Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from September 16-November 10, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mindy Project :| :| :| 0.75
Dads  0.75
Brooklyn Nine-Nine :) :) :) :) 0.85
Bob's Burgers renewed 0.92
American Dad final season on Fox 0.96
Glee renewed 0.99
New Girl      1.04
Bones      1.04
Family Guy      1.19
The Simpsons renewed 1.25
Sleepy Hollow renewed 1.46

Brooklyn 9-9 ratings started well, but by its third episode it had fallen to a 1.4 rating (just 68% of Fox's ratings average that week), and the cancellation bear predicted it to be likely to be canceled. However, as with all early predictions, changing results often cause changing predictions.

Since that third episode, Brooklyn 9-9 ratings have risen, while the rest of Fox's scripted ratings have drifted downward. Its most recent 2 week's 1.6 ratings were each over 85% of Fox's scripted rating average for those weeks which now indicates likely renewal.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@SJ – Yeah but Sons of Tucson airing in that slot just pushed American Dad to 7:30. Next fall there is no American Dad just The Simpsons/Bob’s Burgers/ Family Guy/ and nothing until Border Town premieres midseason. FOX may renew Dads for a second season and if so, instead of keeping it on Tuesdays they may see it as a natural fit for sundays being a Seth Macfarlane show. FOX could simply move it to 7:30 midseason. The point is if not Dads, what else will they air in that vacated 9:30 Sunday slot. Mindy Project, New Girl, and B99 make no sense to move there, if Dads is renewed than that’s its slot. Think War at Home in Fall 2006.

And as for Bones moving to Fridays they have to risk it. Almost Human premiering on Mondays makes sense because it has a chance airing on Mondays than Fridays. Moving Glee makes no sense because by December its done until March anyway where it will return after Rake finishes. I suspect that once Raising Hope and Enlisted finish their orders Glee could return Fridays at 8 so Rake can spend its entire 15 episode order on Thursdays.

FOX believes that Bones has enough of a stable audience where they could move it to fridays and the show’s audience will mostly follow it. No other FOX drama does. And I’m surprised Bones has never actually been moved to fridays after FOX has threatened to do so since 2007! That just shows how many flops FOX has had since Bones premiered in 2005. The X Factor moving doesnt make sense because its done by December and Ad time has already been spent for a Wed/Thurs. Bones is nearing the end of its life so a move to fridays is not surprising. The tenth season will be the last if Season 9 isnt.

I do agree about your theory with B99 and Mindy Project pairing well together both as workplace comedies. But does FOX consider Mindy project more of a workplace/ensemble comedy now or how the series started out as a romantic vehicle for Mindy Kahling? Its being defined more in current episodes as the former now. Its possible that if all 3 are renewed FOX could move B99 and Mindy to 8 and 8:30 have New Girl at 9 and air a new comedy post NG at 9:30, that could work.

Really happy to hear about Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

It was low on my list of shows to watch this season, but this week I decided to give it a shot via Hulu.

Sooo funny. I’m really glad I started watching it. Best new comedy of the season!

SB Slot=Renewal (usually). Good for Andy Sandberg and his stupidity ;)

Dads is gone…and While I know the “Mindy Project” is picking up a little steam, I still think ratings are too low to save that as well.

  • Paul

Great News for B99. As for Dads it should be a zombie face. that crap is walking dead.

  • chloe

mindy project is a crap comedy end of discussion

  • Oliver

The big question is what happens to the 3 hours of X Factor next season. It’s plausible that Fox has more schedule space for scripted shows next fall.

  • Ryan

Whoa. Losing credibility keeping Dads at certain cancellation. We get that you personally don’t like the show. Be objective with the numbers. That said, agree that B-9-9 is in good shape for renewal.

  • K L

Good to hear on B99. Thought the show started out slow, but it’s improved since. I just prefer this style of comedy over the laugh track ones. Can’t stand laugh tracks.

  • K L

Mindy project, I thought, started out well. But it has definitely fallen off. I think the script is still great, it’s just the direction of the show is way off. It’s as confusing as Mindy’s ever changing hair length and styles. :D

  • BoltBait

Glad to hear B99 is doing well. I think it is the funniest new comedy of the season.

  • groove365

Nice this is the only new show that I’ve stuck with this season, I hope it makes it.

  • Dan

@Oliver – If FOX slashes X Factor to 2 hours that either means a drama airing Wed at 9 or Thur at 8. That could keep Glee off Fridays but if Glee moves to Fridays at 8 and possibly Bones moves to Wednesdays that means Sleepy Hollow could be paired with a new drama.

Considering X Factor’s drop that’s extremely possible, I don’t think they will cancel it but a reduction is likely.

@Bill – With speculation of X Factor and a lot of midseason dramas and comedies, by March this year’s FOX index will be far more interesting than the cycle of Glee is certain to be renewed/Touch is certain to be cancelled/Cleveland Show is certain to be cancelled of last season.

Family Guy should be renewed within a few weeks. Other than that Bones and New Girl are the only other shows I could see early renewals for in March. Maybe Brooklyn Nine-Nine but all other series, FOX may wait until May on.

  • omabin

What’s with this insistence that FOX will walk away from Glee’s 6th season? The ratings have not dropped to any level that FOX couldn’t have expected last spring when they did the two season renewal. People are completely crazy.

  • Sarah

This is probably redundant on my part, but I’m never gonna understand why Fox is putting their 2nd highest non-animated scripted show on Friday when the shows on Tuesday-Thursday are doing worse. Sorry, I’m just not. Yes, it’s in its 9th season, but it’s still doing better than most everything else on the network.

  • Dan

@Omabin – People are very stupid and gullible when it comes to thinking that FOX will back out of a renewal due to a few low numbers. First of all Glee clearly has a storyline mapped out that will end in 2015. FOX wouldn’t cut it short. Plus there’s itunes sales, syndication, and several other factors helping Glee’s case. Even if I’m wrong about all that, FOX will still give it the sendoff it deserves.

If FOX renewed Fringe 2 more seasons longer then they should have and they dont even own the show, then they will keep with Glee’s renewal. Its coming back and I doubt FOX will regret renewing it. The show still does well enough where they can put up with another season of subpar numbers.

My guess for Glee next season is that it airs Fridays at 8 or moves to midseason maybe 18 episodes or something. We’ll see, a lot of it depends on if FOX reduces, cuts or cancels the X factor.

@Sarah – Its the curse of having limited timeslots. FOX wants to finally show the world that Bones can maintain its audience anywhere on the schedule, after threatening to do so since 2007. Also what other show can move to fridays? Not Glee because it only has a few more airings left before it goes on hiatus, not X factor because thats almost over to. not Any Tuesday comedies because FOX would rather hold their Tuesday comedy block together than make a lower rated Friday block. By January, Wed and Thur will look different completely with Idol and Rake airing Wed/Thur and FOX wants to keep consistent with the comedy block.

Plus if Almost Human flops, FOX could always switch it with Bones. AH has 6 airings from Nov 17-Dec 16. If it doesn’t perform very well then FOX could simply move Bones back to Mondays beginning January 13 and burn through the rest of AH’s order Fridays at 8. Its like the Rules of Engagement 2011 saturday issue. Veterans move to unconformable timeslots temporarily so new shows can be tested in better slots but if those new shows fail, they dont have to stay there. FOX put up with Mob Doctor for 3 months because they had no ready replacement. They dont wanna go through that again.

  • FowlScat

The rest of the shows on the network are crap, why not renew more crap. Want to see something actually funny? Check out the UK show Cuckoo with Sandburg. It actually solicits real laughter.

  • ChuckTesta

One last time: Raising Hope should be listed as “effectively cancelled”. Now that the ratings are going to start coming in you’ll no longer be able to ignore what I’ve been saying for months.

  • Anthony

How New Girl is still on tv is a complete mystery to me. It is horribly unfunny. Same with The Mindy Project. This is one project that needs to GO! New Girl already has a fan base so it’s not going anywhere, but hopefully FOX will 86 The Mindy Project soon. I’m looking forward to Almost Human which looks like it could be FOX’s next breakout drama. FOX hasn’t had a real successful drama since “24” so I hope it does well

I’m sorry to say, but the “canned” live audience laughter on Dad’s is more than I can stand. I’m still waiting to join them in their enjoyment of the show. Love the actors and I’m embarrassed for them watching a show that just goes for the cheap, expected punch line. As for Brooklyn 9-9 if it wasn’t for Andre Braugher (who I’ve enjoyed in many rolls) I probably wouldn’t watch it. Got to say it though, both shows have been deleted from my dvr weekly remind and record, about the only part worth watching is the last 5 mins of the both shows!
