Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from September 16-November 10, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mindy Project :| :| :| 0.75
Dads  0.75
Brooklyn Nine-Nine :) :) :) :) 0.85
Bob's Burgers renewed 0.92
American Dad final season on Fox 0.96
Glee renewed 0.99
New Girl      1.04
Bones      1.04
Family Guy      1.19
The Simpsons renewed 1.25
Sleepy Hollow renewed 1.46

Brooklyn 9-9 ratings started well, but by its third episode it had fallen to a 1.4 rating (just 68% of Fox's ratings average that week), and the cancellation bear predicted it to be likely to be canceled. However, as with all early predictions, changing results often cause changing predictions.

Since that third episode, Brooklyn 9-9 ratings have risen, while the rest of Fox's scripted ratings have drifted downward. Its most recent 2 week's 1.6 ratings were each over 85% of Fox's scripted rating average for those weeks which now indicates likely renewal.

  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

*I meant “at the very least, I think Dads should be likely cancelation”, not likely renewal! Sorry about that!

  • JD

Still a promising show that still only hits on about 25% of the intended laughs, but the potential is there. Just ditch that obnoxious assistant. Like, completely.

It’s really earned the post New Girl spot. It seems to have tailed off as far as the DVR #s go lately, but it might still lose less of New Girl’s demo that the Mindy Project does every week. Althought Mindy brings something to the table judging by the adrates.

I’m going to say it again, Glee continues to drop, now it’s below Bones and before long it will probably be lower than one or both of the comedies below it. If they don’t have a contract signed they may still back out of that renewal, and if they do it would make a lot of sense to do the shortest season they can and/or move it to Friday nights instead of Bones.

  • SV

As long as FOX keeps Mindy, they can do whatever they want with B99. But Dads is AWFUL & was off of my DVR by episode 3. It needs to go. Mindy is a very funny show, I don’t know why more people aren’t watching it..maybe because it had to find its footing post-season 1. New Girl has really declined..I couldn’t wait to watch it, now I’m apathetic.

  • Dee

I think the Mindy Project needs more female leads. It came across as a very female oriented show, which is why I was hesitant to watch it, but it became a dude heavy show with Mindy in the center, and one funny (tamara) and two mediocre (bev and betsy) female characters. I think he females that were watching were quickly turned off, and i think the males never tuned in. I would schedule it this way for mid-season if I were Fox:
    8:00- Dads
    8:30- B99
    9:00- Mindy
    9:30- New Girl
That way you could get the people who normally tune into NG, and you could pick up some of the residual B99 viewers. I know that will never happen, but if they want to keep mindy around as much as they seem to, that’s what they should do.

  • Billiam

Not sure I’ve gotten one legit laugh from Mindy Project this season. Officially off the DVR now. Really failed to cash in on all the promise from last year. New Girl is getting away from itself a bit, but at least it has its moments. Same with Brooklyn 99.

  • SJ

Brooklyn 99 and The Mindy Project seem like a natural pairing given their office setting and NBC talent. I think Fox wants to strengthen B99 by airing it after the Superbowl-infused New Girl in the hope that it can lead off the 8pm hour next season with Mindy following it, with a new show getting the post-NG slot.

What is with all these theories that Fox will renew Dads just so it can pair it up with animation on Sundays? The last show they tried to do that with was Sons of Tucson some three-four years ago and that failed miserably.

I cannot believe Bones is ACTUALLY moving to Friday night, after all these years! Why Bones? Why not Glee? Or The X Factor? What if Almost Human flops and Glee and TXF stay in the low/mid-1s? They will have just weakened Bones, a veteran and a steady performer that could always get a 2 rating in a fairly competitive time slot. Not to mention that Almost Human, if it flops, will likely drag Sleepy Hollow down. It’s a very risky move that will likely result in no real payoff.

Interesting how off Bill and Tom are on their predictions…when it comes to shows I have been watching this season, Mindy Project, Brooklyn 99 and The Crazy Ones on CBS, among others, thank god Bill’s predictions.

  • B

Weird to keep Dads as certain cancellation. The show is horrid, but 75% of relative ratings isn’t exactly certain cancellation range, especially since it’s produced by 20th.

  • Olive

I still find TMP tremendously more entertaining that either Brooklyn 9-9 or New Girl.

  • Jeff R.

I don’t see how Dads and the Mindy Project can be two faces apart with the exact same numbers; Mindy is, if any thing, in the position where syndication math works against it rather than for it.

  • Danny

New Girl is a comedy? I never would have guessed.

  • awesome-49

    Great love b-99

  • Paulo PT

B99, best new comedy this year. After 3 episodes I was committed to this show.

  • Ronak

B99 is the best freshman comedy, if not freshman show of the year. Happy to see it gaining enough of an audience to stick around.

  • TV God

I think Bones will do well on Friday. Either way, it’s getting renewed for a 10th (and most likely final) season. I love New Girl, it hasn’t been all that funny lately, but I still like it. Dads, B-99, and Mindy I don’t really like.

  • Jeshine

Wow, a lot of astroturfing here today. Mindy is going to be cancelled. Period.

  • Dan

Brooklyn 9-9 will be renewed. If not it will be the first post superbowl show since 1994 to be axed that May. Also with New Girl a certain renewal and everything else essentially bubble B99 is the most likely candidate to return.

Dads could be renewed for the vacated 9:30 Sunday slot in fall and then by midseason it could move to 7:30.

The Mindy Project could get a deal worked out for another season as its doing OK and stable for its timeslot.

Raising Hope hasn’t premiered but the Friday move is the kiss of death and it will make syndication this season.

There’s a good chance all 4 of FOX’s Tuesday shows could return next season. Who knows?

Not sure why FOX is taking its sweet time to renew Family Guy. And Bones will get a 10th and final season if David Boreanaz agrees to it. There’s no chance Glee will get its episode order cut for its 6th and final season when it probably will move to Fridays at 8 but X Factor could get cut to 2 hours next season rather than 3 so a drama could air Wednesdays at 9.

  • Jaime04

Contracts are typically already in place before renewals are announced.

  • Jake Shakesworth

    Wahoo! Love B99!
