nor is Fox trying to "kill" the show. (Note to the crazy, networks need not "try" to kill a show. They just cancel it.) Fox simply needs a timeslot for Almost Human. By far, their best night for that is Monday. Given that, they could move either a rookie show that's aired 5 episodes (Sleepy Hollow), or a show in its eighth season, that presumably has viewers that will follow it. Only the truly myopic would suggest the former.

Could Bones still end after this season? Certainly not because of its ratings. Only the production company or the stars wanting to call it quits might end it, and the bear doesn't attempt to predict events like those.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@Justin121 – X Factor’s 3 year deal might be up but I would be surprised if FOX let it go after this season. Maybe next though.

Glee could definitely move to Fridays at 8 next season.

Bones moving to Fridays are scaring people, but FOX needs to air new dramas on Mondays

    Almost Human/Sleepy Hollow

    then

    Almost Human/The Following

My guess is that if Almost Human doesn’t get more episodes, Rake will move back to pair with The Following so Glee can return to Thursdays at 9 by seasons end.

Its better to try out new shows with a bright future on Mondays even if it means moving Bones. Bones will probably get a nice final season next year.

  • omabin

I think pairing Glee and The Folllowing is a bad idea, the shows have nothing in common.

  • omabin

    @Dan,

“The 2011-2012 development season was garbage for CBS & FOX and, ABC & NBC barely got anything out of it either.”

FOX 2011/2012: The X-Factor, New Girl (given their real estate, this was a big successful season)
CBS 2011/2012: 2 Broke Girls, Person of Interest, (Unforgettable)
NBC 2011/2012: Grimm (You could say the voice really came out of this season too as it was when it took off as serious in-season programming)
ABC 2011/2012: Once Upon a Time, Revenge, Scandal, Suburgatory, Last Man Standing

This was one of the most successful seasons from the last years for any network except possibly NBC (and certainly not the cw).

    Compare it with adjacent seasons:
    FOX 2010/2011: Raising Hope?
    CBS 2010/2011: H50, Blue Bloods
NBC 2010/2011: Hm… the voice if you consider it from this season
    ABC 2010/2011: Hm……

FOX 2012/2013: The Mindy Project (cough cough), The Following
    CBS 2010/2011: Elementary
    NBC 2010/2011: Chicago Fire, Revolution
ABC 2010/2011: Nashville, The Neighbors (cough cough)

  • ludotv

I am still hopeful for The Mindy Project to get a 3rd season and ultimately a 4th one (blah syndication blah blah). The ratings are shaky (but better than Dads) but the main reason is that it has an audience that is highly sought after by advertisers (and in turn by network TV execs), young female and probably with a mid to high income at their disposal. Fox did good with New Girl and The Mindy Project is the imperfect but adequate pair and as much as Fox would like Mindy to have better ratings, their new comedies haven’t been such big successes that would make them optimist about a new comedy replacing Mindy next fall. Fox has to be mindful also at how few comedies targeting a young female audience have been a success across all networks, even on cable (Girls is no ratings success) so unless there is a highly promising new comedy in the roaster… I’d say Mindy is a safer bet..

  • Sarah

I have a feeling New Girl’s ratings will go up a lot now that Damon Wayans Jr is back for the rest of the season.

  • jessica

I have a feeling I might watch my 2nd episode of New Girl now that Damon Wayans Jr is back on the show.

The promos for Almost Human show it to be almost watchable.

  • Dan

@Omabin – No when I meant 2011-2012 development season, I mean Pilots developed during that pilot season for the next season. So I really should have said shows that aired during 2012-2013. It was worded badly.

That was a very successful season.

  • Dan

And by “That was a very successful season” I do mean 2011-2012, the following year, there was virtually no hits. Maybe Chicago Fire, The Following, and Elementary but everything else barely squeaked by.

  • eddie

    Why move Bones to Friday!!!!

  • ChuckTesta

And Raising Hope is still effectively cancelled. You can’t ignore that fact much longer.

  • Dan

@Eddie – Limited slots, old show. The fact that Bones would do reasonably well anywhere on the schedule. If you look back to news articles from 2007 you’d see that FOX would always have a midseason schedule where Bones would end up airing on Fridays so new shows would air during the week but those new shows always failed.

The point is FOX would rather put a 9 year old drama on fridays then air either a new drama there like Almost Human or Sleepy Hollow.

  • Joseph Lambert

For X Factor and American Idol, one of them will be canceled, or maybe both. X Factor scored its lowest ratings to date on Wednesday night. American Idol’s ratings have been tumbling since season 11, but it still averages 12 million viewers per show.

  • Drew

I’m just glad now I will have something to watch on Fridays since CSI: NY was cancelled, I just couldn’t stay interested in Blue Bloods, they lost me over a season ago.. Bones I will follow anywhere it goes in the schedule!

  • James

On Bones what about the leaked comment from David Boreanaz that he said that he was leaving the show and this was his last season?

  • EDC

    @James

He flat out said multiple times on twitter that he’s on board with S10 if Fox renews.

  • Kevin

Okay… so someone has to say it. Bones has sucked hard for a very long time. It is literally the worst television show I can think of. Is is worse than the Fat Mindy Lobotomy? Yes. Is it worse than the Fun Fatty Night? Yes. Is it worse than the worst episode of This Old House? YES. Get this POS off the air already. The story line died 5 seasons ago. Forensically analyze that!

  • Kevin

I reiterate. It is worse that The Finder. I went there Fox. I WENT THERE!

  • zack

I thought this was bones finale season?

  • Paul

Shocked at Sleepy Hollows ratings. The show is just awful IMO. Happy to see where B99 is If it can hold there until Super Bowl Sunday I think it will get a 2nd season.

  • Justin

FOX should just bring Archer from FX onto Sunday nights animation domination.
