The CW didn't surprise the Cancellation Bear yesterday with its full season pickups of Tomorrow People, Reign and The Originals. Fans of the former two shouldn't get too confident. The CW picked up full seasons of Ringer and The Secret Circle in Fall, 2011, and the bear caught them in May, 2012.

The lack of new episodes ordered this season for The Carrie Diaries either marks it as defacto canceled and playing out the string, similar to  Life Unexpected in 2010, or  certain to be canceled, depending on which version of its situation you believe.

Only 13 episodes were ordered for The Carrie Diaries this season, putting it in the same "spring show sophomore" situation as Life Unexpected in 2010. Since no more episodes were ordered yesterday, the bear counts the show as defacto canceled and playing out the string, again, just like Life Unexpected in 2010.

However, after the CW news was out yesterday many messaged the bear claiming that the CW had announced last spring that there would only be 13 episodes of Carrie this season no matter what. If true, the bear missed that announcement, because he certainly would have noted it as nonsensical at the time. It makes no sense for the CBS/WB syndication factory that is the CW to cap veteran shows at 13 episodes/season. But if that is somehow true, yesterday's CW announcement wasn't bad news for the show, just no news for the show, and the bear won't argue with those who'd say the show is simply certain to be canceled in May, instead of already canceled now.

Those who'd like to note "You were wrong last year, you'll be wrong again!" should stick around.

With three seasons complete, the CW syndication gods will demand that Hart Of Dixie be renewed for a fourth season. Maybe it'll be a short one like Nikita's, or maybe not. The bear doesn't get into predicting episode orders.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I agree with Bill, TCD is effectively cancelled. :D

If anything, additional episodes would’ve been ordered yesterday. This show is literally screaming “Life Unexpected”

There’s no way it’s coming back. BATB, you’re next ;)

@Bill (if you missed my question on page 1):
How do the 6 episodes for Nikita help in syndication? It will only be at 72. So Nikita NOT getting a full 4th season kind of disproves that every 3-full-season-show gets another season for sure because of the syndication gods.

66 or 72 episodes for Nikita don’t matter at all for syndication so the 6 episodes are acutally really just to wrap it up. The syndication gods would have asked for a full 4th season to get it to the magical 88 episodes…at least that has always been your reasoning for the last couple of years…

“A” pretty much wrote the same question above as well in the meantime.

  • Christian

Even if it winds up being correct, putting “The Carrie Diaries” as cancelled is wrong at this point. “Certain to be cancelled” is the correct format to place it. What if they want a 3rd season of 13 episodes? You can think whatever you want Bill, but you’re not one of the network heads, so stop acting like one!

    @ Billiam

Watch it. Some of us Roswell fans are still around. Please don’t compare us to TCD fans.

  • Pepper

TCD has been cancelled – it’s not a limited series and even if it was, it has still been cancelled. Where are heck are all these wacky people coming from?

  • omabin

I disagree with this idea of having it as de facto cancelled. It’s not inconceivable that it comes back again as spackle for next fall. I don’t see the benefit of having it now as cancelled.

  • poweranimals

I don’t think you can say it’s canceled yet. Sure it’s certain to be canceled, but there’s really no room for them to order more episodes. They’ve got two new shows coming this spring so they need the timeslots.

  • A

    @abc

Didn’t even see that, but that disclaimer has been bugging me all season long. Also, for future reference, Nikita will be ending with 73 episodes, not that it makes a difference for syndication, because it was renewed with a sophomore 23 when The CW still had hopes for it.

  • A

Uh, by the first that, I meant I didn’t see your post. Sorry for being confusing, lol. I hope we get an answer.

  • milo

The only thing sillier than insisting that Carrie isn’t cancelled because there hasn’t been an official announcement, is comparing Carrie to Sleepy Hollow.

It’s also hilarious to see so many so angry and insisting the site is so terrible just because it points out that a cancelled show is cancelled. Seriously, hasn’t the show been getting 0.3 demos?

  • Brandy

May 9 deadline reported Nikita,Carrie Diaries renewed ,”the network isn’t confirming the size of the pickups but Carries is automatically a 13 episode order as its a midseasonshow”

May 16 deadline reported CW eyes The 100,Carrie Diaries for Imited Runs
The 100& Carrie Diaries both ordered for 13 episodes are potential candidates to air a limited number of episodes each season

Carrie aw always intended to be a limited series of 13 episodes a season and t didn’t get a backorder last season even at Midseason , it could have but was still renewed

“Carrie aw always intended to be a limited series of 13 episodes a season and t didn’t get a backorder last season even at Midseason , it could have but was still renewed”

Carrie was a 2013 spring premiere, there was no “back order” possible.

  • Cory

In other news NOT related to TCD …. a show with Summer Glau in it is doing well!! Maybe it’s because she doesn’t have a main role in Arrow or that she didn’t join the series until Season 2 but either way, a show with Summer Glau looks like it’ll make it to another season. Now if Christian Slater could just have that kind of luck.

  • Tariq

how it TCD any different from Sleepy Hollow other than SH getting a second season early renewal

  • milo

“It’s not inconceivable that it comes back again as spackle for next fall.”

It is when it’s getting 0.3 ratings. Reruns of other shows make better spackle than that. Shows only get spackle orders when ratings are lackluster, not when they are flat out terrible. And if they really needed the spackle they’d bring back pretty much any other show on the network since all are getting higher ratings.

  • Tariq

TCD does amazingly with online viewership it saved it last season it can do it again!
I really hope Super Fum Night gets renewed and changes your new short order = cancelled

  • Bad Wolf

Wow ! Can everybody calm down please ? The Carrie Diaries is obviously NOT a limited series : 1) It was a midseason show last season and that’s why it got only 13 episodes 2) Carrie is exactly like Gossip Girl, 90210 and all the other high school teen shows produced by the CW over the years, so seriously, what would be the POINT to make it a limited series ??

Under the Dome is a limited series because it’s source material and because it’s been conceived as a summer event. The Following is a limited series because of its star, Kevin Bacon, which didn’t want to commit to a full-time show. But Carrie ? Seriously ?

    @Christian

Bill is entitled to his opinion. If you don’t agree, fine, and let’s see who’s right and who’s wrong this spring. But what does it change for the actual show, to have it labeled as ‘Cancelled’ or ‘Likely Cancelled’ on this site ? Absolutely nothing. It seems to be psychologically difficult for some fans to face the truth.

  • Brandy

@Bill what delousions?I provided proof that Carrie wasn’t meant to have more than 13 episodes a season. You could’ve found that on your own.May 16 Mark said “we looked at Carrie as a limited series last year too”.
Mike & Molly,Suburgatory were given full seasons this seasons yet supposed to air at Midseason.

  • Brandy

Also to your partial backorder means cancelled theory , OTH in season five started at Jan and got 18 episodes but was still renewed.
So CW could’ve ordered more episodes of CD last season if they wanted to but it’s a limited series so they didn’t.

  • abc

    @A:
Unfortunately it seems like Bill is ignoring us while still replying to other (later) posts here. Maybe he thinks that it’s better not to answer because he doesn’t have a good one? That would be a rather disappointing attitude…
